Damn, I've actually been meaning to revisit West Side Story but the blu-ray is currently packed up. For now I'll vote to cut West Side Story and keep Virginia Woolf.

West Side Story: Cut
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf: Keep
I think Virginia Woolf is a fucking masterpiece and doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's right on par with Nichols' next film, The Graduate, in terms of being an absolute powerhouse of acting, directing, writing, and cinematography.

Was not expecting Woolf to get much love, but I'm glad it did. I remember first going into the film thinking it would be a standard fare melodrama from the '60s and was proven wrong almost instantly. Elizabeth Taylor is fucking incredible in that movie. Her and Burton's war of words and how they use the other characters to bounce their insults off is masterfully done. Everyone says the movie is depressing. I guess so, but it's also totally hilarious. Nichols began his career with two bonafide masterpieces. Not many directors can say that.

It’s many things but hilarious is not one of them. I disagree. I was laughing throughout it. Their insults are incredibly acute and belittling, and their constant one-upping of each other's nastiness is actually a lot of fun. There are some really sharp lines in that movie that Howard Hawks and Billy Wilder would be thrilled to have directed.

This pairing brought to you by John Huston and Bogey:
Director: John Huston Written by John Huston Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston Genre: Adventure, Drama, Western
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #30 on 1998's AFI Top 100
In this classic adventure film, two rough-and-tumble wanderers, Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) and Curtin (Tim Holt), meet up with a veteran prospector, Howard (Walter Huston), in Mexico and head into the Sierra Madre mountains to find gold. Although they discover treasure, they also find plenty of trouble, not only from ruthless bandits lurking in the dangerous Mexican wilderness but from their own insecurities and greed, which threaten to bring conflict at any moment.
Trivia: The movie's line "Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinking badges!" was voted as the #36 movie quote by the American Film Institute (out of 100).
Director: John Huston Written by James Agee , C.S. Forester Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn Genre: Adventure, Drama, Romance
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #17 on 1998's AFI Top 100
After religious spinster's (Katharine Hepburn) missionary brother is killed in WWI Africa, dissolute steamer captain (Humphrey Bogart) offers her safe passage. She's not satisfied so she persuades him to destroy a German gunboat. The two spend most of their time fighting with each other rather than the Germans. Time alone on the river leads to love.
Trivia: Sources claimed that everyone in the cast and crew got sick except Humphrey Bogart and John Huston, who said they avoided illness by essentially living on imported Scotch whiskey. Bogart later said, "All I ate was baked beans, canned asparagus and Scotch whiskey. Whenever a fly bit Huston or me, it dropped dead."
My Votes:
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre: Keep. This movie and that dark ending rule. The African Queen: Cut. I really have no strong feelings on it, but I don't think it belongs in a top 100.
