I'll nominate Alien, which kind of got lost in the shuffle last time but which I think is plainly an important jump in Hollywood production values and has some really iconic scenes.
I also didn't have the best luck with Stagecoach when I nominated it last, but I'll give it another shot, a really prototypical action film and a landmark of the western genre.
Then I think I'll nominate Badlands, let's get some Malick on the list.

So it might be a lost cause but I'm once again nominating The Manchurian Candidate. The film is both a fascinating time capsule of cold war paranoia and a hyper-relevant text about Russian meddling with American politics propelling a loud-mouthed and ignorant bigot to power. It also represents early 60s cinema at a cross between the golden age of classic Hollywood and the New Hollywood which would soon emerge. On the one hand, it is a narrative driven drama that adheres to the general rules of Hollywood filmmaking and is headlined by an old-school star in Frank Sinatra. On the other hand, it's also a far darker and more mature story, one which technically abides the Hays Code but doesn't really feel like it.
On a personal level, the movie is also really important to me. The Manchurian Candidate wasn't the first "old" movie I ever saw, but it was one of the first where the appeal went beyond a historical appreciation and was a movie I genuinely loved. It was thrilling and exciting and showed me something I'd never seen before. And as a thriller, it fucking owns. It's full of memorable scenes, great performances, and a haunting ending that's never left me. Let's place this fucker on the list!
As far as other nominees, let's go The Shining and...does Once Upon a Time in the West count as an American film or are we qualifying it as Italian?

As far as other nominees, let's go The Shining and...does Once Upon a Time in the West count as an American film or are we qualifying it as Italian? We already voted in The Shining. OUATITW is tricky. The AFI rules simply define "American-ness" as "Motion picture with significant creative and/or production elements from the United States." which I think was rather intentionally vague. OUATITW had the backing of Paramount, had a mostly American cast, and was partially filmed in Monument Valley so I'd say there was more of an argument for it than the man with no name movies. |

I'm sticking with The Truman Show, obviously.
I'll also stick with Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It was a very important/significant step forward in CG animation or just special effects for film in general. It's also one of Robert Zemeckis's best movies, and if Forrest Gump can't be on the list, then we need either this or Back To The Future on there to represent his 80's and early 90's work, which provided lots of pop culture fodder.
As for my 3rd nomination, it's down to either...
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Which, since Lord of the Rings is still on the list, then it's only fair to represent the other major fantasy franchise of the 2000's, and what better Harry Potter film to put on here than the most widely-praised among critics and audiences? An argument could probably be made for Sorcerer's Stone since it kickstarted the whole franchise in the first place, but it wasn't until Prisoner of Azkaban where the filmmakers behind the movies and critics really started to take them seriously. This one expertly walks the fine line between dark and light/playful and features some of John Williams' best work. But most importantly, consider this: if he hadn't directed Prisoner of Azkaban, would Alfonso Cuaron's career have taken off the way it ultimately did? Sure, he'd already done A Little Princess and Y Tu Mama Tambien, but Prisoner of Azkaban represents the beginning of a sort of domino effect where we ended up getting a major voice in recent cinema. If not for Azkaban, would we have gotten Children of Men? Or Gravity? Or Roma?
Or my other possible choice...
The American President - Okay, this'll likely be a tougher sell to most of you, but I legitimately think it's up there with the great romantic comedies of all-time. It's very much in the Frank Capra tradition -- the movie even references him at one point -- and features some really great dialogue and humor, and is pretty much the movie that launched the career of another major voice to what it is today: Aaron Sorkin. There's also lots of relevant stuff in here about the American public questioning the morals and public image and effectiveness of a sitting U.S. president.
I'll have to make a decision about that third slot.
