Going hiking tomorrow, poll still has 13 hrs or so for Wyldstaar to jump in, and I won't have a new set up until later tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night. Standings:Wall-E
| 7 | Fantasia
| 6 | Pinocchio
| 5 | Lion King
| 5 | Who Framed Roger Rabbit? | 4 |
Wall-E and Fantasia are now both in at 7 votes. I'll put up the next set in a little bit. Damn, really wanted a Disney Renaissance film on here.
Anyway...
Lawrence of Arabia: Keep
Spartacus: Cut

This pairing brought to you by randomization:
Director: Billy Wilder Written by Billy Wilder , I.A.L. Diamond Starring: Jack Lemmon, Shirley Maclaine, Fred MacMurray Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
#44 2012's Sight and Sound Directors' Poll, does not appear on Critics' #93 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Insurance worker C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lends his Upper West Side apartment to company bosses to use for extramarital affairs. When his manager Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) begins using Baxter's apartment in exchange for promoting him, Baxter is disappointed to learn that Sheldrake's mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the elevator girl at work whom Baxter is interested in himself. Soon Baxter must decide between the girl he loves and the advancement of his career.
Trivia: The film was lauded by Soviet-bloc critics as an indictment of the American system and a story that could only have happened in a capitalistic city like New York. At a dinner honoring him in East Berlin, Billy Wilder said the movie "could happen anywhere, in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Rome, Paris, London." When Wilder said the one place it could not have happened was Moscow, the East Germans broke into thunderous applause and cheers. When the ovation died down, Wilder continued: "The reason this picture could not have taken place in Moscow is that in Moscow nobody has his own apartment." The remark was met with grim silence. Owned.
Director: Alan J. Pakula Written by Alan J. Pakula , Based on the novel by William Styron Starring: Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Peter MAcNicol
Genre: Drama, Romance
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Poll Does not appear on the 1998 AFI list
Stingo (Peter MacNicol), a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie (Meryl Streep) and her lover Nathan (Kevin Kline), he learns that Sophie is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.
Trivia: Meryl Streep's performance as Sophie Zawistowska is ranked #3 on Premiere Magazine's 100 Greatest Performances of All Time.
My votes:
The Apartment: Keep. It's the second best Wilder on the list behind Double Indemnity. All the sleazebaggery is great and very amusing. Sophie's Choice: Cut. There are better Streep movies, hell even Peter MacNicol is better in Ghostbusters II than this. The movie feels like an amalgamation of pieces we've seen elsewhere, and not better than the sum of its parts.

Keep The Apartment
Cut Sophie's Choice (the flashbacks in it are good, but the parts of the movie set in the present are weak as hell)

The Apartment is amazing. Sophie's Choice is terrible. There's no "Sophie's choice" here: Apartment stays, Sophie goes.

This pairing brought to you by clammy men at first perturbed by free-spirited women, only to come alive under her influence:
Director: Howard Hawks
Written by Dudley Nichols, Hagar Wilde Starring: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant Genre: Screwball
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #97 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Harried paleontologist David Huxley (Cary Grant) has to make a good impression on society matron Mrs. Random (May Robson), who is considering donating one million dollars to his museum. On the day before his wedding, Huxley meets Mrs. Random's high-spirited young niece, Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn), a madcap adventuress who immediately falls for the straitlaced scientist. The ever-growing chaos -- including a missing dinosaur bone and a pet leopard -- threatens to swallow him whole.
Trivia: Throughout filming, RKO executives complained that the film was destined for commercial failure. They asked Howard Hawks to insert more romance and less slapstick and told him to take away Cary Grant's glasses, but he ignored them.
Director: Quentin Tarantino Written by Quentin Tarantino, Roger Avary Starring: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis Genre: Crime, Tarantino
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Poll #95 on the 1998 AFI list
Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multi-strand crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) ; his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) ; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) ; master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel) and a nervous pair of armed robbers, "Pumpkin" (Tim Roth) and "Honey Bunny" (Amanda Plummer).
Trivia: The largest chunk of the budget, $150,000, went to creating the Jack Rabbit Slim's set.
My votes:
Bringing Up Baby: Keep. I really like the performances here. While I think the list's idea of comedy is far too outdated for its own good, there's some good stuff here. Pulp Fiction: Keep. There's other Tarantino films I think should be on here, but I don't think i'd be able to galvanize support behind one movie. In that case, I wouldn't want to cut off the only representative. Also, we all the remember the slew of 90s movies that tried and mostly failed to emulate this.
We're going to have another vote-in round soon after this one. Depending on how this round goes, we may be able to nominate three apiece. Start thinking of your third movie.

There are plenty of screwball comedies I like better than Bringing Up Baby (including the newly added His Girl Friday). I'm inclined to cut it, though if Ian has some kind of impassioned argument for it I'd be willing to hear him out.
Keep Pulp Fiction for sure.

Yeah, normally I'd say cut Bringing Up Baby, but I know Ian loves it and I respect him too much to make that call. Keep.
And keep Pulp of course.
