Keep The Godfather
Drop LOTR
I've always found the entire LOTR trilogy to be highly over-rated.

This pairing brought to you by noir:
Director: Billy Wilder Written by Charles Bracket, Billy Wilder Starring: William Holden, Gloria Swanson Genre: Noir
#12 on 1998's AFI Top 100
An aging silent film queen refuses to accept that her stardom has ended. She hires a young screenwriter to help set up her movie comeback. The screenwriter believes he can manipulate her, but he soon finds out he is wrong. The screenwriters ambivalence about their relationship and her unwillingness to let go leads to a situation of violence, madness, and death.
Trivia: The character of Norma Desmond is modeled on the fate of several leading actresses of the silent era. Mary Pickford lived in seclusion, away from the public eye, while both Mae Murray and Clara Bow had well documented struggles with mental illness.
Director: Roman Polanski Written by Robert Towne Starring: Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway Genre: Neo-Noir
#23 on the 1998 AFI list
When Los Angeles private eye J.J. "Jake" Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband's activities, he believes it's a routine infidelity case. Jake's investigation soon becomes anything but routine when he meets the real Mrs. Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and realizes he was hired by an imposter. Mr. Mulwray's sudden death sets Gittes on a tangled trail of corruption, deceit and sinister family secrets as Evelyn's father (John Huston) becomes a suspect in the case.
Trivia: L.A.'s original Chinatown was demolished between 1933 and 1936 to make way for Union Station. The current Chinatown, located a few blocks away, opened in 1938. So the only time L.A. had no official Chinatown was 1937, the year in which this film is set.
My votes:
Sunset Boulevard: Keep
Chinatown: Keep

This pairing brought to you by fear of the ocean:
Director: Steven Spielberg Written by Peter Benchley, Carl Gottlieb based on the novel by Peter Benchley Starring: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss Genre: Monster, Adventure, Thriller
#48 on 1998's AFI Top 100
When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.
Trivia: Several decades after the release of Jaws (1975), Lee Fierro, who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich." She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot.
Director: James Cameron Written by James Cameron Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane Genre: Romance, Disaster
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Poll Does not appear on the 1998 AFI list
James Cameron's "Titanic" is an epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic; the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. She was the most luxurious liner of her era -- the "ship of dreams" -- which ultimately carried over 1,500 people to their death in the ice cold waters of the North Atlantic in the early hours of April 15, 1912.
Trivia: When James Cameron decided to include real footage of the Titanic's remains on the seabed, he did not want to simply shoot from inside a submersible as had been done for the IMAX documentary Titanica (1992). To allow filming from outside the sub, Cameron's brother Mike Cameron and Panavision developed a deep-sea camera system capable of withstanding the 400 atmospheres (5878.38 psi) of pressure at that depth.
My votes:
Jaws: Keep Titanic: Cut, but I could see Cameron being on the list for Terminator 2.

Jaws has gotta stay.
I think Titanic is a great movie, and am willing to argue that with anyone who wants. But it doesn't really feel like it belongs on this list.
