Spielberg advances to back to back Final Fours as Raiders of the Lost Ark continues to be one of the most dominant films of any of the tournaments thus far. Next battle up shortly.

Battle of the Decades
The Elite 8
1950's FinalsThe Freewheelin' Fifties
Team Coop and Dracula
The 1950's as described by Wikipedia: The 1950's was a decade of the Gregorian calendar that began on January 1, 1950, and ended on December 31, 1959. By its end, the world had largely recovered from World War II and the Cold War developed from its modest beginning in the late-1940's to a hot competition between the United States and the Soviet Union by the early-1960's. Clashes between communism and capitalism dominated the decade, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. The conflicts included the Korean War in the beginnings of the decade and the beginning of the Space Race with the launch of Sputnik 1. Along with increased testing of nuclear weapons (such as RDS-37 and Upshot–Knothole), this created a politically conservative climate. In the United States, the Second Red Scare caused Congressional hearings by both houses in Congress and anti-communism was the prevailing sentiment in the United States throughout the decade. The beginning of decolonization in Africa and Asia took place in this decade and accelerated in the following decade. Seven SamuraiSelected by: Cooper and Dracula Released: 1954 Directed By: Akira Kurosawa Who Directed: 9 Films in the 1950'sTomatoes/Meta: 100/98 Cinematography:Asakazu Nakai Score:Fumio Hayasaka Defeated: Sunset Blvd, Singin in the Rain, The Seventh Seal Siskel/Ebert:"The movie is long (207 minutes), with an intermission, and yet it moves quickly because the storytelling is so clear, there are so many sharply defined characters, and the action scenes have a thrilling sweep. Nobody could photograph men in action better than Kurosawa. One of his particular trademarks is the use of human tides, sweeping down from higher places to lower ones, and he loves to devise shots in which the camera follows the rush and flow of an action, instead of cutting it up into separate shots." - R. Ebert A Decade in Music:Thoughts from the Team:Seven Samurai is still the benchmark of action-adventure filmmaking and is more generally everything I want in a movie. It's exciting, it tells a great story full of colourful characters, and the seemingly simple premise of warriors protecting a village masks a far more complex portrait of class division and violent consequences. This is why we go to the movies. - PG Cooper Visual Enhancements:What Happened... in the 1950's:On September 12, 1953, Jacqueline Bouvier weds then-Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy in Newport, Rhode Island. Their reception at Hammersmith Farm would host more than 1,200 guests. Lets Talk Kurosawa:Versus
VertigoSelected by: Cooper and Dracula Released: 1958 Directed By: Alfred Hitchcock Who Directed: 11 Films in the 1950's Tomatoes/Meta: 94/100 Cinematography: Robert Burks Score: Bernard Herrmann Defeated: Rear Window, Godzilla, 12 Angry Men Siskel/Ebert:"Because of his hit T.V. show, he's usually tagged with the qualifier as 'Master of Suspense'. Well he was much more than that, and in no film is this more obvious than Vertgo from 1958, a study of obsessive fear and longing, with James Stewart playing a detective of fear and heights." - G. Siskel (Transcribed from audio clip) A Decade in Music:Thoughts from the Team:Vertigo is a movie that is deeply Hitchcockian while also being a little bit of an aberration in his filmography. It has his visual style and keep themes in full effect, but it's not necessarily made to be an audience pleasing movie filled with overt suspense, instead it's this rather haunting character piece about obsession and grief which really sticks with you after you watch it. - Dracula Visual Enhancements:What Happened... in the 1950's:Tenzing Norgay, a Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer, is the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. He was traveling with mountaineer and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. Lets Talk 'Cock:

I love Seven Samurai, but it's sad to see Mr. Cock's masterpiece (one of many) go down. At least it wasn't to Baby Driver. Nonetheless, Mr. Kurosawa's own masterpiece (one of many) will advance to the Final Four. 1 slot remains.
Next battle up shortly.

Battle of the Decades
The Elite 8
1960's Finals The Salacious Sixties
Team Dooms and Sno The 1960's as described by Wikipedia: The 1960's was a decade of the Gregorian calendar that began on 1 January 1960, and ended on 31 December 1969. The "cultural decade" of the 1960's is more loosely-defined than the actual decade, beginning around 1963–1964 with the John F. Kennedy assassination and the Beatles' arrival in the United States, and ending around 1969–1970 with the Altamont Free Concert, the Beatles' breakup, and the Kent State shootings. The term "the Sixties" is used by historians, journalists, and other academics in scholarship and popular culture to denote the complex of inter-related cultural and political trends around the globe during this era. Some use the term to describe the decade's counterculture and revolution in social norms about clothing, music, drugs, dress, sexuality, formalities, and schooling; others use it to denounce the decade as one of irresponsible excess, flamboyance, and decay of social order. The decade was also labeled the Swinging Sixties because of the fall or relaxation of social taboos that occurred during this time, but also because of the emergence of a wide range of music; from a folk music revival, to the Beatles revolution, to the introspective lyrics of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Norms of all kinds were broken down, especially in regards to civil rights and precepts of military duty. Lawrence of ArabiaSelected by: Dooms and Snoborder Released: 1962 Directed By: David Lean Who Directed: 2 Films in the 1960'sTomatoes/Meta: 98/100 Cinematography:F.A. Young Score: Maurice Jarre Defeated: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Graduate, Psycho Siskel/Ebert:"To see it in a movie theater is to appreciate the subtlety of F.A. (Freddie) Young's desert cinematography--achieved despite blinding heat, and the blowing sand, which worked its way into every camera. “Lawrence of Arabia” was one of the last films to actually be photographed in 70mm (as opposed to being blown up to 70 from a 35mm negative). There was a hunger within filmmakers like Lean (and Kubrick, Coppola, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa and Stone) to break through the boundaries, to dare a big idea and have the effrontery to impose it on timid studio executives. The word “epic” in recent years has become synonymous with “big budget B picture.” What you realize watching “Lawrence of Arabia” is that the word “epic” refers not to the cost or the elaborate production, but to the size of the ideas and vision." - R. Ebert A Decade in Music:Thoughts from the Team:Has there been another movie whose every element and every detail has been a masterstroke? From the acting to the script to the cinematography to the score, almost everything about Lawrence of Arabia is dead-on perfection. We'll never see another film like it. - Doomsday Visual Enhancements:What Happened... in the 1960's: Marilyn Monroe made one of her last public appearances on May 19th at a birthday celebration for U.S. President John F. Kennedy before her death. The event became an iconic moment in pop culture when the actress sang an intimate, sultry, and memorable rendition of "Happy Birthday" to the world leader. Monroe wore an intricately designed skin-tight beaded dress that was considered a little scandalous at the time. Lets Talk Lean:Versus
The Good, The Bad and The UglySelected by: Dooms and Snoborder Released: 1966 Directed By: Sergio Leone Who Directed: 5 Films in the 1960's
Tomatoes/Meta: 97/90 Cinematography: Tonino Delli Colli Score: Ennio Morricone Defeated: The Manchurian Candidate, Bonnie and Clyde, 2001: A Space Odyssey (By way of tiebreaker) Siskel/Ebert:Leone tells the story more with pictures than words. Examine the masterful scene in the cemetery. A fortune in gold is said to be buried in one of the graves, and three men have assembled, all hoping to get it. The actors are Clint Eastwood (the Good), Lee Van Cleef (the Bad), and Eli Wallach (the Ugly). Each man points a pistol at the other. If one shoots, they all shoot, and all die. Unless two decide to shoot the third man before he can shoot either one of them. But which two, and which third? - R. Ebert A Decade in Music: Thoughts from the Team:What does it say when a group of Italian filmmakers make a movie that's considered one of the best in the most 'American' of genres? It doesn't really matter because The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is certainly the top tier of western films and aside from giving us one of the most iconic scores in cinema history it delivers one of the greatest, most satisfying third acts ever put to film. - Doomsday Visual Enhancements: What Happened... in the 1960's:On September 2, 1962, Rod Laver becomes the third tennis player to earn the "Calendar Grand Slam" by winning all four prestigious major tournaments in the same year. Lets Talk Leone:My Vote: Lawrence of Arabia
