Battle of the Decades
The Sweet 16
The Salacious Sixties
Team Dooms and Sno The 1960's as described by Wikipedia: The 1960's was a decade of the Gregorian calendar that began on 1 January 1960, and ended on 31 December 1969. The "cultural decade" of the 1960's is more loosely-defined than the actual decade, beginning around 1963–1964 with the John F. Kennedy assassination and the Beatles' arrival in the United States, and ending around 1969–1970 with the Altamont Free Concert, the Beatles' breakup, and the Kent State shootings. The term "the Sixties" is used by historians, journalists, and other academics in scholarship and popular culture to denote the complex of inter-related cultural and political trends around the globe during this era. Some use the term to describe the decade's counterculture and revolution in social norms about clothing, music, drugs, dress, sexuality, formalities, and schooling; others use it to denounce the decade as one of irresponsible excess, flamboyance, and decay of social order. The decade was also labeled the Swinging Sixties because of the fall or relaxation of social taboos that occurred during this time, but also because of the emergence of a wide range of music; from a folk music revival, to the Beatles revolution, to the introspective lyrics of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Norms of all kinds were broken down, especially in regards to civil rights and precepts of military duty. The Good, The Bad and The UglySelected by: Dooms and Snoborder Released: 1966 Directed By: Sergio Leone Who Directed: 5 Films in the 1960's A Decade in Music: Thoughts from the Team: What does it say when a group of Italian filmmakers make a movie that's considered one of the best in the most 'American' of genres? It doesn't really matter because The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is certainly the top tier of western films and aside from giving us one of the most iconic scores in cinema history it delivers one of the greatest, most satisfying third acts ever put to film. - Doomsday Visual Enhancements:What Happened... in the 1960's:On September 2, 1962, Rod Laver becomes the third tennis player to earn the "Calendar Grand Slam" by winning all four prestigious major tournaments in the same year. Versus
2001: A Space OdysseySelected by: Dooms and Snoborder Released: 1968 Directed By: Stanley Kubrick Who Directed: 4 Films in the 1960'sA Decade in Music: Thoughts from the Team:It's almost intimidating when you think of filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick who tackles an entirely new genre with each new film and knocks it out of the park every time. Some people might say that 2001 stands apart in the post-Star Wars era but it doesn't stand apart as much as it stands on its own as a pure science fiction film that's still blowing minds today, mine included. - Doomsday Visual Enhancements: What Happened... in the 1960's:On October 1, 1962, Groucho Marx introduces the new host of The Tonight Show: Johnny Carson. His first guests are Joan Crawford, Rudy Vallee and The Phoenix Singers.
My Vote: 2001: A Space Odyssey

If a tie isn't broken by tomorrow I'll defer to Sno. My personal preference is The Good, The Bad and The Ugly but that's merely because I enjoy the movie more, I fully acknowledge that 2001 is an important film for many reasons. If Sno really feels strongly that 2001 deserves the W we can go with that. If he doesn't care either way though then I'm all for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly winning.

We’ll let Donny set the time limit. When we reach zero hour if Sno hasn’t re-emerged and we’re tied up I’ll throw in the deciding vote. Although I know Jibbs will vote for Eastwood, he hates 2001.

One thing I know that when it comes to running these tournaments, is that in the event of a tie, it can be hard to break a tie, which is where we currently stand, deadlocked at 5 votes a piece. I don't know, maybe people are scared to be the deciding factor, but regardless of what the reason is, a decision has to be made.
I also know that, while I love both of these movies, and I really do, I love 2001: A Space Odyssey more, by the slimmest of margins. To me, the fact that we entered this tournament with 2 Kubrick, and neither advance to the Quarter-Finals is incomprehensible. But that's how these things go in tournaments. Movies you love, or think will make a deep run, sometimes get knocked off (See: Goodfellas, Avengement, John Wick 2), and that's what can make these events compelling.
I also also know that this is a tournament where I relied on 4 CS! members to help curate the list of films to enter the gauntlet, and they obliged, and I appreciate that. And in the events of a tie, I like to defer to those users, because again, these are the participants they selected, and it's only fair to give them final say. This, however, is a slightly different situation because our team in question, Dooms and Sno, chose differently this time around.
As much as I love 2001, I realize it's not necessarily about me, and it's clear to me that Dooms is a big supporter of TGTBATU, and rightfully so, it's a fantastic piece of cinema. He was also kind enough to swap his vote earlier in the tournament with Raging Bull, to help move the process along. True team player.
All of this is a long winded way of saying that my decision is in and TGTBATU will advance to the Elite 8 in dramatic fashion. We now move on to the next battle.

Battle of the Decades
The Sweet 16
The Naughty Nineties
Team Coop and Dracula
The 1990's as described by Wikipedia: The 1990s was a decade of the Gregorian calendar that began on January 1, 1990, and ended on December 31, 1999. Culturally, the 1990s are characterized by the rise of multiculturalism and alternative media, which continued into the 2000s and 2010s. Movements such as grunge, the rave scene and hip hop spread around the world to young people during that decade, aided by then-new technology such as cable television and the World Wide Web. A combination of factors, including the continued mass mobilization of capital markets through neo-liberalism, the thawing and end of the decades-long Cold War, the beginning of the widespread proliferation of new media such as the Internet from the middle of the decade onwards, increasing skepticism towards government, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union led to a realignment and reconsolidation of economic and political power across the world and within countries. The dot-com bubble of 1997–2000 brought wealth to some entrepreneurs before its crash between 2000 and 2001. The 1990s saw extreme advances in technology, with the World Wide Web, the first gene therapy trial, and the first designer babies all emerging in 1990 and being improved and built upon throughout the decade. UnforgivenSelected by: Cooper and DraculaReleased: 1992Directed By: Clint EastwoodWho Directed: 9 Films in the 1990'sA Decade in Music:
Thoughts from the Team:Beyond any meta-critique of Eastwood's own star persona and history with Westerns, Unforgiven is just an awesome story told masterfully by Eastwood. Old Hollywood moviemaking at its best. I first saw Unforgiven right around the time I saw Leone's Dollars trilogy and other Westerns like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and the collective impact of all those films made quite the mark on my teenage ass. - PG Cooper Visual Enhancements: What Happened... in the 1990's:Launching in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google was originally the search engine for Stanford’s website (with the domain google.stanford.edu). This now mega company was started in the founders’ friend Susan Wojcicki’s garage in Menlo Park, California. Versus
Pulp FictionSelected by: Cooper and Dracula Released: 1994 Directed By: Quentin Tarantino Who Directed: 3 Films in the 1990's
A Decade in Music:
Thoughts from the Team: Does this really require an explanation? One of the definitive movies of the 90s and one of the cleverest screenplays ever written. Tarantino weaves these disparate stories together expertly and in a way that's almost effortless (there's a reason you rarely hear anyone say they don't "get" the movie despite its chronological shenanigans). Beyond that Tarantino simply directs the movie with a ton of energy and confidence and creates a movie which is truly a blast chalk full of iconic scenes. - DraculaVisual Enhancements:
What Happened... in the 1990's:
In 1992, McDonald’s released their famous super size fries and drink. The upside option stayed on the menu until 2004, as the fast-food chain strived for healthier food choices.
My Vote: Pulp Fiction
