I came REALLY close to predicting Jojo Rabbit for Best Picture How come? I have suspected that would be a strong contender since I saw it at a local festival with a packed crowd and was surprised by how into it the audience was (I was, like, the one person in the theater not laughing). Beyond that I saw a lot of parallels between it and Green Book. Both won the Audience Award at TIFF, both adress issues of tolerance in ways I find sappy, and both go unexpected Best Editing Awards and non-action movies that get editing nominations have long been seen as a bellwether for BP wins. Beyond that it's gotten a lot of low level guild love. It won the WGA, it won the ACE award for comedy, and it did well with the casting and costumes guild and Waititi got in at DGA. However, unlike Green Book it's kind of under-performed at the box office. It's only made $30 million (which is less than even Parasite) whereas Green Book made something like $85 million, which suggests to me that it doesn't resonate as strongly with basic people as Green Book did. Beyond that I've just been hearing mixed things from "normies" in a way I didn't with Green Book, which seemed to have more of a stark split between audiences and critics than this does.

Well, nothing would make me happier than to see it somehow win it tonight, but even being the champion of that film that I am, I don't think it has a chance.

I have suspected that would be a strong contender Wait. You were serious? Very. Will be kicking myself for swapping last minute if it fails. Another part of it is that a lot of tech-heavy "Goliaths" like The Revenant, Gravity, Dunkirk, and to some extent La La Land have sort of failed at the finish line and 1917 reminds me a lot of them so I've been resistant to predicting it and I just don't have faith in the Academy to come through for something as cool as Parasite.

Even by that logic, I'd still expect something like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood over Jojo Rabbit. Does Jojo even have any momentum win-wise going into tonight?

Jojo is reportedly a darling among Academy voters. Don't count it out.

I dismissed OUATIH as a contender the second it failed to get the Best Editing nomination. 1917 has an excuse for missing there obviously, but it should have been an easy get for OUATIH and it failed. QT might still win screenplay and the L.A. connection could get it the art direction award but I'm guessing that the Brad Pitt Oscar will be the extent to what the Academy thinks they "owe" the movie.

Did the academy consider that Parasite was not the best picture?

Did the academy consider that Parasite was not the best picture? As Dracula likes to point out, as with Moonlight, it benefited from the preferential voting. 1917 and Once Upon a Time cancelled each other out. The real shocker was Parasite winning Best Director.
