Doomsday recommended The Sweet Smell of Success for someone and I thought he meant this classic. God only knows how many times that was played on Comedy Central back in the day. Also, one more week for this current round.

The Florida Project (2017)
If you told me back in 2010 or so when I'd stopped listening to Opie and Anthony that I'd one day see Sandy Kane's old floppy tits on the big screen I would've called you a liar. Yet, here we are.
The Florida Project centers on a imaginative if not effervescently troublesome 6 year old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), living in poverty in a garishly purple stucco motel on Highway 192 in the shadow of Walt Disney World. Often left to her own devices, Moonee and her friends entertain themselves with mischief. The film opens with them splitting on cars at a neighboring motel, and an early amusing interaction between her mother Halley (Bria Vinaite) and the motel manager Bobby (Williem Dafoe) make it clear that Bobby has frequently had to clean up after Moonee's mess and Halley's inability to show any sense of discipline.
Director Sean Baker never revels in poverty porn, in fact most of the movie is through Moonee's eyes. Baker trains his camera at Prince's level often, and in wide shots makes it clear that this motel and the road are Moonee's playground; one minute-long shot follows Moonee and her friends as they run from one end of the motel horseshoe to the other, down the stairs and to the next door motel.
The great side effect of this focus is to make the aspects of Halley and Bobby stand out even more. Halley cannot find work--she tells her TANF advisor she was fired from a strip club for refusing to have sex with clients--but given her early lackadaisical parenting approach and use of Moonee as a prop in a perfume hawking scam at rich resorts, you are made to hate her early on. Halley drinks, smokes, yells "Worldstar" at fights in the parking lot, and doesn't make any effort to supervise her kid or that of her best friend's under her charge. But she clearly loves her daughter, and makes an effort to give her happiness - catching rides to gawk at Disney World's fireworks nearby, or a much more crucial scene towards the end that I won't spoil here. For a first time actress, Vinaite gives a hell of a lot of emotions out of the viewer.
Dafoe deserved his Oscar nomination for the trickier role playing a manager who is responsible for the property that exploits his tenants, while also filling out some sort of fatherly role to them. He looks the other way on illegal behavior when he can, pays out of pocket for his charges, and only pulls in evictions when the law or his owner have forced his hand. Bobby is affable but stern, and you understand from pieces of his backstory but if not in exactly in poverty, he's found himself stuck to this run-down joint.
What strikes me about the film is how realistic it seems. I've known people like Halley and her friend. Halley not really attempting to better herself or provide parenting; her friend trying her damndest to work for providing as much for her kid as possible. Hell, even a wild scene where Bobby confronts a visitor outside the motel is made believable by how long the sequence stretches out. All of this makes the inevitable bittersweet ending hit harder, the one aspect of the film that is clear-as-day unrealistic.
For full disclosure, my brother-in-law has family in the Orlando/Kissimmee area, and when we've rented out a VRBO for week-long vacations the past two years, I've gotten a lot exposure to the the slum strip depicted in this film. I'd personally kill for some Fatboys BBQ on the Kissimmee end right now or for some Checkers by Oldtown, but all this is to say the bright cheery facade hiding the lives on or below the poverty line was not a shock to me.
I give this an A, and would have put it in my top 10 of the decade had I saw it before Dracula's all-decade list.

Eat My DustThe version of this movie on tubi looks to be a VHS rip and is in the wrong aspect ratio. Normally, I wouldn't bother, but a promise is a promise. Eat My Dust is a cheap Roger Corman chase movie that would be entirely forgotten had it not starred future major Hollywood icon Clint Howard and his older brother Ronald. The film has almost no story or characters and relies entirely on its chase sequences. These scenes are alright, but not quite as impressive as we need to be. By 1976 we had Bullit, The French Connection, Vanishing Point, and Live and Let Die which all put this to shame, not only having better vehicle stunts but also more interesting movies surrounding said stunts. A year later we'd also see Smokey and the Bandit which execute on the rural chase movie to much greater effect. Hell, even in the realm of Roger Corman movies, there's always Death Race 2000. I'm not sure if the stunts in that movie are actually better, but it's definitely a more fun movie. There's enough car mayhem to make Eat My Dust at least semi-watchable, but it's fundamentally a boring movie that reflects how much of a rush job the production was. DOverall, based on Willow and Eat My Dust, I have two takeaways. That Ron Howard sucks and that Neverending definitely had the better part of this deal.

Of fucking course I have Pluto. They have all-day MST and Rifftrax channels. I'm still bowing out for the time being. I'm working on some personal stuff at the moment. When I feel I'm in a better mental place I'll jump back in.

Solely because on skink's review of Florida Project I decided to watch it. Wow, great flick! That ending with the two girls looking at each other in the doorway, oh god I'm getting choked up just thinking about it.
