I watched Cold War tonight.
There's something magnetic about the main leads, though it's definitely statutory rape at the beginning. So much communicated with just their faces.
Adding the lighting techniques, the cinematography really allows the film to float on without ever feeling a slog. I can see why he won Best Director at Cannes, though I wonder if basing the movie loosely on his parents is supposed to give us hope the ending wasnt as clear as it was.

Birds of Passage
Set in Columbia during the 60’s/70’s, Birds of Passage is an epic crime story about the indigenous Wayuu people, and of one among them who rises in prestige and power, through drug trafficking, in order to woo the daughter of a tribe’s matriarch, and eventually support her and her family, while both trying to gain favor with her tribe, and at the same time, uphold his peoples’ traditions and culture. The film, directed by Cira Guerra and Cristina Gallego, is beautifully shot and has some amazing cinematography. Scenes are carried out with an almost dreamlike quality, such as Zaida’s coming out ceremony, where Rapayet first woos her, setting the tone of the film. It’s easy to find parallels to such films as Scarface, Goodfellas, or even the Godfather, but what makes this tragedy so much more heartbreaking is seeing the Wayuu, a people pure with tradition, succumb to, and eventually fall apart, under the same weight of corruption, even while still holding on to a sense of innocence, that's inevitable under such rapid rises of power, but always fascinating to watch.
8.5/10

Something Wild
Sometimes I wonder how movies go from idea to greenlight to wrap. I suppose you could say that about any movie really but it's movies like Something Wild that make me wonder even from the initial outline what the filmmakers were trying to say and who they were trying to talk to. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just interesting to think about given the concept of the movie; an uptight businessman meets an offbeat woman and together hijinx ensue. It's not the most original idea but those other fish out of water films usually have more of a storyline connecting events. Something Wild feels more focused on the chemistry between its characters than on any noticeable plot and since it's done well it works even when it feels like it shouldn't.
Jeff Daniels plays Charlie, a stuffy New York businessman who runs into Melanie Griffith's Lulu, an eager free spirit who whisks Charlie into her car and out of the state. Charlie throws caution to the wind and the two pretend to be married, drink, bang and go to Lulu's high school reunion. Tough times are ahead though as Lulu's ex-husband (Ray Liotta) makes an appearance and wants her back. Charlie eventually is forced to admit to himself that his feelings for Lulu are genuine and uses his newfound pride and determination to steal her back from Ray's abusive clutches.
Something Wild reminded me a lot of Scorsese's After Hours in that they're both darkly comic but the humor isn't necessarily found in jokes, it's more about the situations the characters find themselves in and we watch as they work through them. There's not a lot of witty banter or off the cuff remarks, it's watching how awkward things can get for poor Charlie. It's about halfway into the film where the darkly comic just gets dark and things go from awkwardly amusing to tragic. It's not necessarily out of place, it felt like a pretty natural shift, it just made me wonder how this movie was pitched. There's not much of a plot, there's not a lot of backstory to the characters and it's not really laugh out loud funny so on paper it doesn't seem like much to write home about. You could almost argue though that the eccentric setup and nonsensical decision making is what makes it endearing. Right off the bat we see Charlie taking a ride from a stranger who should otherwise have little to no interest in him, they jump into bed despite the fact that he lets on that he's married with a family and before you know it they're playing couple to Lulu's hometown. Once all the pieces are in place though it's a perfectly entertaining if not sometimes outlandish movie that's a good way to help pass an afternoon.
I won't go so far as to say that I loved Something Wild, it's a fun watch that I don't think I'll revisiting in the immediate future but at no point did I ever find it dull or unappealing. Jonathan Demme's filmography over the years is pretty spotty with some big hits and very wide misses but Something Wild I think sits on the 'hit' side of the fence, offering good acting and offbeat humor to a sometimes charming if predictable effect.

B so says Doomsday Glad you liked it. For my part, I loved the first half and then shifted to really like when Ray Liotta showed up. Liotta himself was great but I like the loose, plotless quality of the first half so much more.

Death to Smoochy (2002) I mostly knew Death to Smoochy for two things: 1. Roger Ebert absolutely hated it and famously said “in a world of terrible movies Death to Smoochy is a towering achievement” and 2. Jon Stewart was in the movie and would frequently bring it up on The Daily Show for self-deprecating reasons. The movie is one of those big infamous flops and I’d say that it both is and isn’t worthy of its terrible reputation. It’s worthy of it because it most definitely does not work and is generally a complete mess but it’s unworthy of it because, well, everything that fails about it speaks to the kind of ambition that would have otherwise worked out better. The film essentially re-envisions the world of children’s entertainment as a cutthroat industry filled with mean capitalists who are hot messes in their personal life and who are out to make a buck off of stupid kids. That’s a kind of cynicism that should speak to me given how I feel about movies for the youngins’, but here it just kind of feels a little… late. The whole movie was clearly inspired by the 1991 arrest of Paul Reubens for jacking off in a porno theater and the 1992 introduction of the Barney character into the lives of children and their long suffering parents, but both of these things were a decade out of date by the time the movie came out and the whole movie’s general aesthetic of Frank Capra revivalism had already been done much better by the Coen Brothers’ 1994 film The Hudsucker Proxy. I have a hunch that this was a script that sat in development hell for a long time before someone finally convinced a studio to finance it and a bunch of famous actors were brought on to make that happen, but they probably should have just cut their losses. The movie isn’t very funny and it’s messages about the entertainment industry either seem tritely obvious or just kind of nonsensical. Still, you’ve got to admit that the movie is made with gusto by people who do think they’re making some really biting shit so it’s hard to stay too mad at the film. Oh, and yeah, Jon Stewart is indeed very bad here and was probably right to give up on the acting side of his career. ** out of Five

I've always thought the movie was underappreciated, and specifically hated Stewart for shitting on it. DeVito clearly has some Always Sunny energy behind the camera, Robin William's is just the right amount of twisted, and Norton is a perfect straight guy.
I was hoping to convert another apologist.
Oh well, been working on my recommend list for the next one
