I am. If I ever pulled Dracula, trust me, I'd make it hurt. Shit, Dracula hasn’t watched the John Cena firefighter movie yet. Golden Stake Awards wont be complete without it.

Sweet I'll try Hudsucker.
I'm really torn between Life in a Day and Your Name, but going with Your Name.

Blockers? The winner of the 2018 Golden Stake Award for most underappreciated film?

Train to BusanLike most people these days, I'm just kind of over the whole zombie fad -- though, actually, I'm not sure I was ever really that into it. Sure, you've got your staples like George Romero and other gems like Shaun of the Dead and Anna and the Apocalypse that have reinvigorated the trope/genre however briefly, but mostly, there only seems to be so much you can do with zombies other than run from them or kill them. But to its credit, the 2016 Korean thriller Train to Busan found a bit of that more creative vigor by way of setting most of its action on a moving train. That right there immediately gives this movie a more interesting hook than a typical zombie film, as it creates some good opportunity for more interesting challenges and ways of combating the undead, which it largely takes advantage of. True, the movie sometimes cheats by finding ways of having the characters temporarily disembark at a train station and whatnot, but that doesn't mean the film ever loses any of its intensity. Right from the moment where we see the first victim turn, the suspense and thrills are kept up pretty consistently. I particularly enjoyed the middle section here, which without getting into any spoilers, presents a situation that makes the best use of the train setting and finds genuinely suspenseful moments to mine from it. The film may not do anything new in regards to the zombies themselves, but it does do a good job taking advantage of its confined setting. It also gets us to care about the central characters. The story largely follows a father and daughter as they take the train to meet up with the daughter's mom. Again, nothing we haven't seen before in terms of characterization because the father is the typical overworked, too-busy-to-notice-his-daughter archetype, but we do feel the connection between them as the story goes on and the movie also has a handful of likable supporting players surrounding them. So by the time we get to the end, there are definitely losses felt that aren't just obligatory. Train to Busan is a pretty worthy watch, all told. You get your money's worth with the premise and the movie does a surprisingly good job of giving its characters charm and weight. I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it great or anything, but it's solid and quite involving.

Firecracker...fucking NeverendingFirecracker is mostly what I expected; a shitty B-movie with dull characters, actors lacking in charisma, a barebones story, and unimaginative filmmaking. It really is hilarious how few set-ups went into every scene except the sex scene, which I guess is where the director really found his inspiration. I felt pretty gross once I finished jerking off. Two things save Firecracker. First, the fight choreography here is actually pretty good. The lazy filmmaking actually works pretty well here, as the pulled back medium shots allow us to simply enjoy the fighting. Second, the editing. At 1 hour and 17 minutes, Firecracker is relentlessly efficient, blasting through the story at a breakneck pace and getting to the goods quickly. Overall, Firecracker is pretty bad, but it's the kind of bad movie that's at least entertaining. I think it'd do well on Best of the Worst. D+

The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) I really want to have stronger feelings about this film but for me it was just kind of the personification of an average indie movie. The film is a Southern picaresque in the vein of Mud or Undertow in which a guy with Down syndrome escapes from the institution he’s living in and connects with a drifter played by Shia LaBeouf while a nurse played by Dakota Johnson also pursues them. I would say that the film’s cast is pretty good; LaBeouf is in good form and it’s cool that they found an actual Down syndrome person to play that role. That said I found a lot of the characters here to be pretty broadly drawn. The staff at the home the Down syndrome guys was living in felt more like the kind of staff he would have had to deal with in a different era than what a modern disability home would be like and the LaBeouf character’s effortless homespun wisdom did not ring particularly true to me and the way they drag the nurse into the adventure leading to a romance between her and the LaBeouf character felt contrived in a very clichéd movie way. Beyond that the whole movie kind of seemed to get its point (that people with mental disabilities should be treated more like regular people) across really quickly and doesn’t really have much else to do from there and it reaches its finale in a way that didn’t strike me as overly satisfying.
