The Bad Sleep Well
The first scene of Akira Kurosawa's The Bad Sleep Well is a high-profile, almost celebrity style wedding. It's a large and luxurious affair that profiles the major players of the film. As toasts are made a crowd of reporters in a nearby room reveal how the groom works for the bride's father, a vice president for a company knee-deep in corruption and scandal. We also find out one of the executives had committed suicide years before and that someone is secretly attempting to expose the truth of their crooked schemes. That someone is the groom himself, a man who has secured a position of importance in the company and family who holds a personal vendetta against all those involved. It's a study of loyalty, corporatism and revenge and for a 55 year old film many of its themes remain especially relevant today.
Toshiro Mifune is certainly near the top of my list of favorite actors. Kurosawa was initially drawn to his ferocious energy and that is expertly unleashed and when necessary contained in his performance here. Kurosawa's direction also moves at an even, exciting speed. At 150 minutes it's a movie that demands balance while remaining compelling. In several ways it reminds me of High and Low but the mood remains the same. Like High and Low, the somber ending is also something that Kurosawa knows how to nail.
I enjoy the movies of Akira Kurosawa as much as anyone. Admittedly I haven't seen all of them and I know like any great filmmaker he has a few in there that aren't exactly up to par with the others. This isn't one of those films, rather it's one that stands by itself while profiling corruption and how people can be stripped of humanity in the face of money and authority.

Guess I gotta jump on The Keep.

When you review The Keep I'll throw up a new round.
Who's all in for the next one? It would be nice if we could get more than 4 or 5 people...

Got caught up moving stuff out of my student apartment and by the time I got home I had kinda forgotten about the club. I'll get my film watched soon (at least by Monday). I'll be in for next round.

"This was directed by Michael Mann?" is a thought I had repeatedly while watching The Keep. The film, which revoles around some Nazi soldiers who stumble across a "keep" containing a powerful demon which begins killing them, is terrible. Mann's original cut of the film was apparently well over three hours so the studio took it away and cut it down to an hour and 40 minutes. That explains the unorganized plot, bizarre pacing, and general lapses in logic, but even with that aside this is still a really awful movie. Mann's decisions are just baffling. From the random use of slow motion, to the dull cinematography, poor visual effects, boring performances, and disorienting staging, I can't help but wonder what the dude was thinking. I know this was early in his career, but he had already made the compelling ad very sharp Thief so I'm really not sure what happened. Of course, it doesn't help that the story is adapting seems like a total waste. I mean, Nazis fighting an evil demon? That sounds like the type of horrible schlock you see Red Letter Media ripping into on "Best of the Worst", not something made by Michael fucking Mann.
This is an all around awful movie and I'm struggling to find anything remotely positive to say. I suppose the Tangerine Dream score sounded cool, but it also didn't match the period setting of the film at all and further took me out of the movie. Fuck it, The Keep sucks.

Ya know Coop, you knew it was a crappy movie going in, I knew it was a crappy movie when I recommended it but at the end of the day you were able to scratch a film off the Michael Mann list. It's made you a more well-rounded film buff and it's something that we both can joke about both here and on Facebook from now on,

Given my lateness last round, I thought I'd post two reviews this one.
The Hudsucker Proxy
The Hudsucker Proxy is a comedy from the Coen Brothers set in the 1950s about Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins), a simple man from Indiana who is made President of the Hudsucker company. Nnorville has all sorts of ambitions but what he doesn't know is he's only being made president so stock will plummet and the board of directors can buy their shares back for next to nothing. Jennifer Jason Leigh also stars as a fast-talking, tough as nails reporter who goes undercover to investigate Barnes.
The film is basically a cross between the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s and the Frank Capra pictures of the same era where an idealistic and simple man fights to preserve his values in the face of indifference and compromise. I don't think the film really works as either though. The Capra-esque plot is undercut by the film's deep sense of cynicism. The immaculate and stylish sets dwarf everything else and the characters and plots feel insincere. The movie is lacking in heart, as they say; an element essential for a Frank Capra style story. The screwball comedy holds up a bit better thanks to some fun dialogue and Jennifer Jason Leigh's flawless emulation of characters played by people like Rosalind Russell and Katharine Hepburn, but the film is liking a certain anarchic tone. The film also just isn't that funny. It certainly has its moments, like the montage when Norville is made president and some of the dialogue, but I rarely actually laughed.
In spite of my criticisms, I really do admire the hell out of this movie. The art direction is phenomenal and reminded be a lot of the excellent work on Tim Burton's Batman films. The cast is also quite fun, particularly the aforementioned Jennifer Jason Leigh who totally owns her part. It's a film where I can see the talents of the Coens coming through even though I don't think it really works. It's a tough film to call and I might need to revisit this (Coen comedies often play better a second time) but for now we'll call my reaction mixed.
C
Cast Away
It's kind of surprising I hadn't actually seen Cast Away until now. It's had a pretty clear pop-cultural impact and beyond that it's the kind of drama I could see myself being interested in as a kid. In any event, I've finally seen the film and I'd say it averages to being decent. I say this because there's a lot of stuff here I really like, and a lot of stuff I don't. Starting with the good, I think the entire stretch on the island is great. I love seeing Chuck's processes as he tries to survive and I think his descent to a more primal/crazed state is handled really well. I particularly like the film's courage to go long stretches without dialogue and when Chuck does break down and start talking to himself it felt real. It also pretty much goes without saying, but Tom Hanks is great here and the big plane crash set-piece is pretty thrilling.
What doesn't work about the film are the bits which surround the action on the island. The opening few minutes which introduce Chuck and his girlfriend aren't really bad, but I don't think they're all that important either. What bits we learn about his character in these scenes don't really inform how we view his experiences in isolation. However the real kicker is the film's third act where Chuck returns home after four years. This whole section plays as tripe Hollywood bullshit and a totally insincere portrait of how someone would psychologically react to normalcy and civilization after four years of primal living. Scenes like Chuck's tearful embrace with his former lover (now married to another man) in the rain are really clichéd. The section itself just sort of rambles on before coming to a simple ending which is meant to be poignant, but by then the film has run out of steam.
For a while there, I thought Cast Away would prove to be Robert Zemeckis' best film, but man did that third act bring things crashing down. I still think the movie is worth seeing given how good parts are, but I think it falls well short of its potential.

I was going to wait till Jibbs got back to post the round but then realized there's only a handful of us. I'll sit this round out unless someone wants to take 2 or maybe Coop would want to partner with me since he already got Bond's movies out of the way. In any case, let's get it going. ROUND 170
Justin - Dracula PG Cooper - Jibbs
The due date for Round 170 will be Monday, June 8th, 2037.
Enjoy.
