I watched my movie last Wednesday, but my lazy ass just hasn't gotten around to getting my thoughts down yet. Put me down for the next round, though.

Mistress America (2015)
Mistress America follows a freshman in college as she tried to bond with her soon-to-be Manhattanite, 30-year-old sister-in-law. It has a strong indie tone as there's mostly quirky characters on a life journey doing weird things - actually, the kind of thing I wouldn't expect from Dracula. That's not to say its vapid or shallow, but I didn't see much genuine heart in this one. Tracy, the college student, wasn't very interesting and a bit (intentionally) unlikeable, and there were sidekicks that included one who was only a running gag to be the jealous girlfriend. The main character, Brooke, was a neat character, but then again the movie is a bit self-aware in this sense as it's her uniqueness that is discussed. I enjoyed the movie as a whole and found it funny at times, but it felt pretty average. I think what I liked most about it is the vague and hard to define relationships that ebb and flow in the film. There's a love interest, but not really, and the "in-law" relationship takes some turns and spills, drawing some fun lines between "friend," "family" and "stranger."

Phoenix
Phoenix tells the story of Nelly, a Holocaust survivor who barely escapes Auschwitz with her life. Her face shattered by a gunshot wound, she receives reconstructive surgery which doesn't exactly bring back her natural look. She soon starts a search for her husband but isn't recognized when she finally finds him. Rather he enlists her help, suspecting her a stranger, in pretending to be his thought-dead wife so he can get her inheritance money that her family left before they themselves were killed in concentration camps.
This movie is what you would call a slow burn. Over the course of the movie we see Nelly go through a range of emotions as she tries to discover whether her husband is the person who gave her up to the Nazis. It's also great watching her husband act and behave as if this woman has no idea who he is. It would have been easy to make the husband an unsympathetic, rotten guy who we root against throughout the film. Instead he almost seems as conflicted as she is. He talks about Nelly, what they used to do together, how she used to dress until finally he learns the truth about the person he asked to impersonate her. It's a very good watch as we see these two interact while mending their own personal webs of deception. To be honest it's a movie I had to absorb for a while after watching it but the more I think about it, the more I type about it right now, the more I come to appreciate it.

I just watched Phoenix last night and I feel the same way. The performances were great, and I felt they did a great job capturing the mood of the time reeling off the end of the war. The ending scene definitely did not disappoint. I haven't seen any of that director's other work, so I might check it out, I dug the subtlety of his style. Also, loved the vivid red used in the Phoenix Club sequences, very striking and contrasty with the muted palette of the rebuilding city.

FrequencyFrequency is an interesting little science-fiction film where a cop in 1999 is able to communicate with his father in 1969. His father, a fire-fighter, had died on the job in 69, but now the son is able to tell him what wrong and save his life. In doing so, the pair bring possibilities of a new future and must deal with the potential consequences. There's a really neat premise at the heart of Frequency and much of the film uses it to great effect. The idea of communicating to the past is a good one and using this as a vessel to explore the relationship between a deceased father and son is the perfect choice. The drama between these two characters works well, and the film peaks during a montage where the two simply talk all night after the father has been saved. Unfortunately, from there the film turns into a thriller where the pair's actions have allowed a serial killer to endure and they have to solve the mystery together. This stuff clashes with the more grounded drama the film was initially going for and the whole mystery struck me as cliché. There are still some neat scenes, like when the father has to had evidence in the house for the son to find thirty years later, but these moments become less and less. The thriller storyline becomes more and more prominent and the characters (particularly the villain) make some real dumb choices. By the third act, we get a chase sequence complete with some gunfire and a fake out where the killer seems to be dead, but returns for a last minute showdown with the film's heroes. The different time frames does make the climax a little more unique, but it still struck me as a big dumb climax for a film that really wasn't about that. And then, the film ends with a cheesy epilogue of everyone playing baseball together, as if to say, "Family, that's what it's all about". Except that hasn't been what the film's been about for the last hour. Tl;dr, I really enjoyed this film until it decided to stop being a drama and tried to become Seven. There's a really good premise here and the character relationships explored are effective. I can't help but think this might work better as a short story than a feature length film. C
