I'll have to think on this. I haven't seen The Sea Wolf, Unbearable Weight, or They Shall Not Grow Old but none of them are available on my current streamers. Unbearable Weight is available on Crave, it's just a question of if there's enough other movies I could watch in a month to justify the $20 price tag.

I'll give Brotherhood of the Wolf a whirl. You’re welcome. Let's make the due date March 1st. Thanks to MovieBuff801, I spent $5.99 on a monthly subscription to Peacock. 99.9% of America spent $5.99 on a Kansas City Chiefs game. I was the 0.01% that spent that much on the Holdovers. You’re welcome. It’s also wonderful to watch a Christmas movie in January. I believe the last time I did that was with Elf — 20 years ago. You know what else came out 20 years ago? Sideways. I was a big fan of that movie in 2004. I had a buddy back then that was obsessed with that movie. We bonded quite a bit over Sideways. He’s dead now. Actually, no. He’s not dead. I’m joking. Well — I haven’t seen him since 2006. He could be dead. Speaking of Sideways, I was watching Paul Giamatti in one of those Vanity Fair videos. They showed clips of Sideways. Boy, do I miss that 2000’s cinematography. I can see why SnoBorderZero is such a fan. You know what doesn’t have 2000’s cinematography? The Holdovers. See, I was gonna get to the Holdovers eventually. If PG-13 Cooper made it this far, Moonraker is the best James Bond movie. Search your heart. You know it to be true. The Holdovers is about three miserable people stuck together at a boarding school during the two-week holiday break. It’s fair to say this type of movie has become the norm for Alexander Payne. All we're missing is Kathy Bates naked in a hot tub. Payne has become as predictable as Wes Anderson or Tim Burton. You know what you’re getting with his movies, which is why I wasn’t in a rush to see it. I knew it would eventually pop up on Amazon Prime like all these Universal movies. Payne needs to do like the Coen Bros and do a black & white MacBeth and a road trip lesbian movie. Shake it up a bit. That all said, Payne is a master of his craft. The movie is very well made. The characters are all engaging. The performances are awards worthy. But there is an extra ingredient that makes these Payne movies standout. His main characters are very well thought out. Take the Paul Giamatti character for example. It would have been very easy to make him a jackass high school teacher that hates his students cause he’s an anti-social loser in his personal life. Most filmmakers would have settled with that. But Payne is like, “no — let’s make him feel like a real human being.” So he added this background story, and please don’t bitch about spoilers, about how Giamatti was kicked out of school over a violent incident and someone took pity on him and gave him this teaching job that he didn’t have the qualifications for. That’s why he’s such a by-the-book employee. He’s a guy with no degree and a criminal record that’s holding on to the one good job he could get. It’s those extra details that make the movie its seasoning. So yeah, check out the Holdovers. It’s a really good movie. Maybe even great. We'll see how it holds up in 20 years. We’re all gonna rewatch Sideways, right? Sideways watch party? Yeah? We gotta immerse ourselves in that 2000’s cinematography.

AirI'll give Brotherhood of the Wolf a whirl.
I haven't seen it but it did pretty clearly inspire my favourite videogame. Ghosts N' Goblins?

A Woman Under The InfluenceFunny how the last movie I did for the film club, Force Majeure, was a look into the relationship of a seemingly normal couple and how it's tested due to pretty wild circumstances. While it's not exactly the same structure, A Woman Under The Influence again observes a family that's being tested, this time by a mentally ill woman and a husband who's desperately trying to hold it together. There's no traditional plot structure here, instead we watch a woman as she bottoms out, finds treatment, then tries to return to her family. We witness her personal journey and the toll it takes on her family over time. This movie is actually my first gander into the filmography of John Cassavetes. I was previously assigned The Killing of a Chinese Bookie during the very last film club of the original forum before we migrated over here but I think the film club, that round specifically, may have been lost in the shuffle. I've been meaning to go back and finally fill out my missing assignment and after watching A Woman Under The Influence I have a newfound desire to do so considering how intense, gruelling and personal this film felt. Anchored by two very tense and powerful performances, A Woman Under The Influence begins with Nick, a blue collar worker, trying to get home for a romantic evening with his wife Mabel while their kids stay with Mabel's mother. A work emergency prevents him from getting home until the next day which prompts Mabel to walk the town at night, get drunk and spend the night with a stranger. At first I thought alcoholism would prove the 'Under The Influence' part of the title and made me think that I had better buckle up. My expectations were derailed when it was revealed to be Mabel's mental health that's at stake. It's her decline paired with the immeasurable stress on the family that makes A Woman Under The Influence one of the most intense movies I've seen in quite a while despite mostly taking place in a living room and kitchen. While it doesn't strictly follow the traditional storytelling structure, there is a story surrounded by some sensitive scenes and other quite harrowing scenes. One that really took me in was seeing Nick pick his kids up early from school in order to take them to the beach. It was a move out of pure desperation to help give his family some sense of normalcy on the outside while suffering severe strain from within. Pair that with a later scene where Nick throws Mabel a 'welcome home' party after a months long stay in a hospital. Knowing full well that this party would cause a great degree of anxiety for Mabel, even being reminded of that fact by other characters, Nick's desperation forces him to fit this round peg into the square hole. That doesn't even speak to Mabel's journey as she tries to be the good housewife, doting spouse and, most importantly, the nurturing mother that she is naturally drawn to but struggles with due to her condition. It's pretty wild to see that this was produced in the mid-70s, a time of radical change in the film industry but even in a time when the ground was shifting tremendously this movie still felt ahead of its time. I sat there watching the film and wondering if they had any idea whether this movie would find an audience and if so who that audience would even be. Reading about the film afterwards it seems as though there were indeed similar concerns which made it a struggle to get the movie off the ground. It's a difficult film to watch and absorb but feels tremendous at the same time. I would hope that this is required viewing for people who want to make grounded, low-budget films to show people what can be accomplished with a couple sets and cameras. Sitting here going through the film again in my brain makes me want to keep going but in short, it's a very moving film and from a filmmaking perspective can show aspiring filmmakers what can be done with a good script and four walls. A so says Doomsday I owe The Killing of a Chinese Bookie to....somebody. It will happen.

You Hurt My Feelings
I am pretty sure I had not heard about this movie, despite it being a recent release this year. Its a small little drama, but quite interesting and well-written. It was a comfortable watch in some ways, uncomfortable in others. The story follows a married couple, one a writer the other a shrink, neither of which are great at their jobs. SO if you also feel insecure in your own career, you will likely find this poignant. The crux of the story is that the wife overhears the husband talking about how he doesn't like her new book but can't tell her. Its a good conflict to pin the movie on, low stakes but intriguing.
I often complain that Hollywood hates marriage and most movies about a marriage are usually about it ending. I'm not sure if Drac picked up on my complaints and recommended this to me because its about a marriage that actually works quite well or not, but I appreciate it anyways. They aren't the only characters here though. We also have her sister and brother-in-law as well as their son in his early 20s. They all have their own things going on as well, which tie into the themes. We also see some of his therapy clients, two of which are David Cross and Amber Tamblyn (whom I barely recognized) who provide some fun scenes.
This is an interesting examination of conflicts in relationships that are solvable but also seem quite serious at the time. Its also on some level people coming to grips with their own mediocrity, which is also an interesting idea. But surrounding this is an easy watch with characters who are likable and well-acted. A good recommend.
8/10

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
*Review contains spoilers. I remember seeing commercials for Brotherhood of the Wolf back when it hit DVD and Pay-Per-View back in 2002 a lot, but I didn't know what it was about. So, now, when I discovered it revolved around two warriors sent to a French county to investigate a string of killings possibly committed by a werewolf...yeah, my interest was piqued. So, does it deliver on that promise? Mostly. For one, the genre mashup of action, horror and period piece plays well and is all integrated rather smoothly. All of the various fight sequences are exciting and fun with good choreography and a high energy level, and when it comes to the more horror-infused sequences, director Christophe Gans manages to create a pretty good sense of atmosphere. And that's on top of the solid job he also does of recreating this time period in French history. But the key is that he never makes it feel too stuffy or self-important. Gans clearly recognizes that he's making a full-on action adventure kind of movie, so he manages to keep the overall tone in line with what you would expect, and the movie is all the better for it. Also worth singling out is Mark Dacoscos, who plays one of the two main characters, and brings a lot of presence to the film through his fairly badass performance. So, then, that brings us to the parts of the film related to the killings/attacks. This is where the movie sort of stumbles, mainly due to the route it chooses to take in order to answer the mystery of what's going on here. So, spoiler territory here, but it's not an actual werewolf or anything committing the murders, but rather a lion trained by the perpetrator who's a part of the titular secret society behind everything. So, for one, once we actually get a look at the lion and the get-up it's in...hoo boy, do the limitations of this movie's budget come into focus. As a result, a lot of the suspense is sucked out of the horror movie side of this, but at least the movie has its action/adventure elements to fall back on. I can't say for sure whether or not the revelation that this was all non-supernatural was disappointing itself or if it's just the very lackluster look of the beast and the movie's miscalculated tendency to keep showing it in the second half is what's most disappointing, but the movie still loses a little something after the reveal, when it was pretty much aces beforehand. But then that goes with the other qualm I have, which is that this movie is just too long. Apparently, there are three different cuts of this movie and I watched the 150-minute Director's Cut, whereas the theatrical is something like 142. I don't think this is an issue of eight minutes, though. I think this thing could've been maybe half an hour shorter and still been just as good, maybe even more so. But my complaints ultimately don't take away from Brotherhood of the Wolf too much, because it still works as a pretty thrilling action/adventure movie. I myself would make some script alterations, but still...when this thing works, it definitely hits.

So, I'm gonna be able to do The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent but it won't be until March. I need to sign up for Crave to catch up with The Color Purple but I wanna squeeze my Disney Plus membership (which I need for The Creator and fucking Flamin' Hot) first before I add another streaming serivce to my bills.

Okay Dooms, I dont think the Proposition movie I have on Prime is at all the one you are thinking of. This movie is about a Welsh widow who is going to be losing her estate to the government. I have made it 15 minutes in, and it is awful. It looks like a bad Canadian production with horrid acting. This was the wrong review I mentioned today.
Also, I noticed that I recommended Neverending Hunt for the wilderpeople twice, and he didnt say anything but just posted the same review each time.
