Dracula I’d like to amend my list if possible. Have you seen Black Dynamite? I just saw that it’s available on Hulu. If you haven’t watched Scarlet Street yet I’d like to very enthusiastically submit Black Dynamite as an option.

The Kid is fantastic, you're in for a good one.
And the score for The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 is pretty awesome in a throwback 70s kind of way.

I can do Super Dark Times. Do you need a new list? I tried to make the options streamable. According to Letterboxd's JustWatch feaute, The Lady from Shanghai is on Prime, Blow Out is on Hoopla, Day of the Dead is on HBOMax and Tubi, Twelve Monkeys is on HBOMax, and The Harder They Come is on Kanopy, Hoopla, and Showtime. But I can give you more choices if these don't work.

What the deuce is Hoopla? Your local library probably has access, you use that to sign in and you get some movies and stuff. Specifically I only really use I for graphic novels and some obscure audiobooks, but they had Burning on there a while ago. Some decent movie selections.

I know Los Angeles county has Kanopy...but I live in a town just south of LA proper that has its own school district and library. And that library doesn't have Kanopy.

Force Majeure One of the last films I saw in theaters prior to the shutdown was the Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus American remake Downhill, which if nothing else, felt kind of flat. I felt like I had owed it to myself to see the original Swedish film, to at least see how different or comparable the two were. Knowing that the original from director Ruben Östlund, I figured there wouldn't be much other than the general story. Having now seen it, I can safely report this is true. Force Majeure tells the story of a married couple, Tomas and his wife Ebba, vacationing in the French alps with their two children, Vera and Harry. One day, while on the deck of a restaurant eating lunch, the family notices a controlled avalanche heading their way. As it picks up in speed and size, everyone on the deck begins to panic, including Tomas who decides to leave his family and run for safety. He happened to be filming the avalanche on his Iphone (Which comes into play later on), and after a thick fog evaporates you find out, spoiler alert, everyone is safe and sound. This does however, set up the crux of the film, which is centered around the fractured marriage Tomas and Ebba now have. Not to keep picking on Downhill, but one of the noticeable differences is the slow burn of the issue at hand. Ostlund makes no mistake of what transpired, as we can clearly see Tomas abandon his family in that split second, but what makes it interesting is Tomas's inability to accept the events as they actually played out. Throughout, we see him constantly refuse to acknowledge that he left Vera alone with their children, even as she recounts the events multiple times to different friends. What comes out of this is an interesting discussion on the idea of perception, and how far one is willing to go to defend their version of a traumatic event. Sure, we may know that Tomas is full of shit, and the actor does a great job of trying to convince us, but it's still fascinating to watch him defend his actions. Tomas digs in so deep that it almost made me want to back to the beginning and say "did he really run away, or is Vera lying?" Force Majeure deftly balances the line of dark comedy and drama to the point that you aren't even sure at certain points if certain scenes are supposed to be comedic or not. A handful of scenes also stick out for their great comedic timing and set up, most notably the "Hey my friend thinks you're really cute" scene, which ends up in a way that I didn't see coming, but found myself really laughing at. I can relate. All in all good performances and some great shots help make this a much better version than the boring American remake. Ostlund and his team do a nice job of letting the story develop without being rushed and it avoids familiar story beats or tropes for the most part. He lets certain shots linger on for emphasized effect (I'm thinking right after the avalanche or towards the end when Tomas looks for Vera on the mountain) that definitely stick with you. 7/10 I know you already started the next round, but count me in for the following one Doomsday.

The Kid
I'm not a big silent film aficionado, but I do enjoy Chaplin films quite a bit. The Kid is one of his earlier films and ended up being a lot more on the dramatic side than I was expecting. The story of a hobo raising an orphaned baby is quite touching and the kid actor is actually good. It certainly suffers from a lack of fun and interesting set pieces that Chaplin would become so good at in his later career. But at a 52 minute run time, this still works great.
There is a really weird scene where he imagines everyone as angels, but it was a dream sequence? Pretty bizarre. I personally couldn't see how this tied into the film. Can anyone help me out here?
I like how the story came together at the end and came around full circle. A strong early example of film as a storytelling vessel. I'm referring specifically to the thread with the birth mother here. I do think they should have established her regret on leaving the kid more early on, but it still works for a satisfying ending.
8/10
