I'll do Killing of a Sacred Deer because I know it's caused massive tension here on these boards. Now I'll have to see if I land in camp Phantom or camp Coop.

Just Mercy (2019) The story of the wrongly convicted death row prisoner Walter McMillian has been out in the public for a while. I think I first encountered it through an extended NPR segment and when I listened to it in that form I remember thinking “this is clearly an instance of injustice worth examining, but it’s kind of a banal injustice.” The story doesn’t quite have a special story hook to it, it’s just one of many examples of police and lawyers screwing up and being stubborn about it. Watching this film dramatization of the story I’m not sure I’ve really been dissuaded from feeling that way. This is a pretty well put together and acted movie, but it’s not a particularly creative one. The whole thing had a certain whiff of the “been there, done that” to it. The courtroom drama proceeds more or less as you’d expect it to and director Destin Daniel Cretton doesn’t really bring a lot of unique cinematic ideas to the table. That having been said, I don’t think this was really made for jaded people like me who’ve already seen dozens of courtroom dramas and is also already familiar with the story at the center, it’s made for a more mainstream audiences who could probably use a reminder as to how flawed the justice system can be and how much of a mistake it is to incorporate punishments with the finality of capital punishment. *** out of Five

I might be a smidge late, but I do have Plan 9 squarely in my sights. Also, 1godzillafan, I'm gonna go ahead and add Goodfellas to your recommendations. If you've already committed to something else then that's cool, but now that I know, I gotta give it a plug.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Where to begin with this movie? First and foremost, I knew nothing about this other than it was a Yorgos Lanthimos film which nowadays can speak volumes. I've seen and thoroughly enjoyed The Favourite and also made it about halfway through The Lobster before I got derailed by life and never finished it up. At the time though I was pretty lukewarm on it but it deserves to be completed at some point. I suppose I was expecting to see an offbeat comedy/drama like his other films and had no idea The Killing of a Sacred Deer was going to be this quasi-horror thriller about a doctor who's family is plagued by mysterious illnesses that could be coming from an awkward teenager whom the doctor was only trying to help.
I have to say there was a time in my life where I despised Colin Farrell. Maybe it was his melodramatic overdrive in Alexander or his silly fake tough guy role in Miami Vice but it wasn't until recently that I started to warm up to him again. He shines in this film as Dr. Steven Murphy, a cardiologist with an opthamologist wife (Nicole Kidman) and two children. He's recently befriended Martin, the son of a former patient who died on the operating table. Martin is awkward, uncertain, has no filter and is constantly seeking Dr. Murphy's approval well beyond the point of discomfort. One day Dr. Murphy's son wakes up unable to walk and doctors can't diagnose his condition. Martin warns Dr. Murphy that this is happening due to Murphy's involvement in Martin's father's death and that his whole family will die unless Murphy chooses one to kill. Murphy is enraged and doesn't believe him until he slowly watches the rest of his family succumb to the plagues that Martin warned him about
As I've said before, I'm not a fan of horror films because so many of them are at the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality. It does seem though that we're starting to get a resurgence in quality, legitimately scary horror movies and there are several I really enjoy. The Witch, Hereditary, Get Out. A Quiet Place and Midsommar are just a few of the recent horror films that have really resonated with critics and fans alike and demonstrated that horror films are effective as entertainment as well as art. The Killing of a Sacred Deer I think can be placed alongside those other films in that it's a compelling horror movie that's trying to stand on its own. The acting and characters drive the film and Martin serves as an impractical but powerful vehicle. There are a few things that rubbed me the wrong way, namely the dialogue and delivery which oftentimes sounded very forced and scripted but it makes me wonder if that was Lanthimos' original intent. If so I'm not sure I see the utility behind it. In any case, consider me a fan, I'm glad that this can be added to the list of modern horror films that are helping shift my perception of the genre.

The King of Marvin Gardens
Even though there is a line about Monopoly, this is not a movie about Monopoly. Disappointing. Despite that, I soldiered on and watched it anyways.
The movie starts with a an interesting close-up monologue with Jack Nicholson, but then moves to a film that feels rather aloof. This isn't out of the ordinary for films of this type in the 70s. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. IN this case I felt a bit of a disconnect with the movie despite the intimate opening. I don't feel like it set up the premise or, more importantly, the stakes very well. As a result I felt like I had to try to piece together the basic plot, which frankly got tiring.
Jack Nicholson was fine, but not an outstanding performance from him during a time where he had tons of outstanding performances. I really liked Bruce Dern, however. He felt like a unique character you don't see much of, and had a strong sense of realism. Ellen Burstyn's character made no sense to me. And her ending really threw me for a loop. 510

Plan 9 from Outer Space
So this is the infamous Plan 9, huh? At one point declared the worst movie ever made and an icon of "so bad it's good" filmmaking, does Edward D. Wood Jr.'s magnum opus live up to the hype? Yes and no. To be sure, the movie is bafflingly and hilariously incompetent. The basic premise of aliens resurrecting the dead to wage war on the earth could no doubt have made for a good B-movie (that's almost what Night of the Living Dead is) but the actual story that follows is completely non-sensical. The aliens' goals are never consistent and its never clear what level of alien invasion we're in. Flying saucers wreak havoc across the skies and apparently destroy a whole town ("a small town, I'll admit - but nevertheless a town of people, people who died") but it's also still a conspiracy/secret? And what's the timeline of events? The story seems to unfold over a couple of days, but some of the dialogue about being in contact with the aliens seem like months or even years of contact have gone by. Then of course there's Wood's direction, amusingly clumsy throughout. Long scenes of actors standing in a straight line awkwardly sputtering lines to a mostly stationary camera. Doesn't matter if it's a dialogue scene or a shootout or a confrontation with extra-terrestrials; stand in the line.
I can at least understand that as a convenient way to quickly block and shoot a scene, but some of the behavior of the actors (notably that one detective's handling of a gun) is ludicrously absurd. The fact that the footage is cobbled from all over the place also means that scenes (particularly those involving Bela Lugosi) never match. But the real treat of the inept filmmaking is the dialogue which is unlike anything I've ever seen. Endless rambling as scenes stretch on and on, Wood's screenplay circling the same vaguely defined point for minutes on it. The dialogue is so insane that I frequently found myself laughing out loud and saying "this is amazing". For context, I was watching Plan 9 by myself. The end result is a movie with immensely memorable dialogue, and yet strangely unquotable. Whenever I try to think of my favourite lines my mind ends up going into a spiral that can't recall quite what the details were, only that they made me laugh.
But okay, Plan 9 from Outer Space is a poorly made movie, what else is new? Is it the worst movie ever made? Not even close, and it isn't just that no movie this entertaining could be that bad. The film comes from an era before quality consumer-grade filmmaking equipment become widely available to the general public and anyone could make a movie. As such, there is a basic level of professionalism on display. Plan 9 is at least shot on film by a cinematographer who knew to light the set and keep everyone in focus. The dialogue may be almost surreal in its terribleness, but at least it's recorded with professional sound equipment. That may seem a low-bar, but consider that the rise of consumer grade equipment has dramatically lowered the basement for what counts as "the worst movie ever". There are so many feature films of such low visual and audio quality that you cannot even tell what's happening. But not only can I understand Plan 9, I also see what Ed was going for. The film very clearly wants to be Dracula meets The Day the Earth Stood Still, and while it fails spectacularly, that those intentions are clear at all is an accomplishment. Say what you will about the quality of the special effects, the sets, costumes, or the music, they all at least convey the idea of sci-fi/horror.
I can't quite give Plan 9 from Outer Space a positive score, but I also don't feel comfortable giving it a bad one either. It isn't just that for all the film's incompetence it's very entertaining (although it certainly is) but there's a purity to the vision here. Ed Wood wanted to make a sci-fi/horror movie about aliens resurrecting the dead. And he did. And it's shit.
