Damn, Coop is probably too young to remember when Begnini was the talk of the town for about a week.

That was a lovable moment at the time and we all watched his weird concentration camp movie. I never wrote my review for Life is Beautiful for you. I'll have to do that sometime. What a disgraceful, pathetic, piece of shit movie it is. Benigni is absolutely the most annoying, untalented person to ever grace the screen. Watching Life is Beautiful made me sick, like how the fuck do people think that's a great film? It won OSCARS! Multiple. What. The. Fuck. Neverending will have to elaborate as to why in 1997 Hollywood was amused by that cretin. It's so clear watching the film that Benigni had recently watched Schindler's List, realized the easiest way to manipulate his audience is to use the Holocaust as the backdrop, and then craft his wholly unrealistic and unlikeable character as this sort of symbolic martyr for being just the greatest sacrificial lamb of all: the one who preserves a child's innocence. Benigni is a disgrace and anyone with fond memories of Life is Beautiful really needs to rewatch and reevaluate it. Thank god he instantly ruined all of his good graces with that fucking Pinnochio movie that looks like a complete abomination. Fuck Roberto Benigni.

Before Sunrise (1995)
This was alarmingly pleasant. While the movie consists of mostly walking and talking, I found myself sucked in constantly.
American Jesse (Ethan Hawke) meets Céline (Julie Delpy) on a train from Budapest--Jesse is departing back to the US from Vienna and Céline is returning to Paris from visiting her grandmother. After she moves seats to escape an arguing German-speaking couple, the two hit it off in the lounge car discussing their dreams, and when they reach Vienna Jesse asks Céline to keep him company as he walks around the city at night killing time before his flight the next morning.
I'm slightly older than the duo's reported age in the Before Sunset, and I'm having a hard time wrestling with whether I've lost some of that youthful wonder myself, or if my initial observation that no one talks like they do in Before Sunrise is accurate. The truth is, I don't think it matters. Director Richard Linklater only interrupts his long shots of walking-and-talking when he wants you to focus on their facial reactions. Within 20 minutes I was reminded why Hawke has been considered a great actor of his generation--every reaction (awe, furtive glances, horniness, cynicism, horniness) seems sincere. Delpy is given more room to shine in Sunset, but certainly matches Hawke as the movie goes on. I don't think I could quote you two sentences of dialogue from this film, but I certainly felt every emotion that the characters did.
In the end, the movie is endlessly charming and certainly earns its butterfly-feeling of young love. I'm probably going to have to interupt my Phantomknight thread-watching to watch the third one as I'm hooked.

No joke, after reading the Benigni posts in this thread earlier today I sat and thought about Life Is Beautiful which I legit haven't watched in close to 20 years. I thought 'I remember liking that movie and everyone at the time seemed to love it and I even watched it in a couple classes in school but I wonder if it's a movie that'll come off as a big piece of shit nowadays.'

So did you watch both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset? Yes one on Saturday next on Sunday. I do think it would have been best to have watched them when they came out, to have the passage of time hit more.

I watched both of them when I was in my early twenties so I think that shred of hopeless romanticism was still alive in me. Now I'm married and any of that has been dead for a long time.

I'm 36 and single. Before Sunset hit me a bit more. Delpy in that car scene is just bringong forward a lot of existential fears, but the continuing hope message is just what I needed.

I'm not the biggest fan of the guy either but he's not that bad. I dare say that when he's not making holocaust movies or pretending to be a puppet child I generally consider him a fairly charming performer with a warm demeanor and a rapid patter, almost like an Italian Robin Williams. He obviously wasn't showing off his best side during his moment of international fame but I think his career does have some value.

Begnini would be improved 500% if he amped up the Italian stereotypes to 11.

Maybe he's less annoying in movies that aren't Life is Beautiful or Night on Earth. I think that's all I've seen him in. And maybe Pinocchio. I have vague memories of a nightmarish live-action Pinocchio from childhood but I have no idea if I ever saw the full thing and I also might be conflating my memories of it and A.I.

Maybe he's less annoying in movies that aren't Life is Beautiful or Night on Earth. When Life is Beautiful took over the nation, two of his movies played on television all the time. Johnny Stecchino, and as 1godzillafan mentioned, Son of Pink Panther. I thought Life is Beautiful was better than both of those. By a wide margin. But like Doomsday, I haven’t watched it in 20 years and don’t know how it holds up. Although the premise did seem shaky to me at the time. Or this: Or this:

I think it's time to admit that any live-action version of Pinocchio is going to wind up being nightmare fuel.
