Oh damn I pulled a Doomsday and recommended a movie you already watched on my recommendation. After I put effort into your Scorsese inspired list, you come at me with a generic list, and one you sent me in a previous round. What an ass wipe. I have a master list of movies to pull for this film club. There's one of two ways I can use it; I can either pull movies and make a list for each partner and that list might include one you may have already seen before and if someone needs a new list I just pull more movies, and yeah I make selects based on who my partner is and what I think they might like so I don't just lob random stuff at people, OR I can scour this thread at the start of every round and find out exactly which of my movies have been viewed by whom and when. I go with the first one.

I know time has slowed down for some of us, but come on, this was like 2 rounds ago.

PG CooperThe Young Master (1980)If there’s a flaw to these early Jackie Chan movies it’s that they follow the same premise. Jackie is a martial arts student that has to overcome an obstacle. Anyone that isn’t a hardcore fan probably couldn’t tell these movies apart. Not that it matters cause the point of them is the humor and creatively choreographed fight scenes, which they all excel at. The Young Master is noteworthy for being Jackie’s sophomore effort as a director. He would go on to be quite prolific behind the camera and you can see him experiment a bit. There’s scenes in which he’ll try out something visually or through editing and it almost feels like you’re watching someone’s college film. It’s difficult to explain in writing. That’s why we need PG Cooper video essays. But rest assured this movie has a bit more flair than Jackie’s other early work. Also, by early, I mean his Kung Fu movies, before he became “Jackie the Stuntman.” In case Dracula comes after me.

Secret Honor
Philip Baker Hall, or Bookman for you 90s kids, is the lone actor in this fictional story of Richard Nixon. He's alone in his study with a tape recorder, bottle of scotch and a revolver. He spends the first few minutes trying to get the recorder to work, an 80s version of an old man fiddling with those confounded contraptions that kids used. Once he begins he starts speaking to 'Your Honor,' a fictional judge in a courtroom where Nixon speaks as the defense attorney, representing the accused Richard Nixon. He begins speaking about his early life, his family members who had died of tuberculosis, their move to California and how he became involved in politics. His one-sided trial soon devolves into those who have wronged him throughout his career including the Kennedys, Eisenhower, Henry Kissinger and other prime political characters of the 50s and 60s. He paints himself as a servant but also as a victim, someone who was set up to fail. He constantly interjects to remind Roberto whom I assume is a personal assistant to Nixon to 'strike that' and disregard what he just said. Ultimately it's a portrayal of a man who is struggling with his mistakes, his past and how he will be portrayed in American history.
Personally I haven't watched a lot of footage of Nixon nor do I know much about his personal character traits or quirks. Assuming that this is a somewhat accurate portrayal Hall really does bring a sense of humanity to Nixon but not in a terribly sympathetic way. He's constantly losing his train of thought, ranting and raving, changing topics and leaning on alcohol. As this is a one-man show the entire film rests on Hall's performance and he expertly portrays the mentally broken ex-President. My knowledge with Eisenhower, Kissinger etc. is more than a little but certainly not masterful and I think a movie like this would have a deeper impact on someone who knows the history or at least someone who lived through it, people my parents' age for example. Nevertheless it's an engaging movie with a great performance directed by Robert Altman, a director who's pretty hit and miss with me. I would put this in the 'hit' category.
B+ so says Doomsday

I'm leaning toward the Sandler Halloween movie. The list of films that none of us have seen is short.

Corpus Christi (2020) Corpus Christi was something of a surprise nominee in the Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards last year (meaning it had the privilege of losing to Parasite) and because it was a surprise nominee it was the only of those five films to not get American distribution before the Oscar ceremony. By the time it was in theaters here the moment seemed to have passed for it, but I am glad to be catching up on it now. The film is about a troubled young man who is released from prison and is supposed to report to a sawmill/halfway home in a rural town but he’s gone through something of a spiritual awakening while in prison and when he arrives in town he finds himself sort of falling into impersonating a priest and when the town’s real priest ends up having to skip town he ends up taking over the church fraudulently. As the title and subject matter world suggest this is a pretty intensely steeped in Catholicism, which is a religious tradition in which this story would have particular resonance. Unlike Protestantism, where anyone who can gain a following can theoretically become a reverend, impersonating a priest without actually being part of the hierarchy is rather blasphemous. The film tries to question if this sinner might actually be able to conduct his job with more purity than the more diplomatic priests and also may be better positioned to address issues of forgiveness, but it never really comes to easy answers for these questions. I quite liked Bartosz Bielenia in the lead role and thought the film was pretty well short and composed. On the downside, a lot of the film involved this sub-plot about the town being angry at the “priest” for wanting to give a funeral to a drunk driver/manslaugherer which seemed like a bit of an over-reaction by the town and I might have liked a more interesting conflict in that section of the script.
