You think I'm gonna help line Chris Nolan's pockets? You know, those articles of excess clothing that are found in pants, shorts and certain cuts of jackets that are used to hold and transport personal possessions? I think not!

Columbus (2017)I went into this movie blind, based solely on loving John Cho's performance in Searching (2018), another small budget indie where the former Harold of Harold and Kumar flexed his chops as a worried father trying to track his missing daughter's movements from her laptop. That movie is carried by his performance, and this too is carried by outstanding performances from Cho and Haley Lu Richardson. Set in the present, the film is set into action by Jin's (Cho) estranged father falling ill while in the city on a lecture tour from his native Korea. Expected to be present should his father die or recover, Jin grows listless and befriends library assistant Casey (Richardson) while on a smoke break. Casey feels trapped in the city--she 's a recent high school graduate working alongside a doctoral student faux-beau (Rory Culkin) and reminded of her high school friends' lives outside of the city when they come to visit on break. While Jin is weary of academic discussions of architecture given his fraught relationship with his father, Casey is an architecture nerd who spends her smoke breaks rehearsing how to give tours of the city and can't help but try to share her love of the art with Jin. The plot of the movie is deeply internal, with dialogue that hints at Jin's and Casey's fears and insecurities, but rather than a love story director Kogonada is crafting something more akin to the older/younger friendship dynamic of Lost in Translation--though far less creepy. Kogonada plays Richardson's deep wounded expressiveness and Cho's world-weariness so well off each other that anything approaching a romance would feel a cheat. Of course there is a reason why Casey doesn't move away to follow her architectural dreams which I won't spoil here. It is wholly different circumstance, but if you remember your first significant break-up, you can completely buy into every emote from Richardson's face. Not having traveled the midwest going into this movie, I assumed this was about Columbus, Ohio, but was surprised to learn this was about a small city of 45,000 in Indiana where a local industrialist instituted a program in the mid-20th century to draw Architects in for public buildings and art. Kogonada frames each shot meticulously, framing the architecture of the city around the characters symmetrically, just off center, or towering 5-6 story buildings over the characters; lining up the sight lines on the kitchen counters in Casey's house with the trees on her street seen outside the window. Apparently this guy is a video essayist like PG Cooper and spends all of his free time analyzing blocking. Well, it shows. I don't think I've seen a more meticulously shot film since Hereditary. An absolutely wonderful film. Better than I could've hoped, and i'd definitely recommend it. A.

The Cranes Are Flying (1957)
Early on, I remember thinking how different The Cranes Are Flying was from the Mikhail Kalatozov film I watched last year, I Am Cuba. While that anthology was very much a document of socialist revolution in Cuba (and was produced in part as propaganda), the early portions of The Cranes Are Flying depict a much more innocent and human romance. All art is political, of course, and especially when it's a story of how war intervenes in people's lives, but all the same I was struck by how focused Kalatozov was on building the personal stakes of his characters. Of course, as the film goes on, Kalatozov's political interests become more apparent, with The Cranes Are Flying offering one of the most unheroic portraits of war I can think of, particularly from the 1950s. The few glimpses of combat we get are disorienting and costly, but most of the film is actually set on the homefront. As Veronika struggles with air raids, nursing, and the lingering fear her lover Boris is dead, she must also contend with the advancements of Boris's cousin. The film actually reminded me a lot of Kenji Mizoguchi and Ugetsu in particular in its exploration of how the ravages of war bring violence to the women at home too.
Much of what makes the film special is the filmmaking, particularly the beautiful cinematography. The movie is just littered with beautiful imagery, with Kalatozov and cinematographer Sergey Urusevsky (who also shot I Am Cuba) using these fluid camera movements which are certainly not invisible, but never feel show-offy. The film also uses some really sharp lighting to distinguish the characters and I appreciated how even the early romantic sections have a lot of shadow, symbolizing the ominous future to come. Finally, for as much as The Cranes Are Flying is a visual experience, the script is really something. Not only is the base story fascinating, but the script also does a great job placing the viewer in Veronika's shoes, strongly suggesting Boris's fate yet placing enough ambiguity to instill a nagging doubt. Masterful stuff.
A+
Also, if it helps to be paired up with a Canadian, I can partner with Ian next round.
