I just watched this for the first time in at least 25 years, and it's obviously still a classic, but why the feck do they send astronauts into the house to fetch E.T. in full spacesuits?!
I lol'd pretty hard.

I lol'd pretty hard. Aren't those meant to be hazmat suits to protect the team against any alien diseases per standard quarantine procedure? That’s exactly what they are. Plus, the cinematography in that scene is fantastic and what signals the second half of that movie and what elevated it into classic status. Everything leading up to that is just nonsense with E.T. eating Reese’s Pieces and getting drunk. Once the government shows up, that’s when the stakes are raised and the excitement comes and the emotions are put in place. So my reaction is the polar opposite of Deexan. When those hazmat suits show up I’m like, “now’s when things are getting good.” |

The scenes are fine, it's just the aesthetics of the "hazmat" suits.
They're fully blown NASA spacesuits complete with pulled down shiny visor. It's ridiculous.
After the initial few guys enter in them, then everybody else that joins is wearing standard hazmats.
