It’s fine.
As a “finale” it’s underwhelming, but as a general X-Men movie it’s fine.
It’s more somber than your typical X-Men movie. It’s trying to emulate the “drama” approach of X2: X-Men United but Simon Kinberg ain’t no Bryan Singer. We can talk shit about Singer all day long but dude knows how to direct. Hans Zimmer score is fine. His usual stuff. Acting is good as you’d expect. Story is okay. Fox was never gonna execute the Phoenix saga properly. It’s up to Marvel/Disney now.
Overall, as I said, it’s fine. Critics are trolling.

I liked “Apocalypse” so I hear it’s close in quality
I’m sure I’ll like this movie just fine.

I liked “Apocalypse” so I hear it’s close in quality I’m sure I’ll like this movie just fine. Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix are polar opposite movies. If you’re gonna base your review on that, that’s just silly. I’m also not sure if there’s much comparison to Last Stand. There’s similarities since both are written by Simon Kinberg. We get child Jean, Jean killing someone, climactic fight scenes with X-Men powers full in display, love conquers all finale and an emotional epilogue at the school/mansion. But both movies had wildly different agendas. Last Stand actually felt like the conclusion and had to hit certain story and character beats. Dark Phoenix, on the other hand, came across as if Simon Kinberg was oblivious to the fact that Disney was gonna purchase Fox. It felt like another installment in the ongoing adventures of the First Class. That’s why a lot of people are now saying that Days of Future Past should have been the last one. Although it was made as a course correction, it also managed to tie everything up in a nice bow.

I just read a lot of reviews of friends who said they enjoyed it as much as “Apocalypse” So I’m sure I’ll like it at least. Critics are definitely overblowing it’s level of badness, as I hear it Endgame doesn’t make movies like X-men bad movies, just different. Also I’m glad they didn’t end the series after DotFP, since I like these actors in these roles

I'm not really sure I understand the vitriol towards this movie. And I went in pessimistic, having not liked Apocalypse at all.
Some of the dialogue is bad, but the story structure was pretty good, and I felt this new cast was coming into their own.

Some of the dialogue is bad, but the story structure was pretty good, and I felt this new cast was coming into their own. I suspect much of it is due to how the franchise has once again completely squandered one of the best written X-Men stories of all time. I saw it this morning. From an objective point of view, it's just a poorly written movie. From the perspective of an X-Men fan, it's infuriating. I found it particularly absurd how instantly the public switches from loving the X-Men to hating them. Kids have action figures of these people, and cheer for them when they land at the airport. Only a day after rescuing astronauts from certain death, the government is talking about internment camps! This is a world that's full of mutants, who no doubt cause serious incidents on a regular basis. The X-Men exist specifically to deal with that sort of thing, and it's pretty clear that they've been doing it publicly and effectively for a while. It's also clear that the government has been relying on the X-Men to do just that, otherwise Xavier wouldn't have a direct line to the White House.

Not a completely unfair point, but perhaps consider how quickly the public turned on Muslims after 9/11 or how Germany turned on the Jewish population after they were accused of being involved in the Reichstag fire and it isn't completely crazy. Might have required a bit of a bigger disaster though.

What do you want from the story? I actually thought it was structured fairly well and also had a lot of conflicts spring up from it that were interesting. What aspects of the story were absent? What should have been approved upon, apart from the public reaction?

While the public may have largely turned on muslims in the wake of 9/11, the military didn't send out special forces units to round them up on US soil. If soldiers aren't sent out after the thousands of deaths from the Twin Towers, then they certainly aren't going out when three police officers and Mystique are killed. There was no justifiable reason for the military to go after Jean. Most of the human deaths in the movie were a direct result of the unrealistic military response.

Not exactly Trank 2.0, but I can understand the comparison. Lauren Shuler-Donner is hardly the fledgling filmmaker that Trank was when he stuck his foot in his mouth on twitter over Fant4stic. Plus, she didn't actually say anything negative about the movie. It was still a stupid thing to say, but it won't have any seriously negative effect on her career.

I think I'm more in line with IanTheCool on this one. Sure, certain things stood out as jumpy or not fully developed, but I thought the core of the story worked surprisingly well. And I, too, went in wary. Certain emotional beats landed fairly effectively for me -- the ones relating more to the characters we've spent a few movies with more so than Jean's -- and the acting was good. I got caught up enough in it. Is it some of the best the X-Men franchise has to offer? Absolutely not, but I found some good stuff on display here where I thought I wouldn't.

I liked it just fine. It’s not the best X-Men movie, but it wasn’t going to be. I liked it more than Origins Wolverine and Last Stand. Plus I loved the last shot of the movie, Xavier and Magneto playing chess, with Phoenix flying above 8/10

Sophie turner is not a good actress at this point in time.
