Live Blogging 1999..... by Prince

Let me pause the movie a bit so I can talk about it.

First off, Burton assembled quite the team here. Chivo as DP. Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) as script writer. Kevin Yagher (make-up & effects guy from 80’s slasher films) as his right-hand man. You can spot the collaboration from the get-go. This is Burton moving away from his classic aesthetic. Most notably the use of digital color filtering which him, and Spielberg too for whatever reason, have become obsessed with in the latter part of their career.

Speaking of PG Cooper and 1999, that was the year in which digital coloring began to bug me. I remember, in particular, being really turned off by that Mel Gibson movie Payback. Here it’s pretty good and fitting, but generally, filmmakers tend to misuse it.

The plot’s intriguing. Johnny Depp’s Ichabod Crane is trying to pioneer forensics. Right off the bat you get commentary (and world building) on the barbarian nature of its characters.

The obligatory reference to the book/Disney version.

Movie doesn’t waste too much of our time on Ichabod the forensic officer. Those were cute scenes but Burton & Co. know people here for the gore.

I forgot to mention Ray Park plays the horseman in his headless form. I think he does more here than in Phantom Menace.

It's a fun movie.
