Third act def falters under expository dialogue, which I'm not sure was peele's idea, seemed like an added in post sorta scene with the face edited into the classroom as she was stalking the red suited version. But it didn't ruin the experience for me.
As you do start to think deeper it becomes rather silly but that's most horror movies, like comedies their third acts normally fall into tropes or predictability to a certain extent, but the previous hour and a half is awesome.
Give it a hearty 'dug it' from me.

Wow, that is absolutely not what I was expecting you to say. Care to elaborate more or did you just drop the mic and walk away?

Great movie. Still need to process it and exactly where I stand as the themes and messages are lot less clear than in Get Out, but as a piece of horror filmmaking, I found it a lot stronger.
Also fun fact: only twice in my life have I ever confronted someone in the theater for their behaviour. Tonight was the second time. Buddy in the row in front of me was visibly on his phone for long stretches of the movie. Eventually I leaned over and whispered "Get off your fucking phone". Dude responded with "Kiss my nuts" and "Are you serious?". After the movie he confronted me saying, "You'll be hearing from me". So if they find my body in a ditch, you guys know it was some douchey alphabro probably named Chad.

Wow, that is absolutely not what I was expecting you to say. Care to elaborate more or did you just drop the mic and walk away? It has no rules. Take vampires, for example. We know they can turn to animals, suck blood and turn others into vampires. In turn we know they can be defeated by sunlight, putting a stake through their heart and chopping off their head. In Us “the shadows” or “the tethered” are never established. So..... they live underground and mimic our actions? ..... okay?..... But they can also stop mimicking us, come to the surface, confront us, attack us and even kill us? And they didn’t do this for centuries? ..... why?..... Also they’re really easy to kill and the notion they would defeat us so easily and create a chain around the world is really stupid. You have to develop the characters. What can they do? What can’t they do? How can we defeat them? Horror movies work when there’s rules. Freddy Krueger can kill us in our sleep but not in reality. We can’t beat him in our sleep but we can pull him into reality and defeat him. You get what I’m saying, sir? Otherwise... it’s just random shit.

That’s why I think it would have been more effective not explaining anything rather than vaguely touching on a few things here and there. The first two acts are still really effective, I just didn’t buy everything it tried to sell us at the end.

I do wonder how they mimic some of our actions. Like what would doubles of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin do to mimic the moon landing. If someone were in the Navy, what would the double do if he were stationed extensively at sea...
Yeah, the lore of the "shadows" is dumb as fuck. But I thought some of stuff in Get Out was rather silly on a surface level as well. Ultimately it doesn't bother me as much since the origin of the doubles is fairly irrelevant as opposed to the fact that they exist in the first place in the movie. But one's reaction to what they are may definitely be the deciding factor as to whether or not the movie is any good.

Do they stop being tethered long enough to raise and eat their rabbits? If you fly from the West Coast to the East Coast does your tether go with you? Do immigrants have tethers? How do they end up fucking the right people at the right time to pass on genetic material identical to their kids above? Are they constantly walking into walls?

Are they constantly walking into walls? That's actually a mental image I had while watching the movie. Just someone leaving the country and one of the doubles constantly walking straight into a wall for days until they came back.

Saw this Saturday, and have been thinking on it since.
As of now, I like it. Don't love it. There are certainly some great scenes and direction on display in this, but I found that I appreciated the more subtle, psychological, slow-burn approach of Get Out more. Us has the same kind of creepy Twilight Zone feel that Get Out had, but it also has what amounts to slasher movie violence. And to me, that also made it feel more like a typical horror movie at the same time, rather than a more creative one like Get Out. But I can still acknowledge that the horror/terror scenes related to The Tethered are very well done and intense, and some of the imagery has really stuck with me. After only just two films, Jordan Peele has already become a director whom I'll see anything he puts out. Plus, the performances are all really strong, obviously. But, again to compare it to Get Out, some people are saying Us has more themes/subtext at play...well, maybe that's true, but I ultimately found the overall execution not quite as effective...which leads me to the Third Act.
As many have pointed out, the mythology of The Tethered really raises some big logic questions that are kind of distracting when you really think about it. But also... was it just me, or was the twist that Adelaide was really the switched-out Tethered version of herself the whole time obvious to anyone else? I normally don't try to out-think or be smarter than movies like this, but it was partly a combination of me pondering the significance of her backstory/past trauma and remembering the shot in the trailer that showed her double grabbing her by the throat. I kept wondering, "Why are they not showing that shot?" until it dawned on me about halfway through.
So that took away from the impact of the Third Act for me in a different way.
Overall, though, I would say I liked the movie...I just wish that I could have loved it more.

It certainly occurred to me pretty quickly but I also kind of moved on from the theory about half way through and forgot about it, which is probably what Peele was going for.

Like PhantomKnight, it was jarring that such a prominent part of the trailer was cut from the intro. Then in the bedroom scene, where she’s recounting the story, they cut it again. At that point it was obvious there was a twist or that Jordan Peele had pulled a Russo Bros.

I didn't even remember half the stuff in the trailers. I just had a little writer in my head tell me after the prologue "Peele perfectly set this up if he wanted to..." Then midway through it became evident that Lupita Nyong'o was the only one who could speak and the rest just kind of grunted and growled, which made me flash back to earlier in the film when her character was a child and her parents said "she doesn't speak anymore" and that's when I was 100% sure that was what happened. If I had any doubts left they were put to rest in the final fight between Lupita and herself in which "normal" Lupita started growling and howling like an animal when she killed her other self.
It was pretty interesting watching her performance regardless.

We can’t beat him in our sleep but we can pull him into reality and defeat him. You get what I’m saying, sir? Otherwise... it’s just random shit. I completely agree. Movies do need "rules", "limits" because as the audience we understand where we're operating in. The Matrix has rules, which is why when Neo begins to break these rules it's so exciting. Us is so inconsistent that it's clear Peele is just playing for the scene and not the overall movie. I mentioned in my review: Why is the son able to control his "other" and yet that never comes into play the rest of the film? Why are they suddenly able to break away from the links? Peele doesn't need to explain everything, but he has to explain something, or else it just looks like rules only apply in certain scenes and not others, which is inexcusable for a movie like this. It feels like a draft that needed someone else to look at and ask these questions, both about the rules and Peele's themes which are just as scattershot and undercooked. He went unchecked here and the result is a mixed bag that's only going to get weaker on repeat viewings. Also they missed an opportunity to kill the dad early on in my opinion. Once it's clear no one in the family is going to die, the suspense loses steam real, real fast. If they had offed him early on, it would've added a level of fear to the proceedings knowing that the physically strongest of the group is gone and now they're also outnumbered. Us is a film that plays itself safe within the confines of the genre.

To be fair they never tried to do the monkey see monkey do thing with others just the kid. And since he's a halfbreed I think it can be explained away with a deeper connection to the tethers.
I mean being held captive by an escalator is more egregious. But it's prestige horror. Of course it's gonna fall apart under scrutiny.
