DoomsdayThe movies are "inspired by" the in-universe and also officially published textbook for Hogwarts students, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The textbook was written in the series continuity by Newt Scamander, the character played by Redmayne. So when WB came to Rowling asking what else they could do with the Potter franchise, her idea was a Fantastic Beasts series following Newt and featuring his magical creature prowess...but also combining it with the story of Grindelwald's rise to power and Dumbledore's efforts to stop him, which were referenced in Deathly Hallows. The screenplays have been original works by Rowling not based on any novels or stories already published.

And they're terrible.
It's pretty telling that that anglophile Rowling decided to sink the series when she went to America. First ones actually not bad but the second is lifeless, supposedly setting up this great third act. Yates failing will be the best thing for the franchise.
