Aside from the stunning special effects, the movie itself is quite cheesy and it has a tons of plot holes. Awkward moments between the characters and one liners.
The DCU is known for having a one dimensional villains, and this movie is no exception.
But the cinematography is well shot, the design of Atlantis is quite stunning and I think Wan deserves another shot at a sequel.
Sometimes I feel like DCU wants to over complicate the story with more in depth hidden meanings and bullshit. Why??? This is the reason BvS sucked.
If they had stuck to just making an Aquaman origins story and introduced us to Atlantis alone. It would have been a much better film.
These weird storylines that don’t payoff is a hindrance to there movies.
But still I didn’t hate it, it was a decent popcorn flick with cool visuals and action set pieces.
If that is your end goal, you’ll probably enjoy it more than BvS and Justice League.
Just don't believe the weird hype this movie is getting. It's not the next Great DC film since "The Dark Knight" nor is this good as an MCU film.
It's a fun action movie, and it will be well forgotten in time.
7/10

This looks so awful on every level, it's hard for me to believe it's anything otherwise.

Looks like another in a long line of lame origin stories. No origin is ever as good as the sequels. Dc needs to just get these out of the way already.
Like original iron man is damn near unwatchable, black panther only gets a pass because of a great bad guy and interesting setting.
Sequels are where comic movies find their footing.
Looking more and more like bumblebee is the movie to beat this season.

This looks so awful on every level, it's hard for me to believe it's anything otherwise. Agreed, it looks like a total disaster that seems to be getting somewhat of a pass from critics. They showed an extended trailer before Fantastic Beasts, which was really just a long sequence of mindless action, and it was terrible.

Like original iron man is damn near unwatchable, Iron Man is leagues better than the sequels for it though.

I couldn't call Iron Man unwatchable because I've watched it many, many times.

Well he didn't list Suicide Squad, which just may be lower than zero.
I'm so sure I'm going to hate this movie that I just might give it the lowest rating I've ever given: an A-.

Don't worry, Doomsday, I feel like myself again.
In a time where most comic book movies are starting to largely feel the same, James Wan has made one that really does swing for the fences in a few ways, and the movie is all the better for it. Aquaman, to put it simply, is kinda bonkers, but in a good way. What Wan seems to have realized here is that in order to make a character like this work on the big screen, you really have to embrace the comic book movie tone. Which means there are times when this movie can go over the top, but Wan has proven himself to be such a skilled director, that he always makes sure things never get too out of control. Plus, he finds creative ways to employ some of his trademark stylistic techniques. Particularly in the action sequences. There's one set in Sicily that just put a huge grin on my face.
Much like the first Thor, Aquaman is a comic book film that feels like a sci-fi/fantasy story first, and that's another pro. It helps bring us into this world better and gives us quite a bit to marvel at visually. The special effects also look largely good, except for maybe a few instances (and Wan also often gets some gorgeous shots). But how's the story, you say? Well, it's your standard superhero plot with not very much that's new to distinguish it...but it works. Why? Well, like I already said, James Wan, but also there's the charm of the cast. Jason Momoa has such a strong surfer dude swagger that's hard not to like, Amber Heard is decent enough, Willem Dafoe fills the wisened mentor role effectively and Patrick Wilson hams it up just the right amount as the villain. Everyone seems to know exactly the type of movie they're in, and plays to that quality appropriately. They, like the script, fully embrace the adventurous tone. Oh, and I REALLY liked the musical score.
Look, Aquaman clearly isn't trying to reach the heights of some of the best that the superhero genre has to offer, but nor does it need to. It knows exactly what is and invites you to take its hand, hold your breath, dive right in and enjoy the swim. At the very least, it feels like a Marvel movie with just a tad more style direction-wise, and I appreciated that.
See it.

Plotwise, it’s reverse Thor. Instead of coming to Earth to better himself, Aquaman goes to Atlantis and the other underwater realms. But that’s what makes the movie good. Instead of cheapening itself with mundane Earth scenes, it goes for visually stunning worlds. Even though the story & characters aren’t anything special, this is the movie I would champion at the Oscars for Sets, Costumes and Visual Effects. Wakanda can go fuck itself.

It's also a reverse Black Panther. The "bastard child" who comes into the kingdom this time is the hero while the pure bred son is the villain.

Everyone go see "Into the Spider-verse" and call it a day this holiday season.
I don't see Marry Poppins, Mortal Engines, and now Aquaman really making people happy as much as that movie did.
Also I hear Bumblebee is suppose to be ridiculously entertaining so maybe it's the only other movie I'll go see.

I'm opting to see Mary Poppins over Bumblebee personally. Bumblebee might very well be the Transformers movie with the least amount of suckage, but it can't help but look like a glorified remake of the first 40 minutes of the first Transformers movie and I just can't convince myself to watch that all over again.

Had the pleasure of seeing it again in IMAX.
Visuals stood out a lot more than it did in regular theatre.
I gotta say this is easily the best looking DCU movie. Might even look visually more stunning than Avengers films.
It's bright, and looks like a painting.
If I could turn all the audio off and watch it without sound, I won't cringe as much at the dialogue.
Pitbull's cover of Toto's Africa is so bad and cringeworthly, I have no idea why any studiohead thought that was a good idea.
This movie has more explosions than a Micheal Bay Movie... that's really saying something.

I liked it. Deexan will love it, they use a sigur ros song in the first ten minutes. I very much enjoyed wan's style of action sequences. Found the first fight with the queen to be one of the best filmed fights of the year to be honest. It's got all the trademarks of an origin story though. Needless close ups, awful jokes that miss pretty hard, terrible costumes, plenty of montages and when it's the younger actor playing Arthur ho boy is he bad at acting, but overall I dug it. Patrick Wilson is a solid actor playing a semi ridiculous part but he isn't noticably bad. Certainly was pretty slow at times but again was just another in a long line of snoozy origin stories that just need to get out of the way. Imax 3d was solid. Give it a 7/10 on the lower side.

Yeah I feel like if you don’t see this in IMAX or Dolby you won’t appreciate the visuals like it was in my case.

I liked him better in Justice League. Really having people wear capes underwater is a bit much to say this is a superhero movie.

So saw this again and my rating has been lowered significantly. It's a pretty terrible movie with bad dialogue and awful delivery left and right. I'm not sure if that is the part of the writers or just the constraints of the story which is easily one of the worst origin stories across the comic world.
But the fight scenes are sincerely some of the best in recent memory. The set pieces too are just fantastic. The italy scene is great but the trench part is def some of the best comic cinema has given us in a long time.
I do think marvel needs to steal their filming style for their fight scenes to a degree, marvel has been plagued by quick cuts for a while now since it's almost always second team directors doing the work, aquaman shows what a real director can do with some larger set pieces and how to make those very compelling.
But still a rather awful origin story with easily the most absurd love story angle in a long time (queen atlan and Tom or whatever dude's name was, looked like he aged 45 years in the supposed 20 it was) and a lot of the jokes do not hit at all.
Low 6 but the saving grace is a few scenes and they are awesome.
