Ultimately if my read of the film were just about race I might agree with that. If Mortensen and Ali's characters' only base difference was skin color then I'd say "Boy this is horse shit." But while the racism portrayal was simplistic (which I mostly give a pass for being a period piece with its particular setting), I responded to the Odd Couple scenario between a slovenly bouncer/driver and an uptight musician. While Mortensen's character arc had to do with overcoming racism and was brushed through a tad too comfortably what I really found interesting was Ali's character's nature and his loneliness in being who he was. For me the friendship scenario worked not because it was a white guy and a black guy becoming friends but rather a story of a man who lived in solitary being welcomed into a family by an unlikely source. I personally related a lot to Ali's chacter's emotions and found them relevant to my own life experiences.
There are more biting takes on racism out there, but I'm not convinced this story really needed to be one. It would be asking the film to tell a different story entirely, and considering I enjoyed the story it did tell I'm more than happy to let some other movie be that movie.
Slight Edit: Personally, I have no strong emotions over whether Green Book is attacked through it's old fashioned racism approach or not. To an extent I understand it and no I don't really think it should have been nominated for Best Picture. I can name some films that were nominated that I liked less, but there are others that most likely should have been nominated instead (though I will argue that it earns its nomination more than Bohemian Rhapsody does). This is just my small stance of what I felt while watching the film through my tiny brain.
What I'm really trying to say is Green Book? More like Gr...::dodges tomatoes and runs away::
