Jude Law & Johnny Depp are awesome. The rest of the movie? Naaah. The Harry Potter series is awful. The main characters are a bunch of pussies. The story doesn’t make any sense. The so-called magic is lame. Fantastic Beasts tried to remedy that by at least being quirky & fun. It’s reminiscent of the first Harry Potter which was entertaining throughout the segments that introduced audiences to the wizarding world. Then the plot happened. That’s the issue here too in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts. It falls back into old routines. We’re thrown into the drama of Dumbledore & Grindelwald, which is actually really good, but it’s surrounded by a bunch of nonsense. The four main characters from Fantastic Beast are back: Awkward Guy, Pale Girl, Fatso and Fan Club Girl. They were charming in Fantastic Beast but there’s no reason whatsoever for them to be in this movie. It’s like if you took R2D2 & C-3PO and made them the focus of Star Wars. It’s like, motherfuckers, get out of my Dumbledore/Grindelwald movie. This could have been a tightly paced drama fueled fantasy film. Instead you’re gonna be staring at your watch and wondering when this shit gonna be over.

This might be my least favorite in the entire "Wizarding World" series. That may seem extreme and a great many will probably disagree with that sentiment (especially compared to the first two Harry Potter films). While I don't care for a few of the other HP movies, it's usually because they were sometimes too corny and/or dumb for my tastes. However there's one thing that they didn't do, and that was to bore me. I feel like that's even worse. I was just continually getting very bored by this film. The plot holes definitely don't help either, but it's hard to say whether or not the future movies will be able to fill all that in.
And this is just one big problem I've continued to state about prequel series like this. It weirds me out that events so big and significant such as these can occur and yet no one spoke of it in the original series. I guess that's one of the plot holes. I suppose being magic and all, they could explain it away like everyone of importance in the events had their memories erased or swore some crazy blood oaths to never speak of it again..... *shrugs* meh.

Well, I never thought I'd see that much infanticide in a Harry Potter movie. Granted the whole thing started with failed infanticide, but I didn't think Rowling was going to celebrate ten movies by killing every baby in her way.
Half of it was fun, the other half was bland. Yeah, I'd agree this is definitely the weakest yet, though I'd revisit it for the moments I adored. But really, the storytelling is a master class clusterfuck of neat ideas that just don't seem to go together.
For the life of me I still don't understand why Newt Scamander is the protagonist. I mean, I like Newt just fine. I also like Tina. I like Jacob. I tolerate Queenie (and her storyline here makes zero sense...she wants to marry a Muggle by siding with someone who wants to kill all Muggles?). Why are they the ones to help counter Grindelwald? The fuck if I know. Every time it switches between Grindelwald doing evil stuff to Newt rolling about like a jackass trying to charm a creature it just feels weird.

Someone needs to do a fan cut that’s just the Dumbledore/Grindelwald scenes. Kinda like the Phantom Menace fan cut that eliminates Jar Jar Binks.

Oh my Gosh this movie. I have enjoyed every Harry Potter movie. Even the least favorite "Chamber of Secrets" I even enjoyed the last "Fantastic Beasts" Redman as Newt was a fun character and I loved how they showed America Wizarding World. Jude Law as Dumbledore is a revelation. Johnny Depp had a great opening and they had a good setup for him. Okay that's all the nice things I can say... THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING BORING!!! So much plot twists and turns, and characters who are boring doing things we don't care about. Nor do they explain anything. Like what the Hell was JK Rowling thinking??? So much potential lost.... I hope if they make a sequel. Lets focus on Jude Law and Johnny Depp. With Newt mostly in the background. This is the first movie in the Potter Universe that I truly didn't enjoy 5/10

I feel like looking back on this movie it will serve to be pretty important J.K.’ Writing is slower paced, gradually giving clues. Honestly, books 3-7 could have been two movies. So I think when everything is all said and done we’ll see this movie as a turning point in this franchise, but as for this movie right now, it didn’t really serve too much of a purpose.

I kinda feel like Joey from the Friends episode where Rachel made that trifle.
Me: I like it!
Most critics: Are you kidding?
Me: Sure, what's not to like? Magic? Good! The same likable characters from the first movie? Good! An intriguing and exciting plot? GOOOOOD!
I can already hear the eye-rolling.
But seriously...I also kind of get the response. It's a DENSE movie, but I think that was pretty much necessary given the fact that this basically has to set up and set in motion all the plot material that'll carry us through the next three movies. A lot of people have said they were either bored or confused by this movie, but that just wasn't the case for me. There IS a lot going on in this movie, but where it counts, it was always engaging me. I especially got into it cause it felt basically like an unofficial Aurors movie in many respects, and I've been wanting that for years. So it was already pushing a lot of the right buttons for me personally. But beyond that, seeing the adventures of Newt, Jacob (who still remains my personal favorite here), Tina and Queenie continue provided a lot of entertainment value for me. This group is certainly no Harry, Ron and Hermione, but they're still likable and engaging enough in their own right. And I'm also genuinely invested in Credence's storyline, so seeing that mystery of his identity keep unfurling added another layer of intrigue. Are there maybe too many side characters introduced here? Sure, but it felt to me that they were all integral to the plot at least in some form.
This movie's plot also ups the ante in terms of the stakes and danger, because the threat of Grindelwald is more immediate here than it was in the previous film. We do get a sense of the danger he poses, in more ways than one and the bits of backstory between him and Dumbledore that we get are legitimately interesting. Speaking of...Jude Law is great as Dumbledore and I wish he was in more of the movie. Again, under David Yates' direction, yeah, all of the more magic-heavy elements are really cool and all, but it's the character-driven moments that shine equally as bright. He knows how to balance the incredible with the intimate, and that carries on here. And the way this movie ends...I'm already looking forward to the third.
So you can call me an apologist or whatever; I don't care. I just know that I really enjoyed this movie.
