1. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg: Wonderful. A beautifully shot movie with great energy, great music, and an involving story. It's a film that does a great job showing the joy of young romance along with the more realistic melancholy which emerges as real life takes over. A
2. Family Plot: A whimper from Hitchcock. Not exactly a bad film, but it isn't very cinematic. Watchable, but it's clear Hitchcock was done by this point. C-
3. Freaks: The actual plot is a bit conventional, but film itself is highly interesting and bizarrely progressive in its own little way. The fact that the titular "freaks" are treated as actual characters with feelings and not just props stands out. Also, the last ten minutes or so when the film delves full on into horror are pretty awesome. B+
New set:
1. A Fistful of Dollars
2. Sexy Beast
3. Saturday Night Fever

Cheeky thread hijack...I'd like to see if anyone saw Place Beyond the Pines?
Triple AAA trailer and dialogue:
"If you ride like lightning, you're gonna crash like thunder."
Pretty sick...

A Fistful of Dollars: Cool movie but probably my least favorite of the Man With No Name Trilogy. 3.5/5 Sexy Beast: Its been a very long time since I saw it, I think I mostly just dismissed it as a Tarantino ripoff when I did, but that might not have been entirely fair. /5 Saturday Night Fever: Darker and more respectable than it's reputation. When I saw it a few years ago I still kept it a bit at a distance but I have been meaning to rewatch it, in part because my opinion of disco as a genre has increased immensely in the last couple of years. Certainly a million times better than Grease. 3.5/5 A Place Beyond the Pines: themovievampire.wordpress.com/2013/05/12/the-place-beyond-the-pines4282013/4/5 Winner of the Golden Stake for Best Chase that year

Hey PG, mind if I throw a few films out? Sure. I'll just throw up my thoughts for the last set. 1. A Fistful of Dollars: The fact that this is basically a shot for shot remake of Yojimbo makes this hard to totally embrace, but it's also a blast to watch and brought Eastwood, Leone, and Morricone to the foreground in a big way. B+2. Sexy Beast: Kind of a generic gangster film, but Mark Glazer's weird touches do elevate things and Ben Kingsley is a hoot. C+3. Saturday Night Fever: Way more interesting than I expected and Travolta is very good, but I also think it's pretty messy. C+

I saw fistful of dollars first, so I didnt have the same reservations about it.
Okay here's some I'm curious of people's thoughts for: 1. Star Trek into darkness 2. American History x 3. Gone Girl

1. Star Trek Into Darkness: A very misguided script which does not really seem to understand Star Trek hurts this a lot. From the film's weak depiction of Khan (and the secrecy behind his identity) to the Kirk death scene, to the violence, to the general excessive referencing, there is a lot of questionable stuff. That said, Abrams' direction is really polished. He crafts some effective scenes, the action and effects work, and I really like the cast. I'm torn, but looked in isolation just as a modern blockbuster and I think it's okay. C+
2. American History X: It's been a long time and my feelings are really mixed. On the one hand, Edward Norton is awesome here and I think in its best moments the movie works very well. On the other hand, the film's more hateful moments actually resonate more than Derek's redemption which is...troubling. I'll probably be revisiting this at some point so I'll refrain from giving a score for now. If nothing else, I will say the film is interesting and I do respect it for boldly tackling some important issues.
3. Gone Girl: I love it. The film's musings on marriage aren't totally convincing to me (though I love the basic question of how much do you really know someone) and there are some really glaring plotholes (problematic in a story which depends so much on having a tight narrative) but god damn do I love the way Fincher puts a movie together. An engrossing film to watch with lots of great small touches from Fincher, an engaging story, and a solid cast. A

1. Star Trek Into Darkness - Not bad, but it's not really Star Trek. Rating: C
2. American History X - I haven't seen it in awhile but I thought it was all right. Rating: C
3. Gone Girl - Thought it was great. Fincher is a master at suspense and storytelling. Rating: A-

Star Trek Into Darkness: It's a harmless movie and a lot of non-fans find it enjoyable. I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan in the world but I do highly respect it and can see why people despise these new films.
American History X: I haven't watched it since high school but I remember really enjoying it.
Gone Girl: Rosamund Pike is fantastic and delivers a top-tier villainess performance. Ben Affleck ain't half bad either. A

Star Trek Into Darkness: Dated allegory, predictable twist, ending where they find a cure for death, some alright action sequences. ** out of five
American History X: Been a really long time since I've seen it. Great Edward Norton performance, mediocre movie in many ways. ***1/2 out of five
Gone Girl: Very well told if somewhat nutty yarn. ****1/2 out of five

Stand By Me - Eh, didn't care for it. It's been a few years since I've seen it, but I remember not really being drawn in by the characters nor the story, nor did I find the boys all that likable. **/****
Videodrome - Haven't seen it.
Superman - A very strong movie. I don't care much for Superman as a character in general, but this movie has undeniable charm and is made with skill. I also really enjoy Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. ***1/2 /****

Stand By Me: It's pretty good I guess. It's an almost word for word adaptation of the Stephen King story sometimes to a fault. 50s/early 60s nostalgia tends to be the most obnoxious nostalgia and the "suburban kids og on an adventure/rite of passage" genre has never been my thing so there's only so far I can go with it. *** out of Five
Videodrome: I've seen it probably at least three times at this point and I still barely get it, but it's pretty cool and feels like a strong if not terribly clear statement of purpose from Cronenberg. **** out of five
Superman: It gets props for doing something that hadn't really been done before and doing it fairly well... but I don't really think it holds up. The Smallville stuff is pretty good but the Kyrpton stuff goes on too long and the main meat of the movie in Metropolis is just... kind of cheesy. Luthor never really feels like much of a threat and that ending with the world spinning in reverse is kind of unforgivably stupid. If this movie were made in today's culture that ending would be as meme-ified and insulted as "Emo Peter Parker" and "Our mothers have the same name."

Stand by Me - Solid performances from its young cast, namely River Phoenix, make this breezy coming-of-age story a delightful insight into mortality and how we drift apart as we get older. Plus the train sequence is very memorable. 7/10
Videodrome - Possibly Cronenberg's best film, it's wildly original and creative and its commentary on viewership and delving too deep into dark content resonates just as strongly today. 8/10
Superman - Doesn't have much to offer in terms of providing Superman with a worthy villain adversary (though Gene Hackman is fun as Lex Luthor) but excels at superb production value, a sharp script, a memorable score, strong effects work, and enjoyable performances from its cast. Plus you get Marlon Brando in a superhero film. Far and away the best of any Superman film we've gotten. 8/10

Let's stop giving Gene Hackman so much shit. 40 years later and he's still the best cinematic Lex Luther.
Overall though, John Shea is #1.

He's good in the movies, he just doesn't get much to do other than chew scenery. Plus his plans are always absurd. His only good plan is in Superman II where he tries to team up with the other villains.

If Lex Luthor existed in Trump's America, you'd be in the ocean right now. Obama would've spun the world backwards before it happened. Obama drowned back at his lair. California is doomed. Well, the good parts at least. All that new real estate will be yuge.
