Of those I've only seen Some Like it Hot, and it's a fantastic movie. Witty, way ahead of its time, and absolutely holds up today. Billy Wilder made some great movies, and that is absolutely one of them. 9/10, maybe a 10 but I'll go with 9.

1. They Live - Awesome movie. Hilarious fight scene between Roddy Piper and Keith David.
2. Some Like It Hot - A classic.
3. Bullitt - I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember loving it.

1. They Live - Awesome movie. Hilarious fight scene between Roddy Piper and Keith David. 2. Some Like It Hot - A classic. 3. Bullitt - I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember loving it. I probably should re-watch Bullit as well. About a year ago, I re-watched Dirty Harry and The French Connection and my opinion of them changed tremendously. Time has been kinder to Dirty Harry. Clint Eastwood gets shit for being Republican, but his characters are too complex to be labeled. Gene Hackman's Popeye Doyle, on the other hand, is seen as the more "liberal friendly" character, but he fits the stereotype of the right-wing police nut a lot better. Dirty Harry and his crusade for the victim's rights gave him justification for a lot of the shit he did - the way it does for Batman and similar current day screen heroes. Popeye Doyle just seemed like a lunatic. So it would be interesting to watch Bullit again since it's the prototype for both movies.

The difference is that Dirty Harry glamorizes its hero and clearly sides with his fascist tendencies. Popeye Doyle, by contrast, is an I likable anti-hero and the film looks at his actions with ambivalence. Bullitt is more of a conventional hero.

DraculaDirty Harry wasn't glamorized. It was just brutally honest. There's a difference. Popeye Doyle, on the other hand, took a real life story and sensationalized it.

1. They Live: Fun movie. I like Piper in the lead and I'm always happy for some Keith David. I don't necessarily think the satire is all that sharp, but it is creative and fun. B
2. Some Like It Hot: Wilder certainly made better films, but this is probably his funniest. Jack Lemmon is awesome. A-
3. Bullitt: Cool action movie with a rightfully iconic chase sequence and some other fun set-pieces. Steve McQueen is awesome here. B+
New set:
1. Dog Day Afternoon
2. THX 1138:
3. My Man Godfrey

2. THX - 1138 - This is another one that I haven't seen in ages. I remember liking it though.
3. My Man Godfrey - Haven't seen.

Dog Day Afternoon: Pretty damn good... kind of a hard movie to find things to say about actually, just good high quality 70s cinema.
THX 1138: Interesting movie but not terribly entertaining. A peak at the more experimental career that Lucas might have had if he hadn't stumbled his way into hgihly commercial film making.
My Man Godfrey: Been forever since I've seen it, it kind of blends with other screwball comedies in my memory.

They Live - good premise, but that terrible fight scene killed the movie for me.
Some Like It Hot - funny
Bullet - I honestly dont remember much about it. I guess that maybe says something?
Dog Day Afternoon - awesome movie, great balance of drama and humour
THX 1138 - I honestly didn't care for it. It was like 1984, brave new world, or any other dystopian world without much of a flavour.
My Man Godfry - ??

1. Dog Day Afternoon: Great film, one of Lumet's best. I love the energy, the sense of place, the realism, and performances. Pacino is great of course, but the entire cast is really something. A+
2. THX 1138: You can tell this was a film a college student came up with. There are some neat ideas, but they're pretty half baked and while the visuals are cool, the film relies on them for too long to the point that they too start to become stale. C
3. My Man Godfrey: Maybe my favourite screwball comedy. I laughed a lot and I feel like I'd only like it more on a rewatch. A-

And yeah, to everyone who either hasn't seen My Man Godfrey or don't really remember it, I recommend giving it a look. The film is a blast.

I watched it in a film class 11 years ago, I don't remember anything about it but I know it's a classic screwball comedy. One of these days I'll revisit it...one of these days...

Gojira - It's fun when Godzilla is onscreen and pretty boring and uninspired when he isn't. I wanted to like it more, but save for the three sequences with Godzilla, it's just not very enjoyable. The subplots are bland and the bigger ideas of nuclear power and waste aren't touched upon in depth. 6/10
Repo Man - Such a weird but enjoyable film. It's a fun ride, and it's one I should revisit because it's been awhile. 8/10
Friday the 13th - I enjoy these movies for what they are, and other than Part VI (yes I'm being serious) this is probably the best of the series. A low-rent Halloween to be sure, but has its moments. Plus the end scene is a good jump scare. 6/10

Godzilla: It's a B-disaster movie at its heart, but a good one. The nuclear allegory is there and it does elevate the movie a little, but not to the point that some people think it does. ***1/2 out of five
Repo Man: Weird movie. Not sure what it all means... in fact I'm pretty sure it means nothing... but it has an energy to it and it's a pretty fun cult movie. *** out of five
Friday the 13th: Schlock garbage. People will reflexively tell you it's better than the rest and that the series got worse as it went but don't listen to them. The sequels were at least fun and had an iconic villain at their center, the Jason free original is just a cheap and poorly made slasher film that pales in comparison to Halloween and Friday the 13th. * out of five

1. Godzilla: Great set-pieces and I love the dark and serious tone. A-
2. Repo Man: It's like punk rock. It isn't always technically good, but there's a raw energy and charm to the whole thing. B-
3. Friday the 13th: Thank god for some fun Tom Savini make-up and Betsy Palmer's fun screen chewing. The movie is pretty bad, but these two elements to liven things up slightly. D+

I really like Godzilla. Not as much as King Kong, its still a little... I dunno what, but a little something. But way better than I expected.
Friday the 13th is pretty lame. I liked the first person view of the killer, but that's really the only strength in that film.

Godzilla - It's definitely pretty heavy-handed and didactic. Still a decent film though.
Repo Man - Really like this one. Entertaining as hell.
Friday the 13th - Meh, I didn't get much out of it.

New set: 1. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg2. Family Plot3. Freaks (1932)Umbrellas of Cherbourg: A little too cute for my tastes, but obviously a classic. Freaks: Weird pop culture artifact more than a truly great film, but it's certainly interesting kitch and it gets good in the last ten minutes or so.
