The infamous rape scene.
I remember Roger Ebert complaining that the movie “didn’t do enough.” I don’t know, man. Rape is... pretty bad. What you want the guy to do, rob a bank? Even if he killed someone... death is death. Imagine the movie from the woman’s point of view. She got raped by nothing. This woman’s sanity has been ruined for life. I think Verhoeven took the Invisible Man premise to its extreme.

Alright. So you have your three main characters. Johnny Rico is the jock so he’s perfect as the group soldier. Denise Richards has the enthusiasm but lacks the stomach, so she’s the pilot. And Doogie Howser is the brains. He’s the guy running the operations. It’s funny how they took high school cliches and applied them to the military.

The big debate about Starship Troopers is whether it’s a smart or dumb action movie. It’s both. The movie has a lot of great commentary but it also gets caught up in the story and becomes the very thing it’s satirizing. I’m sure PG Cooper will delve deeper in his video essay. |
