Is that Austin Powers? I'll give you Amour, but not The Master. No one cares about that movie. On the topic of Haneke, why not The White Ribbon for 2009? Or Cache for 2005? Both years seem kind of lacking. Don't get ahead of yourself.

Just saying if were wondering if we should add certain films because their director might not get their films in, we should consider those two (specifically Cache). And yes, that's from the new Austin Powers.

Why would we put in The Master when only two people voted for it, versus the four who voted for The Dark Knight Rises?

The Kid: Chaplin's first feature. A classic that combined slapstick comedy with melodrama in a bold way. The Phantom Carriage: A Swedish classic that introduced some innovative effects to put ghosts on the screen. Orphans of the Storm: A D.W. Griffith film that brought the French Revolution to the screen. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: Very popular WWI epic that would become one of the highest grossing films of the silent era. The Shiek: The film that made Rudolph Valentino a star and one of cinema's first sex symbols.

The 400 Blows: Major French New Wave movie. Anatomy of a Murder: One of a handful of Otto Preminger that broke censorship barriers and helped mature Hollywood cinema Hiroshima Mon Amour: Movie that caused a major stir at Cannes and became a classic of world cinema. Some Like It Hot: The movie that proved to the world that dudes dressed like women can be funny. Breathless: Entire books have probably been written about how important this movie is.

Sleeping Beauty: The most cinematic of all the Disney films. Was the first animated movie to be filmed in Super Technirama 70 widescreen. I saw it in 70mm and it still holds up today as one of the most gorgeous animated films ever made. Ben-Hur: The most popular of the Biblical epics. The 400 Blows: No doubt was an inspiration to a generation of many filmmakers. One of the most important French new wave films.
Breathless is 1960.

Hmmm... alright so in its place I think I'll go the other direction and nominate the ultimate "so bad it's good" movie: Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I'm going to have to go with Drac's. Each one of those movies is hugely important. Even Plan 9--which was excluded from his list--is important in being profoundly bad, yet undeniably earnest.

You CANNOT have Plan 9 over Ben-Hur on this list. Especially when you guys excluded Batman & Robin even though many people had it on their 1997 list. So fuck you with a giant middle finger. No Batman & Robin. No Plan 9. Case Closed. Ben-Hur it is. Next year, Ian.
