Still, how is it really important? It's just the last film of a popular franchise. It didn't really add anything to the genre (not even close to what The Avengers did).

I'm not really feeling The Dark Knight Rises for the list either. Much as I defended that movie it didn't really fundamentally do anything the previous two films didn't and since those are more than likely to be on the list in 2005 and 2008.

It's less about about the genre and more about it's director. Before that movie Nolan was an unchallenged genius. Now suddenly he's a hack. It's a pivotal moment in a modern director's career.
I'd argue Hunger Games isn't really revolutionary for its genre but it clearly had some societal influence outside of the west.

Oh, Nolan had his detractors before TDKR, I know because I argued with them endlessly.

I'm talking in broader circles.
It doesn't have to stay. I'd rather Dark Knight be recognized, if I have to choose, but in a two year window, those are my reasons. .

Dark Knight Rises is not important. I still don't really understand why The Dark Knight Rises is on the list. It's easily considered the worst of the three films. It's the only superhero franchise to actually give itself and its character a proper ending, and in an era where everything is about building a universe and pumping up the next film, that is very admirable and unique. It also plays against the genre as it feels like more of a war epic than a straight-up superhero film and it definitely raised the bar for grand set-pieces and scope in the series. It's still one of the most fiercely debated films on both the internet and in general conversation. I can't think of another film that has stirred up more passionate argument in recent memory both leading up to its release and after. And while it may be considered the weakest of the trilogy by some (myself included), there are those who not only argue it to be the best of the trilogy, but one of the best films of the year and a defining film of the genre. Regardless of whether or not you agree with these statements, they have been made by others, including respected film critics, and people still debate the validity of them. Bottom line is people still talk about the film a lot more than they do many of 2012's other releases.

Okay, people are mentioning the Hunger Games, good. That one seems like a clear pick to me.

My definition of importance differs I guess. Silver Linings Playbook, because it showed Jennifer Lawrence pelvic thrusting. That's very important to me. It was something that was missing in The Hunger Games, so it wins my vote over that.
Dredd, because it was gory, and we need more "big" budget Rated-R science fiction.
Django Unchained, because it pissed off Spike Lee.
Argo, because Ben Affleck's beard.
Avengers, because of its take on race issues; acceptance and coming together. Whether you be white, black, or green.

Dredd, because it was gory, and we need more "big" budget Rated-R science fiction. If we must include a graphically violent movie about a law enforcement officer fighting through a housing project controlled by gang members it should be The Raid, not Dredd.

There is no way in hell Dredd or The Raid are more important than The Dark Knight Rises. And I don't really see The Master as being particularly important, which pains me to say because it's my favourite film from that year, but most people either didn't like it or didn't care. It might become a major influence on future filmmakers, but we have no way of knowing that yet.

I'll have to second Paranormal Activity 4. I'm not sure where we would be as a civilization without it.

Avengers and Hunger Games are clearly in. Zero Dark Thirty seems to be the next popular choice. What about the other two people?

On the topic of Haneke, why not The White Ribbon for 2009? Or Cache for 2005? Both years seem kind of lacking.
