Here we go again....
1. The Avengers: Current peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first time a group of characters from separate films came together.
2. The Dark Knight Rises: An epic ending to one of the most important film series in recent memory. It's also very different from a majority of superhero films.
3. Zero Dark Thirty: Tackles one of the most important aspects of American history in the 21st century and will likely be further celebrated in years removed from the shock of the torture elements.
4. Django Unchained: For better or for worse, this is one of Tarantino's most popular and well-loved films.
5. Silver Linings Playbook: Captures yet modifies the "manic pixie dream girl" trope, reflects more contemporary views of mental health, and is the peak of David O. Russell's resurgence.
Honourable Mentions:
The Master: Brilliant film. In ten years I might rank this as one of the most important films of the year, but the audience hasn't really built yet and I'm not sure if it will.
Skyfall: This felt like a big deal at the time, but looking back it does rip-off Nolan's Batman films pretty clearly and it doesn't solve the series' identity crisis either. Great cinematography though.
Moonrise Kingdom: I love it, but this seems to be dismissed as nothing more than typical Wes Anderson.
Prometheus: I'm very fond of this film, but it isn't really important.

The Avengers - The ability to get all of these huge actors together in a film is one thing, but it's another feat for the movie to actually be as good as it is. Much Ado About Nothing - I know this is an unconventional choice, but I think it pairs nicely with Avengers in that it's an important film that highlights the two extremes on the film spectrum that certain modern directors have the ability to create. Whedon went from creating one of the biggest movies ever to making a film in his house with his friends for next to nothing. Post Tenebras Lux - Carlos Reygadas' masterpiece is one of the pinnacles of Mexican cinema in the past decade (in my opinion, and you'll find a lot of varying ones). Channels the work of Terrenace Malick in ways that few filmmakers can.

Les Mis: the return if the big budget musical. See Into the Woods.
Avengers: The grand plan worked! Now we have the Big Two are trying to one up each other and we have release dates into the next decade.
The Dark Knight: Polarized the Nolan argument and completed one of the most successful trilogies of the this generation.
Looper? Django? Silver Lining? Cabin in the Woods? Lincoln? Etc....

Fantasia: Probably my favorite of the early Disney movies. The studio's animation is a lot more enjoyable when divorced from juvenile stories and simply set to classical music. Didn't I give you this in the film club once? Didn't you not like it?

Are we seriously doing this?
Look.
This is a no-brainer.
THE AVENGERS - Don't even bother to debate this.
THE HUNGER GAMES - Do you guys watch the news? Have you heard, or even read, of what happened in Asia with people using the finger-salute-thing to protest for better human rights issues. And then Mockingjay getting banned from, like, Thailand because of this social unrest.
ZERO DARK THIRTY - I can almost guarantee this will become required High School viewing.
MOONRISE KINGDOM - Trust me on this one. The teens have embraced it. It's all over social media.
As for a 5th...
I don't know.
Dark Knight Rises is not important. Skyfall is not important. Django Unchained is not important in a world with Blazing Saddles. Silver Linings Playbook? It's a great movie, but the hype went away. Lincoln? Eh. Wreck-It Ralph? Maybe. Brave? Eh. TED?! Eh.
I don't think a 5th movie exists yet. It has only been two years.

I don't see the significance of Zero Dark Thirty. I took it as just another action thiller with Hollywood fluff.

No it isn't, there is the awful Seal Team Six movie. I don't think that alone makes it an important movie of 2012.

There were some select theaters that played it, I know the one by my old apartment did. Still it doesn't hold up as an important movie in my book.

No one liked Argo, I see.
Silver Linings Playbook was my favorite movie of 2012.
Eh, since I've started, I'll make those two, plus Avengers, Dredd and Django Unchained as my picks.

I would like to add Argo to my list and I just saw Silver Linings Playbook, can't really see how it's an important movie of 2012. I really enjoyed it though.

Kind of a pointless year (for this thread) but I'll go with:
The Avengers The Dark Knight Rises Silver Linings Playbook Zero Dark Thirty and, grudgingly, The Hunger Games

Fantasia: Probably my favorite of the early Disney movies. The studio's animation is a lot more enjoyable when divorced from juvenile stories and simply set to classical music. Didn't I give you this in the film club once? Didn't you not like it? No, I saw it when I was a kid I wouldn't have watched it for the film club. As for 2012... are we really doing this? The Avengers: Led studios to try to make "shared universes" for every damn franchise under the sun. The Cabin in the Woods: I think its over-rated, but it seems to have become a very popular cult film. The Huger Games: There must be some reason why Divergent and The Maze Runner got made. Amour: Because you guys refused to put Funny Games through in 1997 and this is probably the only other chance for Michael Haneke to get through. The Master: Just call it a hunch, it's going to inspire a lot of filmmakers.

I'll swap out Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained for The Hunger Games (which I genuinely meant to put) and Amour as our Haneke representation. Making my list:
1. The Avengers 2. The Dark Knight Rises 3. The Hunger Games 4. Zero Dark Thirty 5. Amour

I still don't really understand why The Dark Knight Rises is on the list. It's easily considered the worst of the three films.
I'll add to my list:
The Avengers Much Ado About Nothing Post Tenebras Lux Cabin in the Woods The Hunger Games
