so if Dracula & PG Cooper feel the need to fight for Social Network cause of “muh Dave Fincher”, don’t worry my dudes, you got Gone Girl. I don't think we're going to have to fight all that hard.

I don't think we're going to have to fight all that hard. I propose this. Replace Social Network with Shutter Island. A lot of the artsy fartsy A24 horror films we’ve gotten can be traced back to Shutter Island. Or even Black Swan. Or both.

PG Cooper, as a Zoomer, how do you feel about Easy A? It’s an anti-bullying/anti-slut shaming movie. I feel like those are themes that resonate with your generation. Especially in the age of social media.

Well, someone missed the point of the Social Network.
It HAS just been named the top movie of the last decade.

We should re-evaluate Social Network. Facebook is a completely different company 10 years later. The fact the movie centers around IP theft seems so inconsequential now. The story of Facebook is the story of Russian trolls and Donald Trump and anti-maskers. There’s a much better Facebook movie waiting to be made (hopefully by Doomsday & SnoBorderZero) that will make David Fincher’s version seem like Pirates of Silicon Valley, the TNT made for TV movie about Steve Jobs & Bill Gates. The defining David Fincher movie of the 2010’s is gonna be Gone Girl, not Social Network, so if Dracula & PG Cooper feel the need to fight for Social Network cause of “muh Dave Fincher”, don’t worry my dudes, you got Gone Girl. The Social Network is widely regarded as one of the best movies of the decade and among David Fincher's best (and it's definitely his best film from the decade). It belongs. You've made this argument before and I don't find it convincing. Even if the film couldn't have predicated where Facebook was going to go, that's not what the movie is about. It's a drama that doesn't rely on an understanding of the real Zuckerberg or Facebook, just like Citizen Kane doesn't require a knowledge of who William Randolph Hearst is. Furthermore, there's something incredibly salient about one of the decade's defining films being about an insecure and misogynistic nerd who alienates everyone in his life while smugly believing in his own superiority in the same decade that's given us shit like Gamergate.

Well, someone missed the point of the Social Network. I know the point is that Mark Zuckerberg is an asshole and he started Facebook to spite a girl. But like I said, Zuckerberg is so much more than that now. History is not gonna remember him under the context in which the movie presented him. Let me put it another way. Imagine if they had made a movie about Elon Musk when he was the PayPal guy.

Helped make Emma Stone a star and definitely has a fanbase, but I don't know, I don't see it being a touchstone to the degree that something like Mean Girls was.

It’s ultimately a work of fiction. 2) I can see Social Network being an allegory for Gamegate but that’s also a subject matter that can be tackled more poignantly by other movies.

I see where you’re coming from with Mean Girls, but I think the slut-shaming angle gives it some poignancy. Girls weren’t really “slut shamed” in my youth. Guys would never complain about a girl being slutty and most girls wouldn’t have the guts to confront someone face to face. Social media and online bullying gave rise to slut shaming. I think this movie, especially since it’s made for teenagers, can be very meaningful to people.

Social Network is about Zuckerberg, but it grows far beyond a simple biopic of the guy. Its really about the new generation coming into their own, about he changing way we view our own relationship, about toxic motivations, etc etc etc.

Isn't the point of that movie that "slut shaming" is a "tradition" that goes back to at least the 17th Century?

I’m submitting Alice in Wonderland Black Swan Catfish Easy A Inception Catfish did invent a new term, but it's such a basic ass movie. Anyone who needed to be told that people on the internet might be lying about who they are in 2010 needs their fucking head examined.

The elevator selfie from Nev is enough to disqualify Catfish.

But is there another movie that tackles that subject matter? The anime Perfect Blue from 1997 is the best film about online identities and how they can warp our lives.

Yeah I'm not sure how that even made it in the first place. — — — — The Fighter: Alright, I got that this isn't anything special cinematically, but the huge comeback this was for David O. Russell. It was a huge hit critically and financially, and O. Russell's follow-ups have been even better and more successful. I also think Russell is an important filmmaker and this is the best chance he has of making the list. The Fighter (Meh, wouldn't pick it in a stronger year but it did seem like something of a big boost to a number of the people involved) Well, Fighter is coming up alot. I don't agree, but in this year I guess so.
