I'll be the first to point out that Netflix is really a lackluster streaming service nowadays. Yes it's the main name in the game but of all the streaming services I subscribe to (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and HBO) it's maybe my least fav. Or to put it differently, it's the least watched. Well, I don't know about that. I currently have Netflix, Amazon, and essentially have HBO since I get it through cable. HBO is basically worthless as a movie provider IMO because half of their movies are in the wrong aspect ratio. They are damn lucky I can't live without Game of Thrones. I like that Amazon offers an ala carte option for a lot of stuff that isn't available elsewhere but I don't need Prime for that and they have very little in the way of original programming I can't live without, also their selection is a real pain in the ass to browse compared with Netflix and I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription once my year is up. As such Netflix basically seems like the gold standard to me for what it's worth, their interface is clearly the best and they have a ridiculous amount of original programming, but without discs to supplement it it would be a pretty lackluster means of getting movies as well.

Netflix's movie selection gets shittier everyday, but that's by choice. They're focusing more and more on original programming.
Truth is, in a decade or so, each studio will have its own streaming service. HBO is owned by Warner Bros. Hulu is a joint venture between Universal, Fox and Disney. Epix is a joint venture between Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate. Netflix has no choice but be independent. Sooner or later, studios will stop giving them content.
And if you don't wanna pay for a bunch of streaming sites, Amazon and Vudu are rental services. As physical media disappears, these two sites will become more important. Especially since they also let you buy movies and TV shows.

I kine of like rental services like that existing when there's a title that isn't available anywhere else, but it's definitely not a cost effective replacement for subscription services. Like, last month I watched 16 movies (not including theatrical views and stuff that was in by blu-ray collection), had I been paying $4 a pop to watch each one individually this would have cost me $64 vs. the $30 a month I pay for my "Netflix streaming plus three discs at a time" plan.

I still do 2 discs and streaming with Netflix, as Dracula said the majority of films I watch are through disc because streaming is so limited and selective. If I had to choose, I'd ditch the streaming before the discs for sure.

I completely agree. Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime are cheaper in the long run. I'm talking about the future. Within 10 years, I can see Netflix becoming a full-fledged studio/network and Amazon evolving into a digital Blockbuster. Once physical media dies, and it will, Netflix won't be that useful to you and SnoBorderZero . Amazon and Vudu will become the heavyweights.

Holy Schnikes! I just checked out my Netflix queue. What used to be a list of about 200 movies and 50 TV series waiting to be viewed is now three movies and five TV series. Everything else is just GONE.

Waitasec, Dracula still does the Netflix disc option? Honestly I forgot they even still offered that. Frankly I don't know how any true film buff can manage to live without it. By being Canadian and not having a choice.

Quite a lot of it is really gone, though. More than enough is left to keep me occupied for the forseeable future, nevertheless.

Doomsday DraculaDirect TV Now will launch next month. 100 channels for $35 a month. It uses AT&T's 5G Network. Not sure if that's better or worse than U-Verse.

Has anyone tried Shudder, a horror based streaming service?

Netflix is now accessible through Comcast cable boxes. It's a little slow to load, but once the movies start playing it's pretty much seamless. Will probably extend the life of my ps4 by a couple of years and will mean I need to switch around inputs about half as much.

Netflix got rid of star ratings. It's now Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down. Last thing I rated was Five Came Back. First thing? Probably the Swedish Girl With The Dragon Tattoo back in 2010 or maybe the French Nikita since I watched that before the TV show premiered. 7 years of ratings gone forever.

It's still stars for me. I don't really care either way. Never used Netflix as my reference for ratings.
Now if it would actually show me what the user feedback is, not what it thinks I would rate it. From the look of things, it's still going to operate the same way and tell me that I'll probably give something a thumbs up or a thumbs down. I'd rather just have an average scale, like YouTube.

They probably got angry that Amy Schumer's standup special was 1-starred.

I've had Hulu for a long time now and one joke I always made about it was that it had seemingly dozens of original shows that I had never, ever heard of nor did I know of anyone who had ever watched any. Hulu would constantly send me emails saying what new shows were premiering or were renewed, none of which I had any care or interest in or knowledge about. Netflix was the real deal.
Now it seems that Netflix has crossed into Hulu territory. So many shows that look uninteresting and unappealing and there seems to be more and more and more of them. All the while their movie selection gets shittier.
To Hulu's credit, they're picking up the movie slack and have added a ton of good movies in recent months. They used to be a 1/10 on the movie selection but they're doing a much better job recently.
