The list is made, I'll get to the list but first an explanation. I took all the top ten lists and gave points for each movie on each list. Putting a movie at # one on a list gave it ten points, #2 gave it 9 points and so on down to #10 which gives it a mere one. The more points the higher on the big list.
so with out further ado here's the list
(all summaries are plagiarized from various people at IMDB.com)
10. The Shape of Water (31 Points)
At a top secret research facility in the 1960s, a lonely janitor forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held in captivity.
CS Voice: "Above all else, The Shape of Water is the work of a master storyteller well and truly in his element. Del Toro tells his story with so much confidence and passion that it's hard not to get caught up in. It combines many different types of story threads and elements, but it never loses sight of its enormous heart." -
PhantomKnight 9. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (31 Points)So says
Doomsday Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares for battle with the First Order.
CS Voices: "Screw the negativity! The Last Jedi was a great follow up to Force Awakens. Rey has come into her own as an iconic movie hero, Kylo Ren deepens his villainy, and Luke is back in all his grumbly, Jedi might. Many complained about Force Awakens playing it too safe, but Last Jedi kept you on your toes throughout, providing us with some great stuff." -
IanTheCool 8. Baby Driver (32 Points)
After being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.
CS Voice: "I'd dare say this is Wright's best directorial venture, and easily in the top 5 of the year thusfar.
Lots of opportunities for cliches and predictability were avoided. I had a lot of fun, it wasn't ever over-the-top, and I found myself caring about every character, good or bad. The stakes were high, the movie put you nice and neatly on edge, and some risks were taken and paid off." -
daniel 7. Phantom Thread (34 Points)
Set in 1950's London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.
CS Voice: "It's a remarkably assured film which is endlessly engaging and ripe with thematic material to digest. It's got a reserved pace and is a minimalist work in many ways, but each piece is placed nearly perfectly... I've seen a lot of movies from 2017 which I loved, but I don't know if anything surprised me quite the way this did." -
PG Cooper6. Thor: Ragnarok (39 Points)
Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok, the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization, at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela.
CS Voice: "This movie pisses on every Spider-Man iteration ever made from a great height.
Probably the best Marvel film to-date, I'll need to stew on that for a while though. Top 3 at least.
Words are poor receipts for what time hath stole away.
" -
Deexan 5. Get Out (40 Points)
A young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.
CS Voices: "The best movie I've seen in a long, long, long time. Watch it get zero Academy Awards next year. Basic premise: young Black man goes visit his white girlfriend's parents and they turn out to be psychopaths. The mom is a therapist and the dad is a neurosurgeon. They kidnap Black people and turn them into slaves or sex slaves... or some shit. Peele from Key & Peele writes and directs and hits a home run, a touchdown, a slam dunk. Everything and I mean everything is amazing. Give it all the Oscars." -
Neverending 4. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (51 Points)
A mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit.
CS Voices: "I still think this needs to be on this list in part because it’s simply the most 2017 movie of 2017. We’re living in a time where entrenched power structures are in place and are causing lots of trouble but the anger against those institutions causes a lot of nastiness and sometimes consumes people and makes them act out in ways that are not productive." - Dracula
3. Dunkirk (71 Points)
Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.
CS Voices: " I think one of the overall strengths of this is the length, and how compact the movie feels. No standout acting, really, but solid all around. Mark Rylance is probably given the most to do. A lot was made of the dialogue, or lack thereof, which really adds to the feeling of tension. For me, those were some of the best moments in the movie. I do love how your dropped right into the conflict, and the movie just goes. It doesn't really give the audience time to catch up. " -
donny 2. Logan (72 Points)
In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X, somewhere on the Mexican border. However, Logan's attempts to hide from the world, and his legacy, are upended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces.
CS Voices: "I really enjoyed Logan. A lot of it was very on the nose (we get it, it's Shane!) and the Children of Men influences were so apparent but it was a really fun watch and a very satisfying ending. I especially liked the little thing that Laura did with the cross at the end." - Doomsday
1. Blade Runner 2049 (73 Points)
A young blade runner's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former blade runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.
CS Voices:
"I went in as someone who thought the original was just ok (6.5/10) but wanted to see it as a fan of Villenueve, Deakins, and Gosling. Gotta say, I think this might be a masterpiece. Obviously too early to tell but its my first five star movie of the year and it has stuck with me in the week since I've seen it. Jared Leto is the only slight negative."
-
Dhamon22 "I'm still processing. I won't write any sort of incredibly detailed review because I never do that. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The world building was done so well, the costumes were incredible (seriously, I NEED Luv's wardrobe)." -
Seakazoo "I firmly believe Villenueve is one of the best working directors today, and with Blade Runner 2049, he continues to prove why. In many respects, I'd say I prefer Blade Runner 2049 to its predecessor. This is a shining example of just how smart big-budget filmmaking can be. - PhantomKnight
"The fact that it comes anywhere close to matching the beloved status of its predecessor is a miracle in itself, but that's what they've pulled off... For now, it's certainly the best film of the year and cements Villeneuve's place as the most exciting filmmaker on the planet." - Deexan
"Blade Runner 2049 is the definition of a beautiful, stylish film with great sets, great visual effects and an enormous atmosphere that unfortunately doesn't have a whole lot underneath the surface. I admire how it didn't try to revisit the same themes that Blade Runner established but at the same time it didn't try to set itself apart either." - Doomsday
"Weirdest threesome ever.
" -IanTheCool
"Overall, I enjoyed it. It does a lot of things well. As it's mentioned in here and in most reviews, its visually breathtaking. So many beautiful shots, and a lot that has stuck with me since I've seen it. In this regard, it feels like a worthy successor to the original. It builds on and captures the feel of the original." - Donny
"There are so many ways a Blade Runner sequel could have gone wrong. They could have leaned too hard on the original, they could have strayed too far. They could have changed too much of the story, or they could have gone the soft reboot route and added nothing at all. Even barring these extreme outcomes, the task of making a sequel to a movie as important, groundbreaking, and unique as Blade Runner is seemingly a fool's errand. And yet, somehow, by some miracle, it all worked so well." - PG Cooper
"What’s immediately striking about the movie is, of course, just how well it manages of recapture the look and more importantly the feel of that original film. That is no easy task as the set decoration of that original film is beyond iconic and Denis Villeneuve seems to realize this and is very careful to make this Los Angeles look like the Blade Runner Los Angeles rather than the various cityscapes that it inspired." - Dracula
