Thought it was a pretty good ending but could have been better. I think all the butthurt about this season has made me enjoy it a little bit more. Bring on the prequels

To me, episode 4 was one of the worst. So many stupid things happened in that episode.

The ending makes sense on paper, but not in execution at all, they didn't earn the ending they went with.

Bran needed a better character arc, they dumped on him for so many seasons and turned him into a prop in a chair, literally. Then Tyrion manages to convince people he should be king because he got pushed out of a window and is now handicapped. Solid.

Dany turning to the dark side was rushed so badly they didn't give you enough time to let it unravel and take in what was happening - it was just too abrupt.

Jon was given a long long long arc of rising to prominence as a king, just to have it snatched away from him, punished for overthrowing a tyrant who burned a million innocent lives, as if he had the moral lower ground or something.

Arya was built up to be a strong killer with absolute resolve, but her character didn't ever get to achieve the goals she set out for herself.

Varys was delivered a great disservice with how he went out. I'm glad the actor didn't pull any punches and publicly spoke out about how disappointed he was with Varys' character arc.

Jaime... sigh. Jaime had the most redemptive arc in the show, and was even forgiven in the end by Bran, but then he runs right back to Cersei, undermining all of it, and screwing over Brienne. His story will forever be "he played nice when he needed others to help him get where he needed to be, but he still put the evil Cersei above everyone else, which is exactly where his character started."

And Cersei ... we deserved better. I went back and watched a couple of episodes that were some of the more well-known and loved ones, and I was quickly reminded how much of a terribly awful person she was through and through - she was given far too much mercy to just die in obscurity in a roof collapse. Arya, and the audience, deserved her moment to stare her down face-to-face and tell her all the things we wanted Cersei to hear from someone all these seasons. Tyrion deserved that chance too - to tell her to her face how wrong she was about him killing Joffrey, and to point out where it landed her. She should have survived through the end of the battle, and we should have been given that moment. It would have still been a sucky ending, but much more poetic to have Jamie die, Cersei live, and then have Tyrion and Arya find Cersei, only to have Tyrion deliver a brilliant monologue about how the only person who ever loved her is now dead and it's all her fault, before he walks away and Arya says her piece and finishes her.

I would say only Tyrion, Bronn, Samwell, and Sansa had endings that were satisfying, for me, but only Tyrion and Sansa were part of the core characters I cared the most about throughout the show. That, and Brienne. In the end, she had a sad ending as well, totally thrown aside and left heartbroken.

So, yeah, the final episode didn't have a bad ending if you look at where people ended up on paper, but how we got there undermined it entirely and made it feel forced. This, for me, is worse than Lost, Seinfeld, or Dexter - at least those endings made sense in the context of things, and there were more slaps in the face here than the singular "now i'm a lumberjack" slap in the face from Dexter.

Nah, I get it - that's essentially the rating for the overall way the show ended since it's the final episode. I'm on board with that. I was going to re-watch the series, but I'm not sure I really care to now, knowing how it ends. I'll just get frustrated with how it should have ended instead of how it did.
