Get Out for best pic? There's just no way...is there? Unless Neverending is in charge of the envelopes this year.

Dracula is betting on the preferential voting screwing over Three Billboards and Shape of Water. Admirable, but mistaken. No one saw Moonlight. If a tree falls, and no one is around, does it make a noise? They kinda have to give Get Out something to take the #OscarSoWhite stink out. And watch Greta Gerwig win Best Director to appease the #MeToo movement. They want Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig standing side-by-side with their Oscars in hand so next year they can go back to awarding white people men.

And watch Greta Gerwig win Best Director to appease the #MeToo movement. I don't think she'll win Best Director but I think she'll win Best Original Screenplay solely for that reason.

Strong Island has a decent-ish shot in documentary, and that guy's both black and trans so that could be a twofer. Between Coco and Shape of Water it could also prove to be a pretty good year for latinos and an Asian guy is almost certainly going to win for the makeup in Darkest Hour. Baby steps.

"Film twitter" is the fucking worst. ? There is a lot of debate regarding movies like Three Billboards being controversial and offensive and, like a lot of twitter, the discourse tends to be pushed in extremes. And to borrow form that Bill Maher clip Dracula shared recently, most of it is overblown and not at all reflective of the greater discourse. If you just go by Twitter, it would appear like Three Billboards is the most controversial movie of the year, but it's widespread love from critics, the film industry, and general moviegoers suggests otherwise. I've also noticed an alarming trend where any film that deals with unsavoury material is accepting of it. Three Billboards is the most obvious example, what with the accusations that the film excuses racism, but there's also been a ton of critiques that mother! is misogynistic torture porn which relishes in the suffering of its heroine. I can see where that take is coming from, but the complete refusal to discuss why it might be about misogyny rather than itself misogynistic is troubling to me.

Yeah, that argument about Three Billboards is just fucking stupid. True, there's a redemption arc of sorts for Sam Rockwell's character, but the other characters in the film continually call him out on his racism - especially a significant black character who appears later on. The way it ended didn't come off as excusing racism at all. But, of course, people always need something to complain about.

Its odd what Oscar discussion has been reduced to in the last few years. For the past few years it's been all about which demographics are nominated and to what degree. Not enough one one? Clearly there's an issue with the entire industry and it must be addressed. People counting the genders, races, sexual orientations, calculating percentages and then proclaiming how there hasn't been any progress since 1927. Then lets bring in hot political takes from people who know nothing about the subjects, saying how we need to fix the society that has made them millionaires and that people need to 'stand up' to...something. All the meanwhile you don't really hear a whole lot about movies. Then the next day they all wonder in absolute shock why the ratings are continuously going down.

The way it ended didn't come off as excusing racism at all. But, of course, people always need something to complain about. Plus the film ends with he and Mildred driving out to murder someone more or less in cold blood and while the film doesn't outright condemn this action, it also doesn't frame it as some glorious Death Wish style revenge fantasy. If anything, the implication is pretty clear that what the two are going out for is disturbing and wrong. Also, and this is maybe my own personal left-field hot take, but I suspect a lot of the vitriol that is thrown at Three Billboards stems from the fact that the film is all about exploring the nuance and complexities pertaining to investigations of sexual violence and holding law enforcement accountable. Rarely are these issues ever simple and I don't think that rubs well with a social media dominated landscape which reduces to binaries and prefers inflammatory, clickable hot takes than nuanced or complex analysis.

But also on the topic of the ending, It's left open-ended enough where we can sense that he and Mildred may ultimately decide not to go through with it; they could just as well use the drive to change their minds. And I personally like that implication of it going either way for them.
