John Goodman deserved an Oscar nomination for the last one.

They must really not have a lot of faith in this thing.

The movie actually drops tonight? Awesome! You can stay on NBC and watch This Is Us or switch over to Netflix and watch Cloverfield.

They must really not have a lot of faith in this thing. Not much, no. This was supposed to have been released in theaters months ago. It kept being pushed back, but until now it was still expected to be released in theaters sometime in March if I remember correctly. Paramount Pictures must have set some kind of record in 2017 for the amount of money lost by a major studio in only one year. It was truly disastrous for them. Even the previously reliable Transformers franchise failed to perform. What's really sad is that this was the only movie from Paramount that I was looking forward to seeing last year. If they had released this instead of Monster Trucks last January, I'm sure it would have done well. It certainly would have done better than Monster Trucks.

Paramount sold the Cloverfield franchise to Netflix because they’re broke. I think they also sold the foreign rights to Annihilation to Netflix as well.

Considering the amount of utter garbage they've been putting out lately, I can't muster any sympathy. Paramount is probably using the money from Netflix to pay for the distribution of Mission: Impossible- Fallout.

But don't worry, they have that Hasbro Cinematic Universe to comfort them.

I'm about 40 minutes in, and all I can say is woof. I was no fan of the original but liked Lane, and was somewhat interested in this one dating back to when it was called God Particle, but wow...what a dog. There's no oomph to anything in the movie. The filmmaking seems like it's half asleep.
So yeah. After seeing the final product I can definitely see Paramount washing their hands of it and saying "You can have it" to Netflix. Netflix, having made Bright, looked at it and said BRILLIANT.

That's disappointing to hear. I have a soft spot for the first Cloverfield movie. I remember getting hyped on the marketing and I enjoyed the movie. 10 Cloverfield Lane was the first movie date that sabin26 and I went on. I want to like this. Maybe he and I will watch it tonight, or sometime this week.

It was watchable, just. Essentially the equivalent of a direct-to-DVD sequel that you're willing to put up with because of your goodwill towards its theatrical progenitors.
Hopefully #4 is better.

Considering that the movie has a production budget of $45 million dollars, that's a pretty good deal for Netflix. The Superbowl ad cost Netflix $5 million, but after that, the media provided loads of free press, and the internet provided even more. They will get their money's worth out of the purchase, and then some.

I'm two minutes in and this movie could be solved if they built a fucking nuclear power plant.
