Netflix has optioned John Scalzi's best selling novel Old Man's War, and has a film in the works.
Set at an indeterminate point in the future, humanity has left the Earth and begun colonizing other worlds. The human colonies equipped with the advanced technology they've acquired from alien races have kept Earth isolated from the rest of the galaxy and technologically stunted in order to exploit it's citizens. People from nations with over-population problems are allowed to emigrate to a colony, but have no say in where they wind up. People from nations with stable populations are not allowed to be colonists. Instead, when they turn seventy-five, they are given the option leave the Earth to join the Colonial Defense Forces for a ten year term of service, followed by the opportunity to become a colonist on the world of their choice. Nobody on Earth knows exactly what this involves, but most deduce that the colonies must be able to make you young again so you're fit for battle. Retired ad-man and widower John Perry has just turned seventy-five, and is ready to roll the dice at being young again and find out what it's really like among the stars.
