The growing pains of this merger are likely to be brutal on the entire film industry. The current Disney business model is to release a small number of major films. Fox just does whatever seems like a good idea at the time, or at least they did until now. Eventually, someone will probably pick up most of the slack, but that's going to take a while. In the meantime, a lot of great movie projects that would have otherwise been made, are now never going to get off the ground.

Yeah, the Searchlight stuff was mostly great. Searchlight is safe. Bob Iger wants to make it his new Miramax.

I don't like a single thing about this move. It's just going to force the other studios to either team up or disband. I don't feel sorry for Fox or Paramount or Universal or Sony, especially since they're to blame for making bad decisions themselves over the years, but I hate the ripple effects that Disney doing this could (and likely will) cause.

Will disney remain focused on only releasing a couple massive movies every year? Or will they start pumping them out. I trust Bobby boy but whoever comes in next is what I'm more worried about.
I think we will see a slow down in production for a few years until other players pick up the slack in the independent realm.
All consolidation of media companies this large makes me nervous but clearly not much we can do. Have warren bitching about tech monopolies and conveniently avoiding the media and internet providers that are quickly becoming one.

I would like to see these studios refocusing themselves on smaller projects, but I think this only makes the opposite happen. They don't want to make "adult thrillers and dramas" because the margin is too small and yet will blow hundreds of millions of dollars on shit like Gods of Egypt. They want to take shortcuts and leapfrog their way to expensive homeruns and then when they fail they double down on this strategy to recoup the losses, and those "little" $10-20 mil films aren't enough to get them out of the red.
The studios have been foolish, reckless, and unimaginative largely, so they deserve any negativity and fallbacks they get. But I still hate everything about Disney absorbing Fox. Unless you're a Disney shareholder there's nothing to be pleased with here.

How those movies turn out will tell us how Disney plans on running the studio. My guess would be that Disney will continue focusing on a small selection of blockbusters and only Searchlight will give us the “indie” stuff.

Disney is now getting ready to gobble up the 30% of Hulu held by Comcast, giving them 90% of the company. link

It looks as though Disney is going to be making their money back from the purchase of Fox pretty quickly. They're currently in the process of selling off all of the regional sports networks they are required to unload in order to make the regulators of various countries happy. Today came the announcement that 21 of those networks in the US are being sold to Sinclair Broadcasting for over $10 billion. Disney still has loads of other networks in other countries that have to go up for sale. If they all go for these sorts of prices, Fox may end up paying for itself. link

Sinclair? Good for Disney but surely bad for your country, considering Sinclair's shady practices?

Are FX networks going to be kept relatively independent?
Probably their best tv stuff in Fox over the past 15 yrs or so.

Disney doesn’t care about Hulu. Disney's purchase of Comcast's 30% of Hulu is now a done deal, allowing them to take complete control of the streaming service as of today. link

I've always preferred Hulu to Netflix, so this buyout concerns me for Hulu's future. I like it the way it is.

Wasn't that to be expected? They paid through the nose for Fox. If they only lost $170 million after paying $72 billion, that doesn't sound so bad. The Disney IP exploitation engine has barely had the chance to even warm up yet. Just wait until there's a Nakatomi Plaza alongside The Magic Kingdom at Disney World. The bottom three floors will explode every night!
