John Badham ran out of film so he's re-using all the Burn Baby Burn scenes.

John Travolta almost quit the movie because John Badham didn't shoot his solo dance scene right. This whole scene is basically Travolta-Stigwood made. Even back in the 70's directors were getting jerked around. Marvel and Lucasfilm didn't invent this shit. Although it's tough to argue against Travolta. This scene obviously came out better than whatever Badham wanted to do. Movies are a collaborative effort.

Can you dig it? I knew you would.
Even Steven's Mom is the most depressing character in this movie.

This is the silliest scene and sub-plot in the movie. Turf war + random fight scene.

Saturday Night Fever is the Boys n the Hood for white people. It gets mislabeled as a dancing movie... or a "70's movie" in the cultural sense (not the cinematic sense). But it's really a movie about the other side of Martin Scorsese's neighborhood. There's no gangsters but you can see why the lifestyle is appealing. You have grown-up's that have wasted their lives living paycheck to paycheck. You have young men with too much free time causing trouble in the streets. You have young women whoring themselves, either for guys who don't deserve their attention or to move up in life. It's a brutally honest movie. John Travolta's character is no hero. Forget the iconic suit and great dance skills. He's as big of a loser as the people around him or nearly as big of an asshole. But over the course of the story he comes to that realization and wants to move up in life. It's an inspiring movie but isn't sappy or anything like that. It keeps it real and has a bitchin' soundtrack. I like it.

I was a little cold on it on first viewing, but I think a lot of that was rooted in the film's Grease-esque reputation which, as you accurately point out, the film does not deserve.

I was a little cold on it on first viewing, but I think a lot of that was rooted in the film's Grease-esque reputation which, as you accurately point out, the film does not deserve. I never saw Saturday Night Fever under a Grease lense because it's a regional film to me. Although it is New York based, I put it alongside Rocky as a great snapshot of my family's life in Philadelphia during that Jimmy Carter/Ronald Reagan era. It's why I used a Martin Scorsese comparison. He grew up in these neighborhoods too. He knows they're accurate too. But he has a weird obsession with criminal life, which is not what most were about. I like that Saturday Night Fever is about working class people. That feels truer to me than Mean Streets. That said, let's do Taxi Driver. I bought it on Blu-Ray last year. Was planning on doing something for the 40th anniversary or for Oscar season, but here we are in July. Have only seen this movie twice. First time I was 11 or 12. Second time I was 16 or 17. Let's see what a man in his 30's, living under Trump, thinks about it.

Billboard for Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I think De Niro kills more people here than Leatherface.

He told a story once about going to Deep Throat with Martin Scorsese and being surprised that the theater was filled with couples instead of old men in raincoats.

Deep Throat was a mainstream success because it was seen as a raunchy comedy.

I wonder if Paul Schrader researched this shit.
"Hey, Mr. Pimp. How much you charge for a 12 year old hooker? I'm asking... for a friend. He's making a movie."
