someone who remembers little about Love Story.  Nominated for Best Picture, proving once again the Academy rarely has good taste, Love Story is the granddaddy of chick flicks. This Boston-based film is about two Harvard students from opposite sides of the track that fall in love and together face all sorts of obstacles and tragedy, showing that romance can conquer all. Oliver, played by doofus faced Ryan O'Neal, is a rich kid. Jenny, played by Jewish hottie Ali McGraw, is a poor kid. Against his father's wishes, Oliver marries Jenny and gets disinherited. It causes setbacks but they manage to move forward and their love grows stronger. One day, after failed attempts to get pregnant, Jenny visits the doctor and learns that she has a fatal illness. She dies, but luckily, Oliver is still in his 20's and can find a replacement very easily. Love Story was a huge success upon release. Adjusted for inflation, it's the 37th highest grossing movie of all time. It was cynical enough for 70's audiences and had enough bullshit for people who lived through the 40's and 50's. Today it's a bit of an oddball. Arthur Hiller is a respectable filmmaker and gives Love Story personality, something that's missing from most rom-com's and rom-drama's, but it's still a silly premise. This material could have been handled more realistically and less sappy. |

Love Story is the OG The Fault in Our Stars. Today we dismiss this bullshit as only fit for teenagers but somehow they lapped it up back when it came out. You'd think the 70s would know better.

You'd think the 70s would know better. Let's give the 70's more credit. I don't know if anything "conventional" existed back then since they were making shit up as they went along. Oliver's Story feels more textbook chick flick than its predecessor but it's still very different than what you expect from the genre. The whole movie is Oliver grieving the death of Jenny. He meets Marci, played by Murphy Brown, who helps him move on, but it isn't a new love story. They don't fall in love in love and create a life together. They just date for a bit and Oliver learns to live again. It's an interesting little film. |
