The sexual tension between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer is too much. If you told me they fucked behind the scenes I'd believe you.

You lost that loving feeling
Bunch of gay men serenading the only Blonde in the room
"That's what straight people do, right?"

There was no reason for that volleyball scene at all. They could have cut it from the movie and it would have made zero difference.

If you haven't seen Top Gun, it's about the best Naval pilots competing to see whose #1. This is one of the main reasons Top Gun fails for me, at leat as an action movie. Way too much of it is just training exorcises and while there is an element of dangwr there it isn't nearly as suspenseful as engagements with enemy fighters.

Kevin Bacon is the weird kid cause he listens to heavy metal. This movie is based on Frizzo the Clown 's life. They Hollywoodized it by adding all the dancing and pop music. While I will agree that I'm getting quite old...not quite that old.

America, fuck yeah. Top Gun One of the great propaganda films of American cinema. As a teen, Top Gun was one of my favorite movies. My friends and I watched it at least once a week after it came out on VHS and my little brother got it for his birthday. We were completely oblivious to all the homosexual overtones and utterly nonsensical story. The music was awesome, the dogfights were awesome, the training scenes were awesome, the one-liners were awesome. The 80's were awesome! After moving away from home in 1991, I didn't watch Top Gun again until about 2000. It was like watching an entirely different movie. Most of the story elements don't make the slightest bit of sense, and WOW was this flick gay! The ending was truly bizarre, with much of the Top Gun graduating class being packed off to the Enterprise. Why? Is there something wrong with all the pilots currently stationed aboard? How does a carrier group engaged in active operations suddenly have three pilot slots and two rear slots open? Danger Zone is still awesome, though!

Yeah, there's only one genuine action scene in the movie but there will be 50 in the sequel and make you appreciate the more human-based original.

Even if the human drama in the original is not terribly good. Top Gun is more interesting as a pop-culture artifact than a movie. I'm not quite as old as Wyldstaar but this movie wasn't even a decade old when I first saw it. It's really not that complicated. The human story is what made it a pop culture phenomenon. Tom Cruise really is great. The guy has charm, can display a believable range of emotions and comes across as a badass even though he's a midget. The arc of the cocky pilot that lost his friend and must overcome that to win the aerial dogfight actually works. The sequel will likely fail because any trace of human story will get lost in the countless action scenes. Modern blockbusters have no restraint.
