This is a superhero movie for people who don't like superhero movies. Doc Ock and his schemes are inconsequential. The focus is plainly on Peter Parker drama. People criticize Spider-Man 1 for being campy but at least it's a fucking superhero movie.
Spider-Man > Spider-Man 3 > Spider-Man 2

In addition to the backyard byplay and the burning building rescue- A man with a personal tie to Peter Parker involves himself in a science experiment that results in his gaining of superpowers and mental instability, creating a supervillain. Our new supervillain causes an incident at a public place which draws out Spider-Man. During the incident, a woman with a personal tie to Peter finds herself hanging precariously from the side of a building. Spider-Man has to let the supervillain get away in order to save her life. The supervillain soon uses the known link between the Daily Bugle's photographer Peter Parker and Spider-Man to provoke another confrontation. Once again, the bad guy gets away, and this time Spider-Man is injured during the fight. The supervillain kidnaps Mary Jane in order to draw Spider-Man into a final battle. MJ is rescued and the baddie winds up killing themselves. |

Regardless if Spider-Man 2 is too similar in structure to the first or not, fact is, Spider-Man 2 has a stronger and much more dramatically compelling script and is much better executed than the first. It still holds up for me, and I'm with PG Cooper - it remains one of the best superhero films to date. |
