Looks so fucking clean too.
Gonna be a helluva choice for theaters tho... The mouse vs matrix this Xmas. Who gets Dolby? Who gets imax? Can we please get both?

I mean let's be real, this is a glossy retcon of the original that's not gonna rewrite the franchise. It looks fun and it has potential to surprise, but Dune is gonna be superior to this in absolutely every way.
Lana Wachowski vs. Denis isn't a fair fight in the slightest.

Would you prefer the term reboot instead? It's essentially the exact plot of the original. We're doing the same dance we did in 1999. Again, I'm excited for this movie. But nothing in the trailer suggests the wheel is being reinvented.

Nothing about Lana Wachowski's filmography suggests to me she'd be playing this safe. I'd also argue Denis and Lana are closer than you might think. Denis may not have missed as hard as Lana has, but none of his movies are as good as The Matrix or (hot take in bound) Cloud Atlas. Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited for Dune and hope it turns out great, but in terms of blockbusters with the potential to take wild left turns and bold risks, I think Matrix takes the cake.

Heh, just remembered my CS signature. Human battery was a studio note. In the initial script the Machines used nuclear fusion but used humans for neural networking. I don’t know if that’s smarter or dumber or the same, but it was the Brothers Warner that wanted the concept simplified to human batteries.

Motherfucker, I’m talking about the green filter. Ah gotcha, yes that look (and the noir look in general) was sorely lacking in the sequels. They went for a sterile look in those movies that was very disappointing. I suppose it was done to further offset the differences between the Matrix and the ugly reality of Zion and the tunnels, but it just doesn't have that special look the first film does.

We'll see. Cloud Atlas is a movie that's for some reason generated a following among the Letterboxd crowd that I'll never understand. I don't think it's a good movie in the slightest and has none of the thematic depth it pretends to. I'd counter that all of Denis' filmography, even back to his first films from Quebec, are all superior to that movie. But, yeah, some people like that movie for reasons I'll never comprehend. I agree that The Matrix edges out the best of Denis' work, but after that you're really, really reaching. Blade Runner 2049, Incendies, Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners, Polytechnique vs. The Matrix, Bound, The Matrix Reloaded, Cloud Atlas, Speed Racer, Jupiter Ascending. I mean, it's really not even close. Denis continues to only get better, blending the sort of arthouse sensibilities with big budget filmmaking. The Wachowskis haven't made anything that wasn't a horrendous flop in 20 years. Lana HAD to make this movie because Warner Bros. wasn't going to fund another debacle unless they got this one. Wachowskis are always interesting and I agree they never play it safe, but everything after The Matrix has been a dour disappointment and I think expectations around this project have been tempered but intrigued for this reason. Hard to justify a director that's been on a bad streak since 2003 over one that's at the top of their game and climbing.

I used to take pride in saying that whenever I started a movie I would finish it no matter what. Jupiter Ascending broke me of that completely and demonstrated that there are indeed movies that are definitely worth turning off.

I agree that Denis is on a hot streak. Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 are his best movies. I'm not wild about Sicario and Prisoners though. Well-crafted movies that are a lot sillier and more shallow than they appear.

Cloud Atlas was great at parts, actively bad at others, but mostly great..
I hated Speed Racer and the sequels so much I'd written the Wachowski Sisters off. I didn't watch Atlas until last years 2000s thread, but I'm cautiously optimistic about this trailer.

I watched Cloud Atlas in years ago, 2013 maybe and I really enjoyed it. I know it's very much a love or hate film and I definitely owe it a rewatch.

Ah gotcha, yes that look (and the noir look in general) I don’t think the new one is even shot on film.

Lotta story details that would otherwise be kept in the dark, if that's something you don't like seeing skip this trailer.
