www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/matrix-reboot-works-at-warner-bros-986292First of all... FUCK you WARNER BROS! Okay now thats out of my system... Alright here's my 5 cents as to why this is a really bad idea. 1. The idea of rebooting the first Matrix is dumb... Because that movie is a classic you cannot make it any better. Sure some ideas how humans are used as batteries is annoying but the overall cinematic experience cannot be topped. The classic gun fight scenes and bullet time, to this day remain top notch and amazing. 2. The only reason this is even being considered is because WB knows they can make reboots and sequels andt hope people who loved the original will come back and watch it. This is not going to happen because everything they try to do with the story is not going to come close to the original Matrix. Don't believe me? Watch any sequel to Terminator 2 (By the same Studio) and let me know how that goes. This is the same exast thing they are doing with the Matrix franchise it will bomb and people will complain just like they did with the recent Terminator movies.

It'll make money. Warner Brothers isn't running out of idea, just good ones. They've been around forever and it won't be the first movie from the late 90s early 00s that will get the reboot/remake. If they see a potential money maker, and if they can fix the mess that is the sequels they will do it. We can't blame them entirely for the idea, look at what makes money in the theaters...that's the type of movies that Warner Brothers will continue to put out. If you want it to stop, well that's a huge general public you'll have to get to agree with you.

The Matrix is already a reboot of The Matrix. After probably 10 watches in my lifetime, I still have no idea what the fuck he's saying.

After probably 10 watches in my lifetime, I still have no idea what the fuck he's saying. The Matrix is a loop. No matter what Neo does, the results will always be the same. It's essentially free will vs destiny. The machines need humans to keep things running, but since they are rebellious by nature, you gotta give them the illusion of rebellion. Neo is just a program in the system. He's there to give people hope, to offer a distraction, while the machines keep the wheels in motion. The humans don't control anything. They just think they do. It's part of the reason of why people hate the sequels. It took all of the joy out of the original.

Yeah, I got that out of the third movie when it came out.
His speech is a jumbled cacophony of high school vocabulary words interjected at unnecessary points to make him sound intelligent.

There are several reasons why this is obviously a terrible idea and pathetic attempt by Warner Bros. to milk this should be dormant franchise further. The main one for me is that there is absolutely no way that a reboot can in any way drub up the amount of sheer spectacle from a storytelling and special effects standpoint. We can debate whether or not the plot is "original" or not (I say it certainly is), but it's clear that the ideas the original film brought forth mesmerized audiences in 1999 and still do today. By now everyone is very familiar with the story, so a simple retread of this will impress absolutely no one. The Matrix spawned many, many imitators, and the reboot will fall into nothingness like the Equilibriums did many years ago. Either they're going to have to take the film in a familiar and yet totally different direction, which seems impossible to me, or stick with the same story and hope it catches on with new audiences, which seems even more impossible to me.
The other end of this are the effects. Everyone, I mean everyone, was mesmerized by the bullet time sequences The Matrix introduced. Neo bending his back to become a breathing right angle is so famous even people who haven't seen the film know exactly where that's from. There is absolutely no way in my mind that a reboot can invent or reinvent any of this. The Matrix was a surprise hit, and it sucked people in by being, well, "new". It's like when some geniuses decided to remake Godard's 1960 film Breathless. That film is literally declared the groundbreaking film it is for being "new"; it completely challenged the rules of cinema and sneered at any ideology proclaiming "cinema has to be this" which blew people away. The 80s remake is more a remake solely of the story, but to me that makes the film completely irrelevant and fails to even attempt to mimic what makes Breathless what it is today.
So basically my point is The Matrix is beloved for several reasons, most of which entails it introducing innovation and wowing audiences as intelligent, spectacle cinema with its plot and special effects. This reboot is damned if it attempts a paltry imitation, and it's damned if it strays off and tries to be something new and people are pissed because "this isn't The Matrix!" It's completely insane to do this for any reason other than financial ones, but I don't need to explain that to this group. Reboots, remakes, sequels, etc. are generally a bad idea anyways, but there are certain films like this one where it's a REALLY bad idea.

I'd point out the irony of the implication of a gif about a man taking it out on his computer at the notion of a Matrix reboot, but I think it might be self evident. Rage against the machine, indeed.

I live in hope. Either A) This'll be debunked and we can all go on with our lives or B) This'll be one of those rare reboots that's good...
Who am I kidding, we're doomed!

Nobody wants to see a prequel... do a sequel that takes place a 100 years after the events of the original trilogy that would have made more sense.

I remember years ago I would have loved a Matrix prequel television series using Trinity as the main character that would have lead up to the first movie. It might have given us more fleshed out characterizations for Cypher, Apoc, Switch, Tank, Dozer, and Mouse.
But doing a Matrix prequel today? I dunno. The whole cyberpunk theme the Matrix utilized feels soooooo late-90's/early-2000's. I still have a soft spot for the first two films (the third, not so much), but they'd feel a bit out of style if they were made today. I'd think certain aesthetics of the film's style would need to be overhauled if they were to try another one. Hell, they'd be better off rebooting it anyway, so they wouldn't necessarily have to cling to it.
But then again, I thought a live action Transformers movie was doomed to failure, so what do I know?
Meh. Hollywood can do whatever the hell it wants. That doesn't necessarily mean I care.
