Whaaaaat?
I feel like I'm missing something. Opera and classical undercutting every scene (a soundtrack shouldn't just be there for ambiance) and a weepy, Lifetime original movie concept; a film that feels more like something Oprah would've stamped her seal of approval on. Manchester by the Sea reminds me of why I don't bother with Oscar contenders.
Character studies are not easy and I get that, but there are directors doing much better, much more inventive work out there that make this look like pap. You see, this is merely arthouse for people who are unwilling to digest anything else.

I watched it today. Didn't care for it, either.

This movie was balls!! Super depressing scene with the main character's family dieing in a fire. We find out the wife survived as they try and fail repeatedly to put her in the back of an ambulance and the theater is awkwardly laughing knowing this is wrong. And then straight back to charred remains of dead children? You can't put a joke in the middle of that! His life is ruined, his children are dead but let's have a joke about the ambulance people being shit at their job?
I'd give the movie a pass if it was full of jokes like this but it wasn't. The only other weird joke I really remember is when they were walking up and down streets when they forgot where they parked and that was just odd.

I didn't see that as a joke, just a piece of realism.

Also, that bit wasn't scripted. It happened on set by accident but felt real so Lonnergan left it in.

In regards to the stretcher scene, it didn't feel out of place to me at all, just a piece of uncomfortable realism, like Ian said. In fact, none of the humor in the film feels out of place. Before seeing the movie, I read a few reviews saying how well it integrated comedy, which left me confused but after I finally saw it, I walked away going, "Now I get it." I feel like the levity Lonergan integrated will help the movie be pretty re-watchable, in spite of the heavy subject matter.

I didn't see that as a joke, just a piece of realism. My rather full cinema seemed to think it was a joke since it was the one time anyone laughed. Also, that bit wasn't scripted. It happened on set by accident but felt real so Lonnergan left it in. Because apparently the director couldn't shout, "CUT!!! Let's do that again and get it right this time!" In regards to the stretcher scene, it didn't feel out of place to me at all, just a piece of uncomfortable realism, like Ian said. In fact, none of the humor in the film feels out of place. What humour? That was the one joke. If there were other jokes nobody seemed to laugh at them. I suppose the lost car bit might've been a "joke" but it wasn't funny it was confusing and weird. I'm picking on this one scene as the reason I hated this movie but that isn't the only reason, it was just a boring bland movie.

Off the top of my head, there was the Star Trek conversation, the lost car scene, the scene where they were trying to whisper-shout at each other during the wake and nobody could understand what the other was trying to tell them - those are just a few examples. The latter one works especially well because it feels like it's something that can, and probably has, happened to any of us.

There's the business with Lucas Hedges trying to get busy with the girl upstairs, there's some sort of dark comedy with the freezer, there are little moments like the family friend saying he can't take Lucas Hedges in because he's "trying to get rid of kids at this point," and other little things. These aren't, like, huge jokes that have been set up like gags in a Will Ferrel movie but there are a lot of little funny moments that come in naturally from the way these characters interact.

The general Boston rapaport has a certain comedic vibe and in addition to the scenes PhantomKnight menioned there's also stuff like the "You wanna be his guardian?" moment with the friend on the boat. Also the audience I was with definitely had some laughs and I know I did too.

There was several hilarious moments in the film, I wrote in my review that it was possibly the funniest film of the year while also being the saddest. The awkwardness of Affleck was funny in its sheer uncomfortable feelings, and whenever he sparred and argued with his nephew or when all these loudmouth Bostonians are yelling over each other all made myself and the audience laugh a lot. This didn't win the Oscar for Best Screenplay just because it portrayed grieving extremely well, but also because it was a very sharp and witty script in how it finds humor in life even if people aren't seeking it.

Also the scene where Affleck jokingly threatens to slap the kid, with Lonergan walking by saying "great parenting."

Honestly, I liked the humor and it kept this film from being pure grief porn (i.e. Iñárritu). Like Drac said, it happened organically from the characters' interactions.
And regarding Affleck's scene with Lonergan, I'd rather Lonergan not appear in his own film. That took me out completely; it was a little too stagey.
