Everyone had a CD wallet - which they loved showing off to classmates - and a portable CD player. Cassettes were already old technology at the time. I think the last tape I bought was the Lion King soundtrack in 1994. So the idea of re-releasing the Slim Shady LP on cassette seems hilariously random to me. Although, ironically, I could STILL play it. My home stereo has two tape slots. Meanwhile, I haven't been able to use VHS for 5 years cause modern TV's don't connect to VCR's unless you have an adapter. So there is a charm to music technology. The fact that hipsters can still purchase vinyl's at Urban Outfitters says a lot.

Most modern TVs do still have regular A/V inputs and there are definately VCRs out there that can be connected with A/V cables... not that I'd recommend watching a VHS tape in 2016 if it can be avoided. As for releasing a 1999 rap album on cassette... yeah, pretty dumb. It did apparantly get released on the format as evidenced by an eBay search I just did ( it can be purchased there for $39.99 if you're a crazy person). My ebay searching also turned up cassette versions of MMLP, The Eminem Show, and Encore, so clearly the fromat lived on longer than you'd think, although the Encore one appeared to be Russian so maybe it's just a matter of certain markets being a bit behind the times. Eminem's character in 8 Mile was seen listening to music on a cassette walkman so it's clearly a format that means something to him, but it's not one that's worth reminiscing about. EDIT: Apparantly the last cassette tape issued by a major label was Jadakiss' The Last Kiss. That was in frickin' 2009 |

It did apparently get released on the format I'm aware. Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, etc were selling cassettes (and VHS) for most of the 2000's. I'm sure it did well with kids, senior citizens and anyone driving an old car. Still - it was an outdated technology and an ancient one now. It would be like selling a movie on Beta tape. |

Pretty weird, not sure what the point of that is. It baffles me how much of vevo is littered with censored videos, you'd think the artists would curate their shit better. Maybe they're trying to dive people to Spotify/Apple/Tidal where they get a bigger cut.
