"Somebody save me." - That band from the theme song
NOVEMBER 2010
PILOT I have fond memories of watching the pilot. At the time, I needed some distraction from all the constant 9/11 news coverage. I think we all felt that way and welcomed the 2001-02 TV season with open arms. As a result, I wasn't judgmental. So, I was very curious to see how I would critique the pilot with my cynical 2010 eyes. Surprisingly, I loved it. If I were to do a TOP TEN list the pilot would definitely be included. If you remove the sub-plots involving the Scarecrow and Lex Luthor it could fit very well into a Superman movie. Even the visual effects weren't too bad. The budget must have been pretty big. My only problem was the Scarecrow thing. It felt forced and the outcome was very underwhelming. For the first freak-of-the-week, this dude really sucked.
X-RAY Everybody remembers this episode for one scene. The one where Clark sees-through the girl's locker room and watches Lana get naked. And, honestly, that's the only reason I recorded it. But, to my surprise, I completely forgot that Lizzy Caplan was the freak-of-the-way. Were we all so perverted in 2001 that we forgot the highlight of the episode? Caplan is awesome in everything she's ever been in. She even over-shadowed the hot chicks in Mean Girls and stole the show in season one of True Blood. I don't understand how Caplan isn't more famous. But, anyway, her character ON PAPER is pretty dumb. She can disguise herself as anyone she wants. You know, like the Chameleon in Spider-Man. Geez, I wonder where Gough & Millar got the idea. [/sarcasm] And she has a lesbian crush on Lana. This character would have been horrible with the wrong actress, but Caplan pulls it off. It's almost sad that she was a freak-of-the-week instead of a recurring villain.
CRAVING In this episode we have another future celebrity as a freak-of-the-week. Amy Adams plays a fat chick who loses weight because her vegetables are contaminated by kryptonite. But, as a drawback, she gets the hunger for humans. It's at this point where the freaks-of-the-week are starting to get ridiculous and tiresome. I stopped being a regular viewer of Smallville because of these weak villains. Amy Adams is so sweet and loveable, but it's tough not to roll your eyes. The highlight of the episode is the ending between Clark and Lana. It's amazing being reminded of a time when Lana wasn't an annoying c--t. She was so beautiful and so sweet and so...worthy of sex. It's shocking that so many people preferred Chole (Allison Mack) at the time. I think Tornado was one of them. Put down the crack pipe! S1 Lana > S1 Chloe
ROGUE What a joy it is to watch a regular villain as opposed to a freak-of-the-week. If Gough & Millar weren't idiots this would have been the second or third episode of the series. It's the logical follow-up to the pilot. Clark is blackmailed by a corrupt cop who witnessed one of his heroic moments. When he doesn't respond to his demands, Jonathan is framed for murder and arrested. It's pretty good stuff. On a side note, Kelly Brook guest stars as Lex's girlfriend and the chick who'll help him take down his father. I approve of anything with Kelly Brook in it.
OVERALL, there's good and bad things about these season one episodes. I like the colorful palette. The show looks too dark these days. It's Superman not Batman. I like that none of the characters are cry-babies. Clark isn't complaining about his dual-identity. Lana isn't complaining about relationship problems. Lex isn't complaining about his father, Clark, Lana, and life in general. Chloe isn't sexually frustrated yet. It's also great not hearing all the characters beating Clark on the head about his destiny. It's refreshing, really. Then again, we have to deal with the annoying freaks-of-the-weak. Whitney, Lana's boyfriend, is the most useless character this show has ever had. I understand that they wanted to give Lana a jock boyfriend, but they could have atleast given him more personality. But, perhaps, the biggest flaw of season one is the lack of Lionel. Lex isn't really evil yet. He's up to no good, but he isn't a criminal mastermind. So, they really needed a core villain. Without it, the season just seemed very flat. There's no arc. There's nothing they're leading to. What's the motivation to watch every week? If you miss an episode then who cares? You didn't miss anything important. Perhaps this is the real reason I lost interest at the time.

SHIMMER I don't know why I recorded this episode. I guess it was to check out the Kelly Brook bath tub scene. That scene aside, this episode was horrible. The villain was an invisible person. Did the budget run out or something? The effects were laughable at best. And, D.J. Caruso, of all people, had the misfortune of directing this episode.
LEECH Remember that episode in season 7 where Clark's powers are transferred to Lana during a thunderstorm and then she gets mad with power? Well, guess where they got that idea from. Here, instead of Lana, it's Shawn Ashmore and he gets labeled SUPERBOY by Chloe. How funny! All joking aside, this is a pretty good episode. Like Rogue it was a logical step after the pilot. It shows how Clark's life could be if he had the wrong parents and wrong attitude in life.
NICODEMUS This episode was awesome! Jonathan dissing Lex is definitely a highlight of season one. As is Lana stripping down next to Clark at the school swimming pool. Although it's funny that they used a body double for that scene. How embarrasing for Kreuk. I can just imagine that conversation with Gough & Millar. "Yeah, Kristin, you're cute and all but clearly you don't have the body for this scene. We're gonna bring in a Victoria's Secret model.
OBSCURA This is the second-to-last episode of season one. And...it kinda sucks. The main plot is that Lana gets caught in an explosion in a kryptonite-infected field and can see the vision of corrupt cop who kidnaps Chloe. Whatever. The good stuff are the sub-plots. Lex discovers that a spaceship did indeed land during the meteor shower and Clark & Chloe have their romantic moment. I was happy for Chloe, but we all know things didn't turn out well. It's too bad that Clark never gave her the sex she deserved.
TEMPEST Lots and lots of good stuff here. The battle between Lex and Lionel, that reporter guy, Clark and Chloe, and pretty much everything during the last 20 minutes. But, I still found the Lana-Whitney plotline kind of funny. To begin with, why is a senior even dating a freshmen to begin with? Then, he joins the Marines and asks her to wait for him. Dude, she's like 15. Speaking of 15, is there a reason why Clark, Lana, and Chloe are driving around? Last time I checked you had to be 16 to drive without an adult next to you. Do they really just let a bunch of HS Freshmen drive around in Kansas?

VORTEX This was a really, really good episode that dealt with the aftermath of the Tornado. But it's also the beginning of the sexually frustrated Chloe. She's crying in the woods. She's thinking about whether or not to delete those photos from the Spring Formal where Clark's penis was almost inside her. Oh, poor Chloe.
HEAT This episode was HILARIOUS! It's the second episode of season two and takes place three months after the tornados. Clark is happy to be done fixing the farm. Chloe is a bit of a b---h now, but she's dressing very sexy so it doesn't matter. And, Lana is making videos for Whitney who is fighting in the war. But none of that matters because the biology teacher is REALLY HOT. So hot that Clark develops heat vision. You see, Gough & Millar treated Clark's powers as puberty so when Clark gets horny he, um, sets things on fire. To make matters worse, this biology teacher is engaged to Lex after only having met him two weeks ago. What's up with that? Well, you see, she's secretly Poison Ivy. You know, the Batman villain. But for legal reasons they gave her another name. So, she has the power to control men except for Clark since he's immune to it for whatever reason. But not immune enough to avoid setting things on fire. The highlight of the episode is Poison Ivy trying to kill Lex by having Jonathan randomly pop up in the mansion with a shot gun.
DUPLICITY So, this is the episode where Pete finds out the truth about Clark. And, Lionel is walking around blind. And, um, that Black doctor guy is going crazy. I felt very in-different towards this episode. Major things happen, but I didn't really care. Maybe it's because, in hindsight, Pete is such a small part of this show. The dude was only in the first three seasons. He's a footnote in a show that lasted 10 years. Chloe finding out was a much bigger deal, in my opinion.
RED This episode was awesome! I may have to include this one in my top 10. Everyone knows that I'm always critical of Tom Welling's performance, but he really kicked butt here. He was basically the villain of the episode and he pulled it off wonderfully. When he chases after Jessie in the cornfield that was definitely a highlight for me.
NOCTURNAL On a special episode of Smallville, Clark and Lana befriend a boy who is being abused by his parents. If you or anyone you know are a victim of abuse please call. . .nah. . .just kidding. This episode starts kinda silly, but it gets good half-way through. Clark really met his match with that Jekyll and Hyde kid and the Lionel-Martha relationship begins here. So, some pretty good stuff.
REDUX I don't want to sound like a broken record, but man, I hate the freaks-of-the-week. They do nothing but ruin episodes. Right here, is the perfect example. Redux is an episode filled with backstories. We meet Clark's grandfather, Lex's former principal, and Lana discovers that her parents were legally seperated about a year before she was born. In that time, her mom hooked up with another guy and he might be her biological father. So, this episode's theme is family secrets. Even Lex's subplot eventually ends up being about his father and how much in common they have. And, yet, in the middle of all this we get a freak-of-the-week that's completely irrelevant. It's this cheerleader who is really a 100-year-old lady who stays young by killing people. I mean, really, who cares? Was there a contractual obligation to have these villains or something? What a waste of the viewer's time and what a distraction from the real storylines.
LINEAGE What an amazing rebound this episode is. They went from a horrible episode to a Top 10 contender. Here, one of Lionel's former flames shows up and claims to be Clark's mother and that Lionel is his father. Holy Drama, Batman! Now, of course, we know this woman is crazy. But her craziness forces the Kent's to tell Clark about the day he arrived on Earth and the events that took place to secure his adoption. This is an episode that would have been perfect for season one since it expands on Clark's origin as well the Luthors. But, I guess they saved it for season two so they could do the whole Lex's brother thing. Which, probably, could have been done in season one as well.
EDIT: Oh, and in Lineage, Lana confronts the dude that her mom was shagging up with.
DICHOTIC Oh, my God! It's Jonathan Taylor Thomas! You can just hear the teenage girls screaming. Or...maybe not. It was 2002 not 1992. But, anyway, this episode was surprisingly good. Thomas plays a dude who can split himself in two and he dates Lana and Chloe at the same time. Lucky bastard. Meanwhile, Lex hooks up with his future wife a/k/a the oh-so-hot Emmanuelle Vaugier.

SKINWALKER In classic Smallville tradition, it takes 10 episodes for the writers to get to the point. Here, we FINALLY get to the season's real storyline. Clark, through some Native American friends, discovers the cave that may hold information to his Kryptonian heritage. Meanwhile, he starts to date this VERY HOT Native American chick who can turn into a wolf and kill people. I have mixed feelings about this episode. On one hand, it's pretty good, but on the other hand, it's wasted potential. They should have kept these characters for a few more episodes and Clark's relationship with that chick should have lasted a lot longer and been developed more. Oh, well. This wouldn't be Smallville if they weren't screwing up.
VISAGE Lizzy Caplan returns as the Psycho Lesbian Chameleon from season one. And, man, what a joy it is to see her again. She might be my favorite villain. This time, she impersonates Whitney (Lana's boyfriend from S1) who returns from the war and wants to rekindle the relationship. When that doesn't work, Ms. Psycho Lesbian finds out ways to get close to Lana. One of them is impersonating Chloe and it leads to this gem of a scene: [REMOVED] Then, she impersonates Clark and the episode ends with a Clark vs. Clark fight scene. Keep in mind, this was WAY before the Clark vs Bizarro stuff in season 7. And, quite frankly, way better. Tornado will hate me for saying this, but Visage is a TOP 10 episode. In a guilty pleasure sort of way.
INSURGENCE Comic book legend Jeph Loeb co-wrote this episode and let's be thankful that he did. It's as Anti-Smallville as you can get. It's a thrill ride that gets to the point and makes more progress than 11 episodes of Smallville combined. The episode begins with Lex discovering that Lionel is bugging his office to steal business information from him. As payback, Lex decides to do the same but it backfires when the people he hired doublecross him and turn out to be thieves instead. To complicate matters, Martha (who has been working for Lionel throughout most of the season) is at LuthorCorp when the break-in occurs. She and Lionel are held hostage and it's a good thing that she is because when the robbers break into the safe they don't find money. They find Kryptonite, files on Clark, and the key to the space ship. And all of this is just the first 30 minutes. The final 30 minutes are Clark's attempt to rescue Martha. It leads to, at this point, the highlight of the series. Clark LEAPS from the Daily Planet into LuthorCorp. It shouldn't come as a surprise that I'm including this as a TOP 10 episode as well.
Now, let's visit the vaults:
SUSPECT Who shot J.R.? Who shot Mr. Burns? Who shot Lionel Luthor?! On paper, this episode sounds ridiculous but its pulled off quite effectively. Plus, a lot of things are set up for future seasons. We get to witness the anger issues that ultimately killed Jonathan Kent in season 5. Lex Luthor is a suspect and he eventually does kill Lionel in season 7. So, it's a nice episode to look back on. My only problem is that many things are left unexplained. It's never revealed why exactly Martha Kent has been fired nor why Jonathan is upset enough to confront Lionel at the mansion. In the previous episode, Jeph Loeb, did a good job of having Martha continue to work for Lionel as a way to protect Clark. So, it's disappointing to see it eliminated so quickly.
RUSH CHLOE: So, what other powers do you have? CLARK: Come back here and let me show you.
That's all I'm gonna say about that episode.
PRODIGAL Like I said a few weeks ago, this Luthor Family Battle stuff would have been perfect for season one. Season two should have just focused on the caves, Lionel's secret file on Clark, and more episodes for the Native Americans. Oh, and it's kind of funny that the dude from Vampire Diaries played Lex's brother.
FEVER This is a potential top 10 episode. And, Chloe is still depressing to watch.
ROSETTA I still remember what a big deal this episode was back in the day. I even recorded it on VHS. LOL. It's funny to think of a time before DVR's were a common household item. But, anyway, people mostly remember this episode because of Christopher Reeve's guest appearence but, really, the CONTENT is the highlight. Remember how I said that if they took the pilot of Smallville and put it in a Superman movie it would be great? I would say the same about Rosetta.
VISITOR Before re-visiting season two, this was one of the episodes that I remembered quite well for some reason. The episode is nothing special, but there's something about it that makes it stand out. Here, Clark meets a strange boy who he suspects might be a fellow Kryptonian. He's really just a meteor freak with the power of healing. Which is funny because those were the powers given to Chloe in season 7. Gotta love recycling, huh? I really like the horse healing scene and the ending at the transmission satellite place.
WITNESS So, first it's Jonathan Taylor Thomas and now his TV brother. Someone in season two must have been a big fan of Home Improvement. Brad Taylor guest stars as a baseball player who uses Kryptonite as a steroid. So, he's really strong and can kick Clark's butt. Then, half-way through the episode, Clark is reminded that he does have other superpowers. Hilarious, huh? It's a silly episode, but the action scenes were well done and it has the second best fight scene of the season. Plus, Brad Taylor was actually pretty good.
ACCELERATE The only thing I remembered about this episode was that the Janitor from Scrubs was in it. And, really, that's the most memorable thing about it. This episode is just...odd. I don't know why they aired an episoded about Lana being stalked by the clone of a dead girl so late in the season.
CALLING and EXODUS What a great finale. A lot of s--t went down. Clark and Lana finally hook up. Chloe became a jealous/crazed stalker. Lionel is kicking butt. Lex opens up to Helen and it ends up backfiring on him. Jor-El makes his debut. And, Martha loses the baby. Then, Clark puts on the Red-K ring and runs away to Metropolis.
OVERALL, Season 2 was great. I take back every horrible thing I ever said about it. Tornado, I hope you forgive me. My only problem with this season was the lack of Jeph Loeb. Insurgence is a highlight in Smallville's history. An example of what it could be with the right people involved.

EXILE and PHOENIX My love for Red-K Clark is well known. So, I was very pleased with the season premiere. He's kicking butt and taking names. Then, he gets hired by Morgan Edge (Rutger Hauer) to steal from Lionel Luthor. All of that is awesome. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor is stranded in an island and going crazy. Compared to the main plot, this stuff is boring. It's the reason why this episode isn't a 10/10. So, anyway, Stalker Chloe has been keeping tabs on Clark all summer and finally decides to tell Lana about it. Now knowing his location, Lana informs the Kents. Jonathan, with the help of Jor-El, gets superpowers and goes after Clark. A series highlight for sure. They fight and the Red-K ring is broken in the process. Now that Clark is "free" he heads back to Smallville. Morgan Edge also heads to Smallville and confronts Clark about the stolen object. That all leads to more awesome stuff. But, again, there's that Lex Luthor stuff getting in the way. He's rescued and returns to seek revenge on Helen. What a waste of time. Regardless, it was a great premiere.
EXTINCTION This is an episode that would have been better for season one. That guy from Desperate Housewives plays a kid who's on the hunt to kill all the meteor freaks. Smallville's version of hate crime. You know, seeing how they lack so much Blacks and Jews. In the process, Lex discovers that he's a meteor freak and Lana suspects that Clark may be one too. All of that is okay, I guess. I did like that Clark was attacked by Kryptonite Bullets. But the highlight of the episode is the "relationship" between Chloe and Lionel. It's a great build up to the finale where Chloe's house blows up as Lionel is getting his hair shaved in prison. I can't wait till the finale, man. I have such fond memories of it. I hope it holds up.
SLUMBER Usually, I'm not a fan of Smallville filler episodes. But this one worked quite well. I liked the idea of that girl in a coma asking for Clark's help through his dreams. Especially since we got to witness his subconscience. The last line was also great:
LANA: Who said anything about skinny dipping?
PERRY Michael McKean was awesome as Perry White. He literally saves the episode. It's one of those where someone ALMOST discovers Clark's secret. There has been like a hundred of these. So, only watch it for McKean.
RELIC I really enjoyed this episode. It features the first true appearence of Jor-El and one of the few where he isn't a jackass. Plus, Lex begins to dig a bit deeper into Lionel's past. In the grand scheme of things, this is an important episode. A lot of backstory into the "fathers." We even meet Jonathan's dad.
MAGNETIC This episode was a bit cringeworthy. It was difficult to watch Clark as the jealous dude.
SHATTERED Lex's psychotic episode at the island comes back to haunt him. While attempting to expose his father and Morgan Edge as the murderers of his grandparents he begins to have hallucinations...or so they say. It was a pretty good episode with a lot of memorable scenes.
ASYLUM Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Iceman, and the dude from Desperate Housewives return to kick Clark's butt. They're all patients at Belle Rev (or whatever it's called) and so is Lex who was committed by Lionel. Clark tries to save him, but a lot of things get in the way. It was a pretty good episode as well.
WHISPER Clark gets super hearing...and glasses. He doesn't keep the glasses (what a shame) but the super hearing was there to stay. Also, that other dude from Vampire Diaries plays some guy who wants to have sex with Lana.

HEREAFTER
This episode was okay, but two big moments occurred. It featured the first appearence of Superman's cape and Jonathan gets his first heart attack. VELOCITYPete "the boss" Ross has got to be the most useless character in the first three seasons of Smallville. Even the producers and writers came to this realization and started to figure out ways to get rid of him. Here, we have a ridiculous Fast and the Furious knockoff with Pete as a successful street fighter who gets into some serious trouble. He f--ks up so much that by the end Clark wants nothing to do with him. In the previous episode, Delete, Chloe mentions that Lois Lane is her cousin (ending fanboy rumors that she was gonna dye her hair Black and become her) and now Pete pretty much ruined his friendship with Clark. The writing was on the wall for season 4 by this point. Looking back, it's amazing that we missed this big hint by Gough & Millar. Then again, who would have thought that Lois Lane would show up on the show so soon? OBSESSIONClark loves Lana, but he easily gets distracted by other chicks. In season one, he briefly hooked up with the sexually frustrated Chloe. In season two, he briefly hooked up with a Native American chick who turned into a werewolve and then got killed. And, now, in season three, he briefly hooks up with a psycho blonde chick. You know, the type that Tornado usually hangs out with these days. The chick's name is Alicia and she can teleport. I imagine that Gough & Milar were watching X2: X-Men United and thought, "hey, there's something else we can rip off." But the beauty here is that she teleports into Clark's bedroom and they start gettin' it on! That is until Jonathan walks into the room and ruins everything. What a bastard. It's funny to note that Clark got closer to losing his virginity here than when he was wearing the Red-K ring and gettin' it on with Chloe. Poor Chloe. She can never win one. RESURRECTIONJonathan is at the hospital to undergo heart surgery, but Clark has other things on his mind. What a wonderful son. It's funny how they never mention the unborn sibling he killed. CRISISClark gets a phone call...FROM THE FUTURE. And it's Lana. Adam killed her. Oh, no. ------------------------------------------------------------------ LEGACYJeph Loeb arguably wrote the best episode of season two. But he got upstaged by a Christopher Reeve guest appearence. So, this time he decides to add the man to his latest effort. To bad he didn't also add a bald Lionel killing people from prison. But the man is human after all. Anyway, Loeb is a master at picking up the slack and getting things done. He's the anti-Gough/Millar. Here, he gets the ball rolling with several plotlines that were getting pushed to the side in favor of other nonsense like the stupid Adam stuff. In Legacy, Jonathan is reaching the limits of his deal with Jor-El, Lex is working for the FBI to bring his father down, Lionel's obsession with Clark and the cave goes into autopilot, and Clark seeks more answers from Dr. Swann. That's a lot for a 1-hr episode. And he even manages to squeeze in some Lana bull s--t. Gotta love the man. The MAIN highlight of the episode is the fight scene between Jonathan and Lionel. It was crazy good. I have a soft spot for the Lana-Chloe fight in Delete, but this is definitely better:

MEMORIAA lot of information about Lex and Lionel Luthor is answered in this episode. We also catch a glimpse of Krypton and Clark's parents. Interesting stuff. Miles Millar directed the episode and did a pretty good job. Although, I didn't care for the X2: X-Men United rip-offs. TALISMANMore cave and Indian nonsense. Although this episode is directed by Jonathan Kent. So...it's different that way. FORSAKENLana's dead childhood friend and the Janitor from Scrubs return to cause more trouble. Also, we say goodbye to Pete. In other words, nothing we cared about happened in this episode. COVENANTThis is STILL arguably the best season finale the show has ever done. It's almost brilliant. The episode begins with a hot naked chick knocking on the Kent's front door. She says her name is Kara, but we quickly realize it's not THE Kara because she talks about mating with Clark and keeping the Kryptonian race alive. Yeah...that's just creepy. She also wants Clark to visit the caves where their is a portal that'll transport them to another world. Clark refuses because he's busy with other stuff like being a witness at Lionel's trial and saying goodbye to Lana as she heads to Paris. But, Kara warns Clark that he's wasting his time because his friends with either betray or leave him. And...she's right. Clark, through Lionel, discovers that Lex has never stopped investigating him and finds his "secret" room. Then, he also learns that Lex and Lana are getting a little "too friendly." And, I'll get to Chloe later. So, as all this is occurring, Lionel is convicted but still has a few tricks up his sleeves left. The episode ends with him getting a haircut as Chloe is killed, Lex is poisoned, and Martha sees weird Kryptonian symbols on the farm's crops. It's STILL my favorite moment in the show's history: Now, back to Clark. He goes through the portal and finds himself in some frozen state as Jor-El says, "and, now, son, you shall be reborn." I interpreted that differently in 2004: Oh, wow. LOL. Let's see what else was said at the time: OVERALL, I have mixed feelings about season 3. On one hand, it was consistantly good. On the other hand, it was a step down from season 2 since it didn't have as many standout episodes. As much as I love Covenant, season 2's Red, Insurgence, and Rosetta were better.

Ha! CRUSADEThis was a surprisingly weak premiere. Now, granted, Clark flying was a series highlight, Erica Durance kicked butt from the getgo, and we saw Kristin Kreuk naked and sweaty. But, storywise, it felt lacking. I just felt like nothing really happened. GONEThis episode features my most favorite guilty pleasure moment on the show. The infamous shower scene. I really love the chemistry between Tom Welling and Erica Durance in this episode. Now that we're in season 10 and Lois & Clark are officially an item it's interesting to re-visit how it all began. It's interesting because nothing really changed. They were awesome from the getgo. Gough & Millar simply dropped the ball by continuing to pursue that Lana romance. Season 3 should have been the end of Clark and Lana. Now, of course, I understand that Lana needed to return so Clark could finally realize that he found someone else...but we all know that didn't happen. A shame, really. Especially since it ruins that discussion that Clark and Lana had about Lois in the cave. THE VAULTThat made me laugh for some reason. LOL.

FACADE On tonight's episode of Smallville 90210, Clark Kent joins the football team, Lois Lane is forced to attend high school, and a plastic surgery freak wrecks havoc.
DEVOTED On tonight's episode of Smallville 90210, football hunk Clark Kent gets it on with a cheerleader, Chloe Sullivan embarrasses herself, and Lois Lane finally leaves high school.
Although, I loved the chemistry between Lois & Clark. They really should have continued on this route instead of going back to the Lana nonsense.
RUN This is one of my favorite episodes and a top 10 contender for sure! The Flash guest stars as a good kid who's hanging with the wrong crowd. But, most importantly, Clark realizes that he should have some fun with his powers. The friendly speed race at the end was fantastic. Kudos, Smallville. Kudos.
TRANSFERENCE This episode was AWESOME! Clark and Lionel switch bodies and it was hilarious. I think I like Lionel-Clark more than Red-K-Clark.

JINXHoly s--t, it's Mr. Mxyzptlk. SO, YOU'LL PAY ME THAT AMOUNT TO STRIP?SPELLOMG, Lana is a witch. Did they buy that outfit at Party City? BOUNDThis is a filler episode, but at the same time it isn't. The plot is some nonsense of an ex-flame getting revenge on Lex. But the sub-plots make a lot of progress. Here, we're introduced to the "good guy" Lionel who makes an effort to help/save Lex. We're also introduced to Jason's mother who'll play a bigger role later in the season. SCARE"Good guy" Lionel gets mysteriously out of jail as Lex almost kills the entire town as an experiment in LuthorCorp goes the wrong way. It's an interesting episode with some cool moments, but ultimately rather forgettable. UNSAFETonight, on a special episode of Smallville, Lana feels the pressure to have sex with Jason, Chloe reveals how she lost her virginity to Jimmy Olsen, and Clark Kent gets...married in Vegas!!! This episode features the return of Alicia which is pretty cool and she's gonna stick around for more. That's also pretty cool. But this episode was also rather cheesy. It doesn't help when it ends with a PSA featuring Allison Mack talking about teen pregnancies. OVERALL, I know I'm only half-way through season 4, but I've been underwhelmed. I don't like any of these storylines involving witches and Kryptonian stones and Lionel the good guy and all that nonsense. This might just end up as my second LEAST favorite season. Which is sad considering how much I enjoyed Crusade, Gone, Devoted, Run, and Transference. This is like season one. Some great stand-alone episodes, but a crappy overall season.

PARIAH Another of Clark's short-term girlfriends die. It was wasted potential. Alicia or even the werewolve girl from season 2 could have been the Gwen Stacy of the series.
RECRUIT In season 4 they spent a lot of time exploring Clark's adventures as a HS football star. It was a fun journey that came to an end here. The whole storyline was handled nicely. Good job, Gough & Millar. I know I don't say that often. This episode also features an early role for Amanda Crew.
KRYPTO Krypto the Superdog guest stars. Actually, no, it isn't really Krypto. Cute episode nonetheless.
SACRED Lana the Witch returns. :sleepy:
LUCY Peyton List makes her first appearence as Lucy Lane. And the world of television has never been the same since. She deserves a spot at the Hall of Fame for her hotness. This chick rivals Erica Durance and that isn't easy to do.
ONYX OMG, this episode was amazing! My favorite Lex Luthor episode EVER! People are cheering about Michael Rosenbaum returning. Well, what better way to celebrate than to re-watch this episode! Seriously, re-watch it. It's brilliant. Top 10, for sure. Maybe even Top 5.
SPIRIT Every season of Smallville has an episode where Erica Durance earns her paycheck. This was the one for season 4. That prom dress...holy moly. HOWEVER, this episode is also the one that ruins the next three seasons of Smallville. The most impressive thing about season 4 is that Clark and Lana spent the bulk of it seperated. Lois & Clark are THE couple of the season. They spent most of the season bickering while also showing hints of attraction. It was the perfect set-up for a long courtship. But...Gough & Millar, being the idiots that they are, ruined it by making Lana a love interest again. When Clark and Lana are dancing at the prom I felt like throwing my shoe at the television.
BLANK Clark forgets his memory and Chloe, who already knows his secret, helps him go after the meteor freak who caused it. It was a fun episode for Chloe to discover all of Clark's abilities. I also liked her joke of pre-mature combustion.
AGELESS Clark and Lana find a second-generation meteor freak who's aging at a rabid speed. Meanwhile, Evil Lionel makes his big return. Decent episode, to say the least.

FOREVER Like season 3, the second-to-last episode was very underwhelming. Basically, some kid can't accept that high school is over so he kidnaps some students and locks them in a recreation of Smallville High. It was an interesting idea, but not very well executed. The highlight of the episode was the Luthors vs. Teagues. One thing about this episode did standout to me. Pete, while incredibly useless, did serve a purpose. He was Clark's only true male friend. It was weird watching the last scene of Clark, Lana, and Chloe paying their respects to 4 years of high school and realizing that Clark is always hanging around two chicks he has never slept with. Even though both of them have a crush on him. And, then of course, there's Lois who's living at his house. It's kind of depressing really.
COMMENCEMENT It wouldn't be Smallville if there wasn't a meteor shower in the middle of graduation. The interesting thing about this episode is that something crazy is happening to everyone except Clark. The town is experiencing its second meteor shower in only 16 years, Lana killed Genevieve, the Kents are attacked by Jason, Lionel becomes a Kryptonian vessel, Lex gets closer to the truth, and so does Chloe. Meanwhile, Clark very quickly gathers all the stones and unleashes the Fortress. You'd think he could have taken care of this a lot sooner. It's a pretty awesome finale and I like that it's the longest episode they've done. It's close to an hour as opposed to the standard 40-45 minutes. This was as a result of the infamous Batman Begins preview. Some of you may recall that the episode aired in a 90-minute timeslot that devoted its last 10-15 minutes to a preview of Nolan's first bat flick. But, anyway, as awesome as the finale was, I can't help but feel that it was unneccessary. Clark has made his fair share of mistakes, but you'd think after the trouble he caused in season 2 he wouldn't ignore Jor-El so much.
OVERALL, seaon 4 was a bit of a letdown. I wasn't too crazy about any of the storylines and the reunion of Clark & Lana is a disappointment. The only real highlight of the season was Lois Lane. Erica Durance has been fantastic since day one and this season they gave her a lot of time to develop a relationship with Clark. It's just too bad that they ruined it at the last moment with Lana.
THE HIGH SCHOOL YEARS I'm now done with Clark's high school years. As Tornado once pointed out, it does feel like a completely different show. These were the years where the title, Smallville, actually made sense. Gough & Millar also made their least amount of mistakes here. As bad as things got there was always room for repair. That wasn't the case once we got to season 7. Which is a shame considering how hard the new showrunners have been trying to make a great show. I think when it's all said and done, it's the high school years that people will fondly look back on.

Are you writing these from memory or are you pulling them from ComingSoon? If these are from memory, kudos to you. I definitely don't remember enough about every episode to write these up. They'd all be a sentence or two at best unless it was a particularly memorable week.
I don't own any of the DVD's/Blu-ray's anymore as I downsized a year or so ago, so I don't think I'll ever have the chance to dive back into this show... unless it shows up on Netflix someday.

Are you writing these from memory or are you pulling them from ComingSoon? I'm archiving the stuff I wrote in the Smallville thread. I'll post seasons 5 thru 10 over the next few days and archive some of your reviews and rankings in the process. For whatever reason, you never posted anything about the first 4 seasons except for general statements. It airs on TNT in the after hours. If you ever have space in your DVR you can record a few episodes.

Yeah, when I first joined ComingSoon I tended to stick to the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars forums. It wasn't until after Episode III came out (May 2005) that I drifted into other forums. That's about the time I probably started showing up in the Smallville thread, give or take a few months.

ARRIVAL You know it's a new era for the show when Clark is in the Fortress, Smallville is getting attacked by Kryptonians, and Brainiac makes his debut. This was an important episode for me because it's the one that got me back into the show. I had watched the season 4 finale because of the Batman Begins preview and was intrigued enough to check out the season 5 premiere. It got me hooked and I have been a consistant viewer ever since. I was just happy that the show was getting closer to Superman and the mythology.
That being said, this episode does have its flaws. The ending was incredibly anti-climatic. I think it was stupid how Clark lost his powers and wasn't concerned that he left Chloe at some hospital in the Arctic. It was even dumber that he didn't return to the Fortress on time. Lana is gonna live, dude. She's been thrown across a room a million times before.
In a way, this premiere signaled a promising new era for the show, but it also indicated that things were gonna be prolonged more than needed. They could have easily ended the show in this season. All Clark needed to do was, you know, train in the damn Fortress.
Anyway, this is what I wrote back then:

MORTAL Three important things happen in this episode. One, Chloe shows some cleavage. Two, Clark beats up Lex then ends the friendship. And, three, Clark finally gets his d--k wet. Other than that, this was a largely forgettable episode.

HIDDEN This episode was bulls--t. It features two things I always hated about this show. One, Jor-El being a jackass. And, two, Clark being an idiot. You'd think after all the mess he caused in the season 2 finale he would haved learned his lesson. So, not only is Clark responsible for the death of his unborn sibling, but of Jonathan Kent as well? They really crossed the line here.
Anyway, let's see what I said back then:
Okay. Let's see what Tornado said back then:
Okay.
Thank you.

AQUA So, apparently, this episode takes place 3 months later because Clark is already in college and Brainiac somehow managed to get a teaching position. But none of that matters because the important thing is that Erica Durance is in a bikini - TWICE. Aquaman also shows up in this episode, but he isn't as cool as The Flash in season 4.
This is what I said back then:

THIRST In the post-Jeph Loeb world, Steven S. DeKnight was possibly the best writer on the show. Although his track record was very hit or miss. For every awesome episode there was a pretty bad one. So, it's interesting to watch an episode like Thirst where we get both. Here, Brainiac really shines for the first time and his interactions with Lex Luthor are highlights. But, sadly, that was the sub-plot. The main plot involved Lana joining a sorority and becoming a vampire. It was meant to be a fun Halloween episode, but it comes across more silly than anything else. We are also reminded of the previous season where Lana was a witch. It's quite clear at this point that the producers and writers don't know what to do with Lana anymore. Another thing that bothered me is that the episode contributes to season 5's disorganized timeline. In the episode the sorority has a Halloween party. So, wait, it's already late October? How did we get here so quickly when only five episodes ago it was June? I raised an eyebrow in the previous episode (Aqua) when Clark was suddenly starting school. It could have been argued that he started college in the summer. Especially since that episode seemed to take place in the summer with everyone partying at the lake like if it was still vacation. But that clearly doesn't seem to be the case.
EXPOSED A lot of things happen in this episode including a Dukes of Hazzard reunion, the beginning of the Jonathan vs Lex senator race, and Chloe's first byline at the Daily Planet. But none of that matters because Erica Durance was in a bikini. In all seriousness though, this episode did have one other highlight, it put Chloe in her place. She may have gotten a byline, but Lois was the one doing all the heavy lifting. It was a nice foreshadowing of future events where Lois will be the badass reporter and Chloe will...not.

SPLINTER This is a strange episode. It's good, but also rather pointless. It's an episode that would have made more sense in season one or two. But, anyway, it basically involves Clark being exposed to silver kryptonite and losing his mind. At the end he discovers that Professor Fine is from Krypton.
SOLITUDE This is the big episode where Professor Fine reveals that he is Brainiac and attempts to free Zod. Then, there's an okay-ish fight scene in the Fortress. I liked the episode, but also felt that they dropped the ball. They should have milked the Milton Fine character a bit longer. For starters, I've always found it disappointing that they had Clark drop out of college. It was their opportunity to allow Clark to become a man without it be ridiculous that he hasn't become a SUPERman. Most of us would agree that this show could have ended in season 7 or 8 or even sooner. But if they had kept Clark in college, 10 seasons would have made sense and even run more smoothly. Oh, well. Another screw-up by Gough & Millar.
LEXMAS This episode is a little dumb to be honest. Lex is shot and falls into a coma where he imagines a world in which he is middle class, married to Lana, and has a son. Then, Lana dies giving birth to his second child and he couldn't do anything because he lacked the money and power to do so. Then he awakens and decides to become evil. Um...okay? I don't see why being rich and powerful means you have to be evil as well.
FANATIC I'm not a big fan of the Senator storyline. It's rather pointless and makes very little sense. For starters, how does a politicall inexperienced guy like Jonathan Kent become a candidate? You're telling me there aren't other people with experience and money who wouldn't want the gig? I understand that his HS pal was the previous Senator, but so what? I'm sure there was plenty of people waiting in the sidelines for him to leave. Secondly, the fact that Jonathan doesn't accept donations is ridiculous. The average politican isn't a multi-millionaire with endless money to run a campaign. They rely on fundraisers. I don't know how he became Lex Luthor's main rival with virtually no cash. I know that they needed to kill off Jonathan Kent, but they could have found other ways to do it.
Here's what I said back then:
I guess back then I was distracted by the sub-plot involving Clark and Lana. So, I'll comment on that now. On one hand, it's funny that Lana is so horny. "We haven't had sex since you rose from the dead...in case you haven't noticed." That s--t made me laugh. I won't lie. But this was the wrong episode to address the issue. Jonathan is getting beat up and almost assassinated and Clark is too busy worrying if he can bang Lana or not. That's not the best decision making by the writers. Also, why are Clark and Chloe so awkward when discussing sex? They're college kids - inexperienced college kids - but college kids nonetheless. No reason to beat around the bush. And why isn't Chloe getting laid? Clark is taken. Move on. She's in college. She's working at the Daily Planet. You're telling me that there's no one worthy? Or, better yet, why isn't Lois getting laid? It's amazing. For a WB (now CW) show it sure lacked a lot of sex.

LOCKDOWN
Here's what I said back then:
My opinion is pretty much the same. Although, now I will add that the panic room SHOULD have had a phone in it. It sort of defeats the purpose if you can't call for help. You're just a sitting duck till someone comes for help.
RECKONING This is the BIG season 5 episode. The BIG 100th episode. The BIG episode where Jonathan Kent dies. And it's a BIG piece of s--t. Let's start with the obvious. Clark Kent is very self-centered. It's election day. It's his father's big day. And does he care? Nope. He's too busy worrying about Lana. The guy even proposes to her. Good Lord, man. Do you ALWAYS have to be the center of attention. He's like a damn child. The other thing that bothers me...and this is a BIG one...is that it finished the super annoying and cringe-worthy storyline that happened in season 3. Jor-El pretty much kills Jonathan Kent. The man was a ticking time bomb for three years. I never understood why they had to make Jor-El such a jackass on this show. It was dumb and pointless. And, Jonathan Kent's death was handled incorrectly. I would have preferred if he had just died from natural causes. It could have been Clark's big reminder that no matter how powerful he is he can't save everyone. He can't be a hero by saving lives. He can only be a hero by inspiring others. Instead, Jonathan Kent's death is just another guilt for him. Gough & Millar sure did a wonderful job of turning Superman into an angsty character. For a second, you'd think you were watching Spider-Man.
THOUGHTS ON SEASON 5 Re-watching season 5 has been a different experience for me. This was the first FULL season I watched. During seasons 1 thru 4, I was just a casual viewer. So, re-visiting those seasons was just a way for me to be reminded of them and also watch episodes I missed. With season 5, I had already seen it all (or atleast most of it) and already had formed an opinion on it. At the time, I was pleased that the show was heading closer to the Superman mythology, but was disappointed by how things were handled. 5-6 years later, I'm even more disappointed. Especially now that I can see the big picture. I hate to say this, and Tornado will be shocked to read it, but season 5 is battling season 1 for the worst season of Smallville. It's that bad. And, yes, I do feel like it's worse that season 7. I re-watched season 7 back in the summer (when I first got HDNet) and it's really not that bad of a season. It's mis-guided, but not bad. Season 5 is both bad and mis-guided.
VENGEANCE This was an interesting episode. Clark joins the dark side for a brief moment and that chick who played Acrata was pretty hot. She doesn't show up again, right? Sucks. I like her more than Black Canary. My only problem with this episode was that Clark dropped out of college. That has always been one of my biggest criticisms. Clark should have stayed in college for seasons 5 thru 8. That way it would have made more sense for this show to last 10 years.
TOMB
Here's what I said back then:
Yeah, that's pretty much how I still feel.
CYBORG Watching this episode I thought of two things. One, "oh, s--t, Chloe is showing cleavage." And two, where exactly is this season going? Brainiac is out of the picture for a while and the senate race is over. The only running plot at the moment is Jor-El using Lionel as a vessel and the relationship between Martha and Lionel. Both which are pretty minor. I know Brainiac re-appears in the next episode, but as I can recall, he doesn't do anything major till the last two episodes. So, this season was very filler-esque.
HYPNOTIC This is the BIG episode where Clark and Lana break-up for the 100th time. It's also the episode where Clark throws Lex across the room and Lex attributes the super strength to Clark being hyptonized. How stupid can he be? Brainiac also returns after being gone for 7 friggin episodes. And he doesn't really do anything. What a waste.
Anyway, this is what I said back then:
