I have many issues with the movie, which I'll list and discuss when ya'll ain't running away from spoilers. My biggest issue of all is the plot. It's boring. It's well executed but it's boring. And all the ways these characters meet felt forced. The backstory is A LOT more interesting and THAT should have been the movie. But of course, Disney is making a million Star Wars movies and they'll probably do a prequel to episode 7 in the 2020's. Suddenly, I'm nervous about Disney's plans for this franchise.

I have some unformed thoughts to get off my chest, not even going to bother trying to avoid spoilers: First I want to make it clear: I like this movie, for the most part. ***1/2 stars. If I come off like a hater it's just because I feel the need to be the adult in the room and deflate hyperbole.
I guess the over-arching gripe with the movie is that it lacks vision. Say what you will about the prequels but for all their problems they were trying to expand the universe and give us something new. This movie on the other hand is really content to put some modern polish on the old movies... particularly A New Hope which this thing echos really heavily.. like to the point where it almost felt like what Star Trek Into Darkness did to The Wrath of Khan and that was kind of weird.
Most of the rest of my gripes could be classified as nitpicks of varying degrees. None of these are dealbreakers and I don't want to give the impression that these detracted from the movie all that much they did bug me a little.
Firstly, someone needs to stop letting J.J. Abrams design non-humanoid aliens because he's really bad at it. Those aliens that were loose on Millennium Falcon kind of sucked and that whole sequence was not the movie at its best.
Next, coincidence plays way too big a role in this movie. We're really supposed to believe that the Millennium Falcon just happened to be waiting on the same planet that Rey (she's supposed to be Luke's daughter or something right?) and she just happens to be the one who finds the droid with the map to Luke and just happens to find herself on the Falcon as she escapes and Solo just happens to be searching for the Falcoln in time to find her.... sorry no. I get that they're probably trying to suggest that the force is setting things in motion or something but there's a certain point where suspension of disbelief gets broken and this movie gets way to close to it.
Some of the dialogue, especially for the Finn seemed dangerously close to the kind of self-aware snark that I hate. "Droid please" No.
I also thought it was kind of bullshit that Finn and Rey were able to hold their own against Kylo Ren at the end. That Finn, who has no force powers, could even put up a fight was a stretch but I could live with that given how quickly he was dispatched. Rey, someone who's completely untrained in whatever force powers she had and has had no fencing lessons, is able to defeat a Sith Lord is really stupid. Having the force with you is not supposed to make you a natural super-soldier, it's supposed to require a ton of training. Luke was more trained than she was when he went up against Vader he totally got his ass kicked. I hate to "go there" but I worry that everyone was so excited to make a "Strong Female Character" that they went too far too fast and robbed the character of the chance to gradually grow into her powers over the course of the new trilogy. Also, now that it's been established that Kylo Ren fucking sucks at being a Sith he's going to be pretty diminished for future movies. Oh, and that was some amazingly bad luck that the tectonic shifts managed to separate the two before Rey could finish him.
All that negativity out of the way, there is a lot I like about this movie. Up until he gets his ass kicked by a girl (I kid) Kylo Ren is a really cool villain and an interesting successor to Vader. Adam Driver turned out to be an inspired casting choice and his costume was pretty dope. Most of the rest of The First Order seemed like a good update of the Empire too. Liked the Domhnall Gleeson general, liked Captain Phasma (even if she didn't have a ton to do and was dispatched a little too easily), maybe wasn't so crazy about that Snoke guy but they might have time to improve him in future movies.
On the good guys side I thought Rey and Finn were pretty good new characters even if they were pretty blatantly meant to be Luke Skywalker and Han Solo surrogates respectively. Oscar Isaac and Max Von Sydow were kind of wasted but I did like that Lupita Nyong'o alien thing, would like to see more of her in the sequels. As for the Original Trilogy cast, they did a pretty admirable job slipping into their old roles. Kind of a shame that Mark Hamill was only in the movie for thirty seconds... almost wish they hadn't bothered with the cameo and just held off on him until the next movie. Fisher and Ford were both pretty good... C3PO and R2-D2 were both just kind of there. Not sure what they're going to do with Chewbaca without Han... almost kind of wish they had both "gone out" together.
Oh, also I was really relieved to see that "Episode VII" was still used in the opening scroll... and the idea of a cross-guard on a lightsaber is still stupid.
So yeah, overall I liked the movie... but it's also kind of just another summer blockbuster to me. The original movies were probably also just kind of summer blockbusters but they had the benefit of coming out before every other summer blockbuster was trying to be "the next Star Wars." I had fun with the movie, but I have fun with a lot of movies and I think that once people get over the novelty of seeing all the stuff they like from the older movies they're kind of going to come back to earth on this thing because it's definately not perfect. But again, I don't want to overplay my complaints, this is a good movie. ***1/2

I kinda wish someone had spoiled Luke Skywalker for me. I mean, if you had told me he was only going to be in it for 20 seconds at the end of the movie, it would have alleviated some of the anticipation or curious wonderment about him being on the DL, that won't really be delivered upon until the sequels. Once we have the other films to watch (if they're good of course), it won't be a big deal, but for right now it was pretty disappointing.

Well As I look at it Rey still needs looking after and there is no one more loyal then Chewbacca. So my guess is Chewy will be in episode 8 watching over her while with Luke. I have this one question does it feel like a star wars movie and can you tell Lucas didnt make it. I for one did. I also hear allot flack about Finn was a coward in this movie. Yes he did make mistakes but he doesnt know who he is even since he basically was just a number and we as of yet dont know if he is not Force sensative. Kylo Ren just has used a Light Saber longer.

Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens(12/17/2015)
Warning: This is a no-holds-barred spoiler-filled review that is primarily meant for people who’ve seen the film.
Just about anyone who wasn’t already an adult in 1977 probably brings a certain amount of baggage to anything related to the international phenomenon that is the Star Wars brand. When I was a kid I was certainly nuts for Star Wars. I thought they were pretty much the best movies ever, I read a bunch of the Star Wars books, I played a bunch of Star Wars video games, and I even subscribed to a damn Star Wars fan magazine. I also really liked the prequels, which started coming out when I was eleven and was right in that target market that Lucas was aiming for. Over time I certainly started to see the many flaws that bring those movies down but I don’t think they’re worthless and given their place in my childhood I can’t really get too mad at them. Hell, I don’t even get too animated with rage by George Lucas’ Special Edition silliness. If I’ve gotten disillusioned at all by the franchise it really has nothing to do with anything that Lucas ever did everything to do with the fact that I just sort of grew up and moved on to other better things. I certainly still like the old Star Wars movies but that’s all they are to me: movies. They’re well well-oiled entertainments with characters and elements that have rightly become iconic but at the end of the day they’re simplistic action movies for twelve year olds. There’s nothing wrong with that but that’s an accomplishment that needs to be kept in perspective. That outlook has pretty much informed who I’ve reacted to the news that Star Wars was coming back sans-Lucas. I haven’t been expecting greatness from them but maybe they’ll make for some cool action movies.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which does have the “Episode VII” moniker in its opening scroll, appears to be set thirty years after the end of the original trilogy and the state of the galaxy suggests that the hard won victory at the end of the original trilogy didn’t lead to the intergalactic happy ending we all thought it did. A new evil army calling themselves The First Order have emerged styling themselves after the Empire from the original trilogy and are apparently being led by an elusive Palpatine-like figure calling himself Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) who has taken a sith apprentice named Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). As the film begins this First Order is searching for Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) who has begun living in Yoda-like seclusion in the wake of some failed attempts to restore the Jedi order. The First Order wants to find him and kill him but their enemies, The Resistance, are hoping that if they find him he could help them bring an end to The First Order’s reign of terror. That search leads them to the desert planet Jakku where a pilot named Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac) has found a map to Skywalker and hidden it in a droid called BB-8. He soon exists and the movie is taken over by Finn (John Boyega), a former stormtrooper who has a crisis of conscience and decides to betray the First Order and deliver the map to the Reistance. Along the way he encounters a scavenger named Rey (Daisy Ridley) on Jakku who helps him escape. Soon enough they meet a certain smuggler (Harrison Ford) and his furry companion (Peter Mayhew) and before long they are embroiled in intergalactic strife.
It is a bit disheartening to know that the hard won victory at the end of Return of the Jedi didn’t really last but that is perhaps a fitting state of affairs for the times we live in. If the Obama years have taught us anything it’s that it takes more than one victory to make hope and change happen, it’s something that requires unending vigilance and dogged defending. But let’s be honest, the real reason that the galaxy has been thrown back into a civil war between a Rebel like “resistance” taking on an Empire-like “First Order” is because this movie really wants re-capture the original trilogy whether or not the reasons make sense. Not only are the factions echoes of the old movies but most of the characters are too. Finn is a wisecracking leather jacket wearing rogue who is plainly supposed to be a Han Solo stand-in despite having a background that would not seem to create such a personality. Rey is a young person who grew up on a desert planet but finds herself reluctantly embroiled in a civil war because of force powers that were more than likely given to her because she is more than likely the spawn of a famous Jedi: clearly she’s the new trilogy’s Luke Skywalker. And then the film’s villain is a dark Jedi who walks around in black, has a helmet which gives him a distorted voice, and takes orders from a mysterious cloaked schemer who’s in charge of the faction he’s a pawn for. It’s a little shameless. Say what you will about the prequels but there’s no denying that they tried a lot harder to expand this universe and do new things rather than simply polish the old movies up for a new generation of special effects.
Honestly I can’t blame the movie too much for wanting to recreate the superficial aspects of what worked before and for the most part the new characters work quite well despite their unoriginality. What I can’t forgive so easily is the way that the film heavily echoes the basic story structure and series of events of A New Hope to the point where it almost feels like a remake. Both movies begin with a droid carrying a secret macguffin landing on a backwater desert planet to escape evil pursuers, being found by a local who happens to be strong in the force who opts to take that droid to the good guys while being escorted by an older guide and after running into complications along the way they end up re-uniting with the good guys just in time to save them from a big planet destroying super weapon after witnessing their older guide being murdered in dramatic fashion. It’s pretty shameless and frankly it kind of reminded me of J.J. Abrams’ misguided decision to recreate entire scenes from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in his Star Trek Into Darkness. This not only feels odd and lazy but also kind of robs the film of some suspense. For instance, that tense scene where Han Solo faces off with Kylo Ren is really undercut because you know exactly where its going once you piece together that it’s basically going to be an echo of Obi-Wan’s faceoff against Darth Vader in the original movie. I suppose we’re supposed to assume that “the force” has been interceding in events and repeating cycles of conflict and I suppose that’s also supposed to be the explanation for the various wild coincidences that set the movie into motion, but there are limits to how much the audience can accept that and this movie get perilously close to going over that line.
There are other gripes I have with the movie like a handful of questionable lines, the way it plays into certain moments of fan-service, and the way certain characters suddenly become lightsaber savants without any training, but I fear that if I spend too much time outlining my various nitpicks I would mistakenly give off the impression that I really dislike this movie, which I very decidedly do not so let’s shift to the positive. This movie’s biggest asset is actually probably its cast. Star Wars characters have never really been particularly rich, they’re more like personalities than truly fleshed out characters and the fact that the performances in the prequels were so wooden were a big part of why those movies fell so flat. Take the new Finn character. On the page there really isn’t a lot there. The fact that he’s a former stormtrooper who chose to go against the training that had been ingrained in him from birth is an idea that had a lot of potential but the movie doesn’t do much with it. It’s never made clear how someone raised in that environment could develop a conscience and the movie quickly forgets that he as this dark backstory and just makes him a generic rogue. And yet, because John Boyega is so damn charming it just works and you don’t really think about any of that. Then there’s the Rey character, who’s a complete cipher seemingly without a past and without a ton of personality traits besides toughness and independence, but Daisy Ridley does make it work onscreen through sheer chutzpa. My favorite new character though is probably the villain Kylo Ren and not just because he looks really cool in that black getup. The idea of making this villain the estranged son of Han and Leia was both interesting on its face and also a clever way to explain why Han and Leia aren’t living happily in domestic tranquility. I also thought that Adam Driver was a really inspired casting decision both because his vocal sylings work great in that Vader tone of voice and also because it emphasized that beneath the mask this was a confused young man rather than some kind of intrinsically evil monster.
You’ll notice that for as long as I’ve been talking about this I’ve hardly said anything about the film’s action, visual effects, or spectacle. That is in part because that isn’t really the focus of the film and in part because they aren’t necessarily as remarkable as you might think. That’s not to say that the special effects here are bad at all, quite the contrary, no expense was spared and this looks as good as any blockbuster should in 2015 but it doesn’t necessarily push the envelope in that regard. The original Star War was like nothing audiences had seen before, it was a huge leap forward and it shaped the way movies were made. For all its creative failures people forget that The Phantom Menace was also a huge leap forward in the realm of special effects, possibly too much of one. It could be argued that part of the problem with that prequel trilogy was that it was trying so hard to blow people’s minds with all the CGI that it lost track of everything else. In making this new film J.J. Abrams seems to have intentionally gone in the other direction and focused entirely on a human level while keeping the effects par for the course. Given one or the other I certainly would like plot and story rather than technical prowess of course but maybe it would have been cool if we could get both?
Honestly though, maybe it was inevitable that this was never going to wow audiences in the same way that the older movies did. In the thirty eight years since Star Wars hit theaters damn near every summer blockbuster has been trying to be “the next Star Wars” with varying degrees of success. When that becomes the norm it is maybe inevitable that when the real McCoy comes along it’s going to seem less like an earth shattering event and more like an above average example of the kind of effects spectacle that Hollywood has been giving us pretty regularly and that’s kind of where I am on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. A lot of people are coming out of it saying things like “oh my god it made me feel like I was a kid again” but I’m just not feeling it and I suspect that once a lot of people get over the thrill of seeing all the stuff from their favorite series presented with modern visual effects they’re also going to sort of come back down to Earth on this one. This is a good movie, it really is and if anything it exceeded the rather reasonable expectations I went into it with but at the end of the day it’s just a popcorn flick and not necessarily an amazing one.

Now we know why Rian Johnson is writing and Directing next two. I had my concerns when they told george too take his ideas and go home. Its like i said its a good movie like Star trek was just like star trek it was not A Star Trek feeling movie and JJ did it too Star Wars. I like Rey and Finn. And Captain Phasem had potential but she is just a back ground flower or statue. I gave the movie 8-10 which is what gave revenge of the sith. But Force Awakens just does not have that star wars magic. Even as bad as the prequels are hailed they felt like it was star wars. Maybe JJ should have dressed in Flannel to have that Magic. Star Wars should be Great not Just Good if get what I mean.

Regarding how Finn and Rey were able to fight off Kylo Ren...the dude had been shot and looked to be bleeding pretty badly. Anyway, I feel similar to Drac. I had a lot of fun with this film and there's a lot to like, but the plot is a retread and this doesn't really offer anything new.

DraculaNo. No. No. John Boyega is C-3PO, BB-8 is R2D2 and Oscar Issac is Han Solo. Wait for Episode 8, you'll see I'm right.

Oscar Issac was obviously set up to be the Han Solo stand in, but then he disappeared from the movie and passed the torch, err... jacket... on to Boyega and instead decided to be the Wedge of the movie.

Anyone else have a disappointing selection of trailers? I was surprised. The 2D print I saw had Civil War, Star Trek Beyond, some crappy movie called "The 5th Wave", and three or four family/kids films. Apparently they think only families go to 2D showings.
I guess that's something else to look forward to in the IMAX version.

No. While Daisy Ridley is doing her thing, Oscar Issac and John Boyega have to keep fighting The First Order. It's gonna be like Empire where the characters are split up during most of the running time. Oscar Issac will clearly be Han Solo in that situation. three or four family/kids films. Zootopia is a hit with people over here.

People over at IMDB kept saying how bad the trailer was for The Justin Lin Directed Start Trek Teaser and I thought it looked cool but like all teaser s it was fast and Furious. Which Teaser trailers seldom explain anything for thats 2nd trailer job which is usually best movie trailer for that project.
Anyways my Trailers for the movie was Independance Day 2, Tarzan, Batman vs Superman Dooms Day Trailer, and The Hateful 8 My theator usually goes by studio project trailers so i expected disney trailers but guess our theator ordered the big movie trailer package.

Overall, I enjoyed The Force Awakens. It has a great balance of action and quality humor, and the performances from everyone involved are spot on. The first viewing on Thursday was good, but the second on Friday was significantly better. I suppose that's because by that time I was able to enjoy it without worrying that something stupid was going to happen. As much as I like The Force Awakens, it's not without it's flaws. The first one should be a surprise to no one who's seen the Star Trek movies from JJ Abrams. The man does not understand that space is REALLY BIG, and that what happens in one star system can't affect another for years. A neighboring star going supernova cannot destroy Romulus before Spock can arrive, and mega-lasers from Starkiller base cannot blast planets in another star system to bits. Now, to be fair to JJA, Emperor Lucas also didn't have a firm grasp on the size of the universe during the Original Trilogy. The travels of the Millennium Falcon during The Empire Strikes Back while the hyperdrive wasn't working don't stand up to close scrutiny, either.
Edit- Okay, so having gone to see it again today (in IMAX 3D this time) I picked up on the one line in the movie that's supposed to explain away how the mega-laser can destroy planets in other star systems. The recon pilot Snap states that the weapon's blast travels at "hyper-light" speed. Okay, that's all well and good, but this is a movie and not a book. Show us, don't tell us. Strangely enough, I saw this very thing done in a movie recently. I can't find a clip, but I'll try and put one up if I can later.
I could try and pen a more elaborate critique, but I'm not going to. The words of John Scalzi sum up my ultimate opinion on The Force Awakens perfectly. Star Wars is that friend of yours who you haven’t seen in a while, who was in a long-term relationship where everything was cool for a while and then things just plain went to hell, and the last time you saw them, they’d kind of hit the bottom. Now you’re seeing them again for the first time in years and before they show up you’re humming a little mantra that goes please please please please don’t let this be awkward and weird like it was the last time we saw each other.
And then they show up! And they look great. They sound great. You talk to them and slip into the groove with them, and they catch you up on what’s been going on in their life, including their new relationship with this fab-sounding person who seems to be doing good things for them. And you suddenly realize that for the first time in years your friend actually seems happy. They’re not exactly their old self again — who ever is, after all those years? — but the things you always loved about them are there once more, and you’re so happy to see them happy again that you almost want to cry.
So, yeah: If you’re a Star Wars fan, that’s how you’re going to feel about The Force Awakens.

My feeling is Harrison always did enough acting to make it more believable but I never viewed Star Wars as a movie that must be factually correct. I as a kid thought Vader was cool and loved the droids. I was not worried about a science lesson in these movies. I came for the characters space battles and lightsaber duels

I'll post my full thoughts later but as Neverending said in another post we're probably on the same page and I agree with just about everything Drac said. It's certainly an entertaining movie, I had a great time from start to finish but that's just one of its problems. It goes and doesn't stop. After a while its luster wore off and it focused more on the bells and whistles rather than the gravity of what was going on (the end battle is very anticlimactic). Drac is right, I think people will come back to reality on this one and admit that it's an entertaining, fun popcorn movie that doesn't reach the heights of the franchise. Just because it's a Star Wars movie doesn't mean it should get more credit than it deserves.

My belief is by trailers and over all good will in movies think these 7 Movies will be Best Out Of The Crop Do Out.
7 Tarzan- The Trailer was best i have seen too any film Yet.
6 Star Trek Beyond- Not Sure why but just have a good feeling with Lin at the helm.
5 Kung Fu Panda 2 Even If Its Got A January Release.
4 Independence Day 2
3 Deadpool.
2 X-Men Apocolypse
1 Rogue One- Just Because It could be better then Episode 7. Simply Because We Will Likely Get Mean Vader In a Movie.
I left off the big 3 comic movies but to be honest here I see Civil War, Superman vs Batman and Suicide Squad as empty cash cows at best with no substance.

Okay. Dracula and Fanible saw it on Thursday. Jibbs, PG Cooper, SnoBorderZero and Wyldstaar saw it on Friday. Doomsday saw it today. So we're just waiting on IanTheCool , PhantomKnight and Deexan so we can finally discuss this movie openly.

Saw it tonight. Man oh man, did I like this movie a lot. It had the same simple, straightforward and adventurous tone that made A New Hope so great, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a great movie. I'm sitting with Drac at 3 1/2 stars most likely, but I'll say this: I can't wait to see it again.
I'll go into more detail soon.

So we're just waiting on IanTheCool , PhantomKnight and Deexan so we can finally discuss this movie openly. I saw it on Thursday, actually. Nearly didn't though. What a bloody nightmare! I bought my ticket back in October online. The confirmation email got deleted between then and Thursday. Ordinarily, I just swipe my credit card at the kiosk and that's enough to get my tickets. Unfortunately, since October my bank issued me a new card in order to have one with a security chip in it. To make matters worse, it turns out that if you buy your tickets online, when you show up to the kiosk, EVERY ticket you've purchased online prints out. I bought tickets to Spectre on the same site, and apparently my Star Wars tickets printed out at that time and was left behind, since I didn't know it was even there! So there I am at the theater on Thursday at 6:30pm and it's beginning to look like we're totally screwed. The poor girl behind the glass doesn't know what to do. The manager (who looks only about a year older than the girl) doesn't know what to do. I'm told that I either have to provide a confirmation number or the credit card number I used to buy the tickets with (which I cut into tiny pieces two weeks ago). After scouring my online purchase history for my old card number and turning up nothing, I finally go to the theater site. Turns out (to the surprise of everyone who works at the theater) that since I'm a registered user on the theater's website, there was a listing of every confirmation number I've ever had available on my profile page. It would have been nice if someone who worked there could have told me that to begin with! Thank The Maker for smart phones.
